Surprise

Chapter 3

I felt my knees weaken.

"Unfit mother?"

Maya nodded.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

I looked toward Marcus.

He shook his head immediately.

"Nia, that wasn't my idea."

I stared at him.

"But you knew?"

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

My heart broke.

For eleven years, I'd trusted this man with my daughters.

Now he was standing in our driveway admitting he knew someone wanted to attack my ability to care for them.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I took a breath.

"Maya, where's Lily?"

"Inside."

"Is she okay?"

"She's drawing."

I nodded.

"Good."

Then I turned toward Marcus.

"You need to stay away from the girls until we've spoken with legal counsel."

His face changed.

"Nia, Lily is my daughter."

"I know."

My voice shook.

"And that's why what you're doing is so frightening."

He reached toward me.

I stepped away.

"Don't."

He froze.

Then Renee approached from the front gate.

She wore a cream blouse and dark trousers.

Her expression was serious.

"Nia?"

I turned.

For one second, I tried to be strong.

Then I broke.

"Renee..."

She rushed toward me.

I fell into her arms.

She held me tightly.

"What happened?"

I could barely speak.

"The house."

My voice cracked.

"Marcus signed something."

She looked toward him.

He lowered his head.

Renee gently guided me toward the patio.

"Tell me everything."

I explained the robot.

The memory card.

The recording.

The private loan.

The mention of Danielle.

And the threat involving my children.

Renee listened without interrupting.

Then she asked:

"Do you have the original recordings?"

Maya nodded.

"The memory card is intact."

Renee looked at her.

"Good. Don't change or delete anything."

Maya nodded.

"Okay."

Then Renee turned toward Marcus.

"Do you have copies of the loan documents?"

He hesitated.

"Some."

"Where?"

"In my suitcase."

I stared at him.

Of course.

The suitcase he'd been dragging toward the street.

He hadn't simply packed clothes.

He'd packed evidence.

Renee looked at me.

"Nia, I want you to call a property attorney and an independent family lawyer."

I nodded.

"And Marcus needs his own counsel."

She turned toward him.

"Don't hand anything over to me without understanding your rights. Preserve the documents."

He looked stunned.

I appreciated her restraint.

Renee wasn't going to let my anger turn the situation into something legally careless.

She wanted facts.

And I needed them more than revenge.

Marcus opened his suitcase.

Inside were clothes.

A folder.

A tablet.

And several envelopes.

He placed the folder on the patio table.

Renee asked him to leave it there while we arranged appropriate review.

I glanced at the top page.

A loan agreement.

The amount was two hundred thousand dollars.

The borrower was Marcus's company.

The listed security included our home.

My stomach twisted.

Then I saw a second page.

A consent form.

My name appeared beneath a signature.

NIA CARTER BENNETT.

I stared at it.

"That's not my signature."

Marcus closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

"Did you forge my name?"

He began crying.

"I didn't sign it."

My chest tightened.

"Then who did?"

He whispered:

"Danielle prepared the paperwork."

I stared at him.

"And you submitted it?"

He nodded.

I felt sick.

"Did you know the signature wasn't mine?"

His silence answered.

I stepped backward.

Renee touched my arm.

"Nia, breathe."

I looked at her.

Tears filled my eyes.

"He knew."

She nodded sadly.

"I heard."

I covered my mouth.

For years, I'd worked to build stability.

After Maya's father died, I nearly lost everything.

I worked overtime.

Sold my old car.

Moved into a smaller apartment.

Then slowly saved enough for a down payment.

This house wasn't simply property.

It was proof I'd survived.

It was where Maya learned to ride her bike.

Where Lily took her first steps.

Where I'd promised both girls they'd always have somewhere safe to come home.

And Marcus had used it to secure a debt without asking me.

I began crying.

Renee held me.

Then Maya stepped closer.

"Mom, there's something else."

I looked up.

She held the laptop.

"The second video."

My stomach tightened.

Renee looked toward the screen.

"Let's watch it privately."

We went into the kitchen.

Marcus remained outside with his suitcase while Renee arranged for an attorney to contact him.

Lily was upstairs.

Maya opened the file.

The recording showed our garage two weeks earlier.

Danielle stood beside Marcus.

She wore a white blazer.

Her phone was in her hand.

Marcus looked nervous.

Danielle said:

"Nia is going to question the transfer."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Then we don't tell her."

Danielle laughed.

"That woman checks everything."

I felt cold.

Marcus looked toward the house.

"She's busy with the girls."

Danielle stepped closer.

"And if she discovers it, we'll say she's been acting irrationally."

My stomach dropped.

The recording continued.

Danielle said:

"People believe a worried husband, especially when there are children involved."

Marcus shook his head.

"Don't bring the girls into this."

For one brief moment, I felt relief.

Then Danielle replied:

"You already did when you put their house at risk."

Marcus went silent.

She continued.

"If Nia challenges the loan, we'll make sure nobody trusts her judgment."

I felt sick.

Maya covered her mouth.

"Mom..."

I paused the video.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Renee looked at me.

"This is serious."

I nodded.

My voice barely worked.

"She wanted to use my children against me."

Renee squeezed my hand.

"But remember, a recording of someone making a threat doesn't mean they can simply take custody."

I nodded.

I needed to hear that.

She continued.

"We'll document everything and seek appropriate protections."

I looked toward the ceiling.

Lily was upstairs in her room.

Probably drawing a new robot.

She had no idea how close she had come to being used as a weapon in an adult financial dispute.

I felt anger rise.

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

A woman spoke.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"Yes?"

"My name is Angela Brooks. I'm calling from the lending company's compliance department."

My stomach tightened.

She continued.

"We've been trying to verify your consent regarding a property-secured loan."

I stared at Renee.

"What?"

The woman paused.

"Mrs. Bennett, did you personally sign an authorization involving your residence?"

My voice shook.

"No."

Silence.

Then she said:

"Thank you. We need to discuss a possible unauthorized transaction."

I sat down slowly.

For the first time, I realized the lender might have discovered something Marcus and Danielle hadn't expected.

May you like

The forged paperwork hadn't gone unnoticed.

And that meant there might still be time to save our home.
