Chapter 4

Ryan Cole disappeared before the detective reached the elevator.
By morning, every door in my life had a lock on it.
Police outside Claire’s room.
A social worker beside Lily.
A lawyer from my company calling nonstop.
My phone had sixty-three missed calls.
Most were from Vanessa’s mother, Patricia.
One voicemail played before I could stop it.
“Daniel, do not believe that woman. Vanessa sacrificed everything for you. You owe her loyalty.”
Claire flinched at Patricia’s voice.
I ended the message.
“You know her?”
Claire stared at the blanket.
“She visited the room sometimes.”
“What room?”
“The room before your house.”
I sat down slowly.
Vanessa had only moved into my mansion six months ago.
Before that, Claire had been kept somewhere else.
“Where?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“A farmhouse. Maybe east. I heard trains at night. Patricia called it the holding property.”
Detective Grant wrote everything down.
Lily sat beside Claire and touched her fingers like she was afraid her mother would vanish.
“Did you hear me when I sang?” Lily asked.
Claire broke.
“Yes.”
My heart stopped.
Lily looked at me.
“I sang through the wall.”
I remembered those nights.
Lily standing near the storage room humming the lullaby Claire used to sing.
Vanessa telling me it was unhealthy.
Vanessa telling me to be firm.
Vanessa telling Lily, “Your mother is gone. Stop pretending.”
I stepped into the hallway because I could not let Lily see me fall apart.
Michael arrived an hour later.
My older brother stormed down the hospital corridor still wearing his work boots.
He grabbed me and hugged me so hard my ribs hurt.
“What the hell happened?”
“I don’t know all of it.”
He looked through the glass at Claire.
“She’s alive.”
“I know.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Arrested.”
His face darkened.
“Not enough.”
Michael had never trusted Vanessa.
He once told me she smiled too carefully.
I had told him grief made me sensitive.
Now I could not look him in the eye.
A nurse approached.
“Mr. Whitmore, there’s a woman at reception claiming to be Lily’s grandmother.”
My body went cold.
Claire whispered from inside the room, “Patricia.”
Michael cracked his knuckles.
“Stay with Lily.”
I followed anyway.
Patricia stood in the lobby in a cream coat, crying into a tissue for an audience.
“My son-in-law is confused,” she told the security guard. “He has been manipulated by a disturbed woman.”
I stepped forward.
“Leave.”
She turned, relief blooming across her face like she had practiced it.
“Daniel, thank God. Vanessa is terrified.”
“She should be.”
Patricia lowered her voice.
“You do not understand what Claire did before the accident.”
“Then tell the police.”
Her eyes hardened.
“You always were weak when women cried.”
Michael stepped beside me.
“And you always talk too much when cameras are recording.”
Patricia glanced up.
Hospital security cameras stared down at her.
Detective Grant appeared behind us.
“Patricia Vale?”
Patricia’s smile vanished.
Vale.
Not Cole.
Not Whitmore.
Vale.
Claire had whispered that name in her sleep.
Patricia tried to step back.
Detective Grant held up a warrant.
“We need to speak about the farmhouse.”
Patricia looked at me one last time.
May you like
Then she said the sentence that made everyone stop.
“Claire signed the agreement. Ask Daniel what he did to make her want to disappear.”
