Surprise

Chapter 1

My mother-in-law threw my suitcase across the driveway before I could even ask why another woman was sleeping in my bedroom.

“Get out, Nia!”

The wheels scraped against the pavement.

I stood outside the enormous white mansion, still wearing the blazer dress I had chosen for what I thought would be a romantic anniversary dinner.

Evelyn stood in the doorway.

Her burgundy velvet dress looked expensive. Her pearl earrings caught the afternoon sunlight.

And her smile was cruel.

“This is our family's property,” she announced. “You don't belong here anymore.”

I stared at her.

“Where is Marcus?”

She laughed.

“Still asking for your husband? That man has moved on.”

My stomach twisted.

“What are you talking about?”

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Marcus is with another woman. She's pregnant with his baby.”

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

I looked past her into the marble entrance.

The flower arrangement I had ordered was still on the table.

Our wedding photograph still hung beside the staircase.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Except my marriage had apparently ended without anyone telling me.

“That's a lie,” I whispered.

Evelyn smiled.

“Then ask him yourself.”

The front door opened.

Marcus walked outside.

My husband.

The man I had loved for eight years.

He wore a navy shirt and tailored trousers.

His expression was cold.

Beside him stood a woman in a fitted cream maternity dress.

Her stomach was unmistakably rounded.

I recognized her immediately.

Vanessa Reed.

The woman Marcus introduced to me six months earlier as a business consultant.

The woman who smiled across my dinner table.

The woman who once hugged me and told me I was lucky to have such a devoted husband.

Now she stood beside him carrying his child.

I felt the ground shift beneath my feet.

“Marcus?”

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at her stomach.

“How far along are you?”

She lowered her head.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Nia, don't start.”

I stared at him.

“Don't start?”

He sighed impatiently.

“Please don't make a scene.”

I almost laughed.

My husband had brought his pregnant mistress into our home.

His mother had thrown my belongings onto the driveway.

And he was worried about a scene.

“How long?” I asked.

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

“Nia.”

“How long have you been sleeping with her?”

Vanessa flinched.

Evelyn folded her arms.

“She's having his baby. That's all you need to know.”

I turned toward her.

“Stay out of this.”

Her smile disappeared.

“How dare you speak to me like that?”

I looked back at Marcus.

“Answer me.”

He exhaled.

“Almost a year.”

The words struck harder than any slap.

A year.

For almost twelve months, I had slept beside a man who was building another life behind my back.

I remembered the business trips.

The late meetings.

The phone calls he took outside.

The perfume I once smelled on his jacket.

Every explanation I accepted suddenly became another lie.

“Was she pregnant when we went to Barbados?”

Marcus looked away.

That was answer enough.

Our anniversary trip had been three months earlier.

He had held my hand on the beach.

He had promised we would start trying for a baby again.

And all the while, Vanessa was already carrying his child.

I swallowed the scream rising in my throat.

“Why?”

Marcus finally looked at me.

“Things changed.”

I stared at him.

“Things changed?”

He reached into his pocket.

Then he removed a thick envelope.

“There's no point dragging this out.”

He pushed it into my hand.

“Sign these and make this easy.”

I opened the envelope.

Divorce papers.

Prepared documents.

A proposed settlement.

A complete plan for ending our marriage.

I stared at the pages.

My name appeared beside his.

Nia Carter.

Marcus Carter.

Eight years reduced to signatures.

One tear fell onto the paper.

I wiped it away.

Then I noticed something strange.

The proposed settlement described the mansion as Marcus's separate property.

It also claimed I had no ownership interest in the family businesses.

And it offered me a one-time payment of fifty thousand dollars.

I nearly smiled.

Not because the amount was generous.

Because it told me exactly what Marcus believed.

He thought I was still the young woman he married.

The woman who arrived with two suitcases and a teaching salary.

The woman his mother called a charity case.

He had forgotten what happened after our wedding.

He had forgotten who rebuilt his failing company.

And most importantly, he had forgotten whose money kept this mansion standing when his creditors came knocking.

I closed the envelope.

Then I looked directly at him.

“Are you sure this is what you want?”

Marcus didn't hesitate.

“Completely.”

Evelyn smiled with satisfaction.

Vanessa looked relieved.

I studied their faces.

Not one of them seemed to understand what they had just done.

I nodded.

“Okay.”

Marcus frowned.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

He looked confused.

“That's it?”

I picked up my suitcase.

“What else would you like me to say?”

Evelyn scoffed.

“Finally, some dignity.”

I ignored her.

A black luxury sedan waited near the driveway gate.

Its driver stepped out when he saw me.

Marcus glanced toward the car.

“Whose vehicle is that?”

I didn't answer.

I handed my suitcase to the driver.

He placed it in the trunk.

Then he opened the rear passenger door.

Marcus took a step closer.

“Nia.”

I stopped.

“You're not going to argue?”

I looked back at him.

“Would it change anything?”

He hesitated.

“No.”

“Then there's nothing to discuss.”

I entered the car.

The driver closed the door.

Through the tinted window, I watched Marcus standing beside his pregnant mistress.

Evelyn rested a possessive hand on his shoulder.

The three of them looked like a family celebrating a victory.

I took out my phone.

Then I called the one person Marcus had spent years trying to keep away from our marriage.

The call connected immediately.

“Nia?”

I looked toward the mansion.

“It's happening.”

The voice became serious.

“Are you certain?”

I glanced at the divorce papers resting on my lap.

“He gave me the documents himself.”

A pause.

“Do you want us to proceed?”

I took a slow breath.

Then I looked at the house where I had spent eight years trying to earn love from people who never intended to give it.

“Start everything.”

The voice asked one final question.

“Should we notify Marcus before taking action?”

I watched my husband stare uneasily toward the car.

“No.”

My voice was steady.

“Don't warn them.”

I ended the call.

Then I looked at the driver.

“Take me to the office.”

He nodded.

“Yes, Mrs. Carter.”

As we passed through the gates, I opened the envelope again.

Marcus had given me divorce papers.

May you like

But he had no idea that the documents proving his betrayal were already waiting on someone else's desk.

And by the time he discovered what I had done, the mansion he had thrown me out of would be the least of his problems.
