Surprise

Chapter 4

Daniel did not raise his voice.

That made Mark angrier.

“Your sister assaulted my mother,” Mark said.

Daniel held up one finger.

“Your mother assaulted a child.”

“She defended herself.”

Daniel turned the tablet around and played the video.

Again.

The slap.

Lily falling.

Diane lunging.

Mark doing nothing.

Rachel looked away.

Dr. Sloan went pale.

Daniel paused on Lily’s red cheek.

“Would you like to continue?”

Mark clenched his jaw.

“You don’t know what Emma is like behind closed doors.”

Daniel smiled without warmth.

“That sounds like defamation warming up.”

Rachel scoffed.

“You can’t threaten us.”

“No,” Daniel said. “But the truth can.”

He looked at Dr. Sloan.

“Are you still comfortable standing here after writing a mental health opinion about my sister without a clinical evaluation?”

Dr. Sloan whispered, “I was told there was urgency.”

“By whom?”

She looked at Mark.

Mark’s face hardened.

“This is family business.”

Daniel stepped closer to the door.

“You tried to manufacture evidence to take a child from her mother.”

Rachel snapped, “Lily belongs with her father too.”

I looked at her.

“Then why did her father let Diane hit her?”

Rachel had no answer.

Daniel told them to leave before we called the police again.

Mark stared at me through the glass.

“You will regret this.”

My brother’s voice dropped.

“Say one more threatening sentence on camera.”

Mark looked up at the blinking lens.

He stepped back.

But before he left, he said something that froze me.

“You don’t even know what house you’re standing in.”

Then he walked away.

I turned to Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel opened his laptop at my kitchen table.

“Show me everything.”

I brought him the deed, mortgage papers, bank statements, insurance documents, tax returns, Lily’s birth certificate, and the folder my father left me before he died.

My father had helped me buy the house.

He had given me the down payment from the sale of his old garage in Worcester.

He made me promise the house would stay in my name because he never liked Mark.

At the time, I thought Dad was being harsh.

Now I wanted to crawl into the past and thank him.

Daniel read silently for almost an hour.

Then he stopped on one page.

“What is Whitaker Family Holdings?”

I frowned.

“Mark’s consulting company.”

“Why is there a lien from them attached to your address?”

My throat went dry.

“What?”

Daniel turned the screen.

A filing had been recorded six months earlier.

A business lien.

Against my home.

Authorized by my signature.

But I had never signed it.

My name was there in black ink.

Emma Claire Whitaker.

Only one thing was wrong.

I never used Claire on legal documents.

I used my maiden name as my middle name.

Emma Hayes Whitaker.

Daniel saw my face.

“That’s forged.”

My knees weakened.

“He put debt on my house?”

“Looks like he tried.”

Lily wandered in holding her stuffed bunny.

“Mommy, can I have breakfast?”

I closed the laptop so she could not see.

“Yes, baby.”

I made pancakes while my whole life cracked open behind me.

Daniel kept digging.

Every few minutes, his expression changed.

A second lien.

A private loan.

A home equity application I never approved.

A notarized spousal consent form.

The notary was Rachel.

My hands started shaking so hard syrup spilled onto the counter.

Daniel said, “Emma.”

I turned.

He held up one printed page.

“This wasn’t just about custody.”

“What was it about?”

He looked toward the house around us.

“If Mark could prove you unstable, he could challenge your control of the property, keep Lily, and pressure you to sign everything over during the divorce.”

I gripped the counter.

“And Diane?”

Daniel’s eyes darkened.

“She was the spark. They needed you to hit first.”

I looked toward Lily, who was cutting pancakes into tiny squares.

But Diane had hit my child first.

And now I understood the real horror.

May you like

They had not lost control at dinner.

They had rehearsed it.
