Surprise

Chapter 5

I stared at the anonymous message until the words blurred.

ASK ABOUT THE BABY'S TRUST FUND.

Hope was only five days old.

She couldn't even hold her head up.

And someone was sending me warnings about money connected to her.

I felt sick.

The next morning, Olivia reviewed the messages.

She asked me not to reply.

Instead, we preserved them and contacted Detective Simone Carter, who had been assigned to the financial investigation.

The detective was a calm Black woman in her forties.

She listened carefully.

Then asked,

"Marcus, did Claire discuss creating a trust before Hope was born?"

I thought back.

Three months earlier, Claire insisted we meet with a financial planner.

She said she wanted to protect our children's future.

I agreed.

Then my work schedule became overwhelming.

Claire said she would handle the preliminary paperwork.

I remembered signing a few general information forms.

But I never received final documents.

I looked at the detective.

"She mentioned it."

Simone nodded.

"Do you know who prepared the documents?"

I shook my head.

"No."

Olivia opened her laptop.

"We're trying to identify the financial firm."

I took a breath.

"Okay."

Later that afternoon, the firm responded.

The records showed that a proposed family trust had been prepared.

It included Hope as a beneficiary.

But it also named Julian Brooks as a financial adviser.

My stomach tightened.

"Julian?"

Olivia nodded.

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

The man who had been sleeping with my wife.

The man receiving questionable payments from my company.

The man who claimed Hope was his biological daughter.

Now his name appeared in paperwork involving her financial future.

I felt cold.

Olivia continued.

"The trust was not fully established."

I exhaled.

"Thank God."

Then she added,

"However, several supporting documents were signed."

My stomach tightened.

"By whom?"

She looked at me.

"Claire."

I nodded slowly.

Then she turned another page.

"And one appears to bear your signature."

My hands began trembling.

"I didn't sign anything like that."

Olivia nodded.

"We'll investigate."

The pattern was becoming terrifying.

Julian and Claire weren't simply hiding an affair.

They were creating documents.

Moving money.

Using my name.

And trying to involve our children.

I looked at the detective.

"What were they planning?"

She answered carefully.

"We're still establishing that."

I nodded.

I wanted certainty.

But I understood.

I needed evidence.

Not fear.

That evening, Claire asked to speak with me.

She had been staying in the guest room while we worked through immediate arrangements.

Hope remained safely cared for, and my mother was helping us keep things calm for Maya.

Claire looked exhausted.

Her braided updo had come loose.

Her eyes were swollen.

She stood beside the kitchen island.

"Marcus, please."

I looked at her.

"What?"

"I know I've hurt you."

I nodded.

"You have."

She began crying.

"But Julian isn't who you think he is."

I stared.

"I think he's the man you've been having an affair with."

She covered her face.

I continued.

"And the man who received money from my company."

She nodded.

Then whispered,

"He threatened me."

My stomach tightened.

"How?"

Claire took a breath.

"He said he'd tell you about the baby."

I stared.

"And?"

"He said he'd make sure you lost everything."

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to understand whether Julian had been coercing her.

But that didn't erase her choices.

I looked at her.

"Claire, did you willingly transfer money?"

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

I swallowed.

"Did you forge my signature?"

She began crying.

"Yes."

I took a breath.

"And did you know Julian was trying to use Hope's trust documents?"

She looked down.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then whispered,

"Yes."

My heart sank.

I stared at her.

"Why?"

She began sobbing.

"Because he said we needed financial security."

I shook my head.

"We had financial security."

She looked away.

I continued.

"We had a home."

My voice broke.

"A business."

I swallowed.

"Two beautiful girls."

Claire covered her face.

Then she whispered,

"Julian said he'd leave me if I didn't help."

I stared.

For a moment, I felt pity.

Then I remembered Maya.

The little girl who had been forced to hide secrets.

The newborn who had been used in financial paperwork before she could even open her eyes.

I took a breath.

"Claire, you need to tell the investigators everything."

She nodded.

"I will."

I looked at her.

"And you need independent legal advice."

She began crying.

"Marcus, are you going to divorce me?"

I closed my eyes.

For eleven years, she had been my wife.

My partner.

My best friend.

I had built my adult life around her.

But now I barely recognized the person standing in front of me.

I swallowed.

"I don't know what happens to our marriage yet."

Her face crumpled.

I continued.

"But I know I can't keep living with lies."

She nodded slowly.

That night, I sat beside Hope's bassinet.

The room was quiet.

Maya slept in her bedroom.

My mother had gone downstairs.

Claire was resting.

I looked at the newborn.

Her tiny face was peaceful.

She made a soft sound.

Then settled again.

I felt tears rise.

For five days, I had loved this baby believing she was mine.

Now I knew the truth.

But I also knew something else.

Biology didn't make her responsible for betrayal.

I gently touched the edge of her blanket.

"Hey, little Hope."

Her tiny fingers moved.

I smiled through tears.

"You have no idea what's happening around you."

I took a breath.

"But you're safe."

Then my phone rang.

Jasmine.

I answered quietly.

"Hey."

Her voice sounded urgent.

"Marcus, we found something."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Julian has been contacting your business clients."

I sat straighter.

"Why?"

"He says Bennett Construction is having financial problems."

I felt sick.

"What?"

Jasmine continued.

"He's offering to take over several contracts."

My heart pounded.

"Which contracts?"

"Three of your largest projects."

I closed my eyes.

Julian wasn't simply stealing money.

He was trying to destroy my business from the outside.

Jasmine continued.

"And Marcus, there's something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"He submitted a proposal to purchase your company's assets."

I froze.

"What?"

She took a breath.

"The proposal assumes Bennett Construction will default on the disputed loan."

My hands began shaking.

I stared toward Hope's bassinet.

Then whispered,

"He planned this."

Jasmine was quiet.

I continued.

"He wanted the company to collapse."

My sister answered carefully.

"That's what the evidence suggests."

I closed my eyes.

For years, Julian had called me his brother.

He had celebrated every new contract.

He had stood beside me when I opened my first office.

And now he was apparently planning to buy everything I built after helping create the financial crisis.

Then Jasmine added one final detail.

"Marcus, the purchase proposal lists Claire as a future owner."

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Because suddenly, I realized my wife hadn't only been preparing to leave our marriage.

She had been preparing to inherit the life I built with someone else.
