Surprise

Chapter 8: The Secret Hidden in the Walls

The moment Diane said Lily’s name, every muscle in my body went rigid.

I looked at Ryan.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Because there was only one question that mattered.

How did she know?

Lily was not supposed to be here.

She was supposed to be home.

Safe.

Away from everything that had followed us into this nightmare.

But Diane knew.

And that meant one thing.

Someone had been watching us.

Again.

Ryan moved toward the door.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“That’s my mother.””

“Exactly.””

His expression changed.

He understood.

The woman outside was not the same woman who had smiled at birthday parties.

Not the same woman who had brought Lily presents.

Not the same woman who had called herself family.

This was the woman who had spent years controlling everyone around her.

The woman who had buried the truth.

The woman who had almost convinced Ryan he was a murderer.

Emma stood near the window, trembling.

“Ryan.””

He looked at his sister.

“What?””

“You can’t open that door.””

“Why?””

“Because she’s not alone.””

The hallway outside went silent.

Then Diane spoke again.

“Ryan.””

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

That was worse.

“I know you’re in there.””

Ryan stepped closer.

“How?””

No answer.

Then Diane laughed softly.

“You always ask the wrong questions.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“What’s the right question?””

A pause.

Then:

“Who told me?””

Everyone froze.

Emma closed her eyes.

Ryan looked at her.

“You know.””

Emma whispered:

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“You said she wasn’t alone.””

“She isn’t.””

“Who is with her?””

Emma didn’t answer.

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Diane was trying to open it.

Detective Hale stepped forward.

“Everyone away from the door.””

Nobody argued.

A few seconds later, the handle stopped moving.

Then Diane spoke.

“I don’t want to hurt anyone.””

Frank almost laughed.

“You’ve said that before.””

Her voice changed.

“Frank.””

A cold silence followed.

Then:

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

Frank looked at the door.

“No.””

His voice was steady.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

The silence stretched.

Then Diane said:

“Ryan.””

He looked at the door.

“Your father is lying to you.””

Ryan didn’t respond.

“He always has.””

Still nothing.

“He abandoned you.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“He left you alone with me.””

Frank looked away.

Diane continued.

“You spent years believing I was the monster.””

She paused.

“But you don’t know what he did.””

Ryan looked at Frank.

The doubt was immediate.

Small.

But there.

And Diane saw it.

Because she always saw weakness.

“Ask him.””

Ryan whispered:

“What?””

“Ask your father what happened the night Emma disappeared.””

Emma stepped back.

Her face went pale.

Ryan turned toward her.

“Emma?””

She looked down.

“Don’t.””

“What happened?””

She didn’t answer.

Frank did.

“She was taken.””

Ryan looked at him.

“By who?””

Frank’s silence was enough.

Ryan’s eyes moved toward the door.

“Mom?””

Diane didn’t answer.

That was the first time she had no words.

Detective Hale looked at Emma.

“You need to explain.””

Emma nodded slowly.

“I was eighteen.””

She swallowed.

“I found the files.””

“What files?””

“The ones Dad had.””

Frank looked down.

“The accounts.””

Emma nodded.

“Mom wasn’t just moving money.””

Ryan frowned.

“What else?””

Emma looked at him.

“She was paying people.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Why?””

Emma’s eyes filled.

“To make problems disappear.””

Nobody spoke.

The apartment felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

I looked at Emma.

“How did you survive?””

She looked toward the window.

“Someone helped me.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Uncle Daniel.””

Ryan frowned.

“We don’t have an Uncle Daniel.””

Emma looked at him sadly.

“Yes, we do.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

“Dad’s brother.””

Frank’s expression changed.

“Daniel died before you were born.””

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He didn’t.””

Frank stepped back.

“What?””

Emma looked at him.

“Mom told everyone he died.””

A horrible realization crossed Frank’s face.

“No.””

Emma nodded.

“She has been doing this for a long time.””

Ryan looked confused.

“Doing what?””

Emma’s voice became quiet.

“Erasing people.””

The sentence stayed in the air.

Erasing people.

Not killing.

Not hurting.

Erasing.

Changing stories.

Changing records.

Making people disappear.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

But this time it wasn’t from an unknown number.

It was from Diane.

*You should have listened to me, Emily.*

A second message arrived.

*You have no idea what your husband is capable of.*

Ryan saw it.

His expression changed.

Then another message.

*Ask him why he really married you.*

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Ryan.

“What is she talking about?””

He stared at the phone.

“I don’t know.””

I hated hearing those words.

I hated how often they appeared.

Emma looked at him.

“Ryan.””

“What?””

She looked uncertain.

“Did Mom ever talk about Emily before you met?””

He looked confused.

“No.””

Emma hesitated.

“She knew about her.””

“What?””

Frank looked at his son.

“Ryan?””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t know.””

I stepped away from him.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily.””

“Answer me.””

“I don’t know.””

I laughed.

But there was no humor.

“Of course.””

The apartment suddenly felt colder.

For the first time, I wondered if Diane was right about one thing.

Not about Frank.

Not about Emma.

About Ryan.

How much of my life had I actually known?

I looked at my husband.

“When did your mother know about me?””

He didn’t answer.

“Ryan.””

“I don’t know.””

Emma whispered:

“Before you met.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked guilty.

“I’m sorry.””

Ryan stared at his sister.

“What are you talking about?””

Emma took a breath.

“Mom kept files.””

“Files?””

“On everyone.””

Frank closed his eyes.

“She always collected information.””

Emma nodded.

“She knew where people worked.””

“Why?””

“Control.””

She looked at me.

“She knew about Emily before you introduced her.””

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Emma looked down.

“Because she wanted to know if you were useful.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Ryan stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Emma looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

“I love her.””

“I know.””

“Then don’t do this.””

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

“Then stop making everything worse.””

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Ryan.””

He looked away.

“I spent three years thinking everyone left me.””

His voice cracked.

“Please don’t tell me the person I built my life with was chosen for me.””

I felt something break inside.

Because he wasn’t asking Emma.

He was asking me.

And I didn’t know the answer.

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The apartment window shattered.

Glass exploded across the floor.

I screamed.

Detective Hale pulled me down.

“Get away from the windows!””

Ryan grabbed Lily’s photo from the table.

Emma moved toward the back room.

Frank looked outside.

“Everyone okay?””

Nobody answered.

Because on the opposite building, through the rain-covered glass, someone was standing.

Watching.

A man.

Holding a camera.

Detective Hale moved toward the window.

“Stay here.””

He ran toward the hallway.

The man disappeared.

Seconds later, Detective Hale returned.

“No one.””

Ryan looked angry.

“How?””

“He was gone before I reached the stairs.””

Emma looked terrified.

“He wanted us to see him.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She looked at the broken window.

“That wasn’t an attack.””

Frank frowned.

“Then what was it?””

“A warning.””

My phone buzzed again.

This time there was an attachment.

A video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed a room.

Dark.

Small.

A basement.

Then a voice.

Diane.

“You always wanted answers.””

The camera moved.

A light turned on.

And my heart stopped.

Because the room was filled with photographs.

Hundreds.

Of people.

Documents.

Records.

And in the center was a wall covered with pictures of Ryan.

From childhood.

From school.

From our wedding.

From the day Lily was born.

Then the camera moved.

And I saw something that made me unable to breathe.

A file folder.

With my name.

*EMILY CARTER.*

Ryan grabbed the phone.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

The video continued.

Diane’s voice whispered:

“I told you.””

The camera moved closer to the file.

“Your wife was never a coincidence.””

Ryan looked at me.

His face was full of fear.

Then Diane said:

“She was chosen.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Frank whispered:

“Where did she get that?””

Emma looked at him.

“You know.””

“No.””

“You do.””

Frank shook his head.

“No.””

Emma stepped closer.

“Dad.””

Her voice broke.

“Mom didn’t just keep files on strangers.””

She looked at Ryan.

“She kept files on us.””

Ryan stared.

“Why?””

Emma whispered:

“Because she knew one day we would need to be controlled.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

The apartment door slowly opened.

Nobody had touched it.

Nobody moved.

Then a figure stepped inside.

Not Diane.

Someone else.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

Carrying a folder.

Frank stared.

His face drained of color.

“No.””

The man looked at him.

“Hello, brother.””

Ryan whispered:

“Uncle Daniel?””

The man smiled.

“Yes.””

He looked around the room.

Then at me.

“Emily Carter.””

My blood went cold.

“How do you know me?””

He smiled sadly.

“Because I’m the reason you’re here.””

Nobody moved.

Ryan stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at him.

“It means your mother didn’t choose Emily.””

He lifted the folder.

“I did.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said the words that changed everything.

“Because she is the only person who can prove what happened the night your father died.””

I stared at him.

“What proof?””

Daniel looked toward Frank.

“The proof that Frank Whitmore wasn’t the victim.””

Frank’s face changed.

Ryan turned.

“What?””

Daniel opened the folder.

And pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of Frank.

Standing over someone.

Holding a knife.

The timestamp read:

*Three years ago.*

Daniel placed it on the table.

Then whispered:

“The truth is much uglier than you think.””

May you like

And behind him, standing in the doorway, was Diane.

Smiling.
