Chapter 3: The Woman in the Photograph

I stared at the photograph until the woman's face blurred.

She was standing beside Daniel outside a bank.

Not a restaurant.

Not an office.

A bank.

She looked to be in her early thirties, with dark hair pulled over one shoulder and a camel-colored coat buttoned to her throat. She was smiling at the camera.

Daniel wasn't.

His expression was tense.

Careful.

The way he looked whenever he knew he was doing something he didn't want anyone to discover.

I turned the photograph over again.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Daniel's handwriting.

*Before Emily finds out.*

My fingers went cold.

I looked at him.

“Who is she?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

“Who is she?””

“I can explain.””

I almost laughed.

“That's what people say when there is something to explain.””

Margaret moved toward me.

“Emily, you're upset.””

I looked at her.

“My husband is standing outside a bank with another woman, and there is a photograph of them that literally says I wasn't supposed to find out.””

“It isn't what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

That hurt more than anything.

Not the picture.

Not the hidden debt.

Not even the slap.

His inability to look at me told me there was something worse behind that photograph.

Robert remained completely still.

“Daniel,” he said quietly.

Daniel swallowed.

“Her name is Vanessa.””

I waited.

“And?””

“She worked with me.””

“Worked?””

“She doesn't anymore.””

“What did she do?””

He rubbed his palms together.

“She handled some of the financial side of the restaurant.””

I stared at him.

“You told me you did all the finances.””

“I said I handled most of them.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You told me you handled all of them.””

He sighed.

“Emily, I was trying to keep things organized.””

“You were trying to keep me out of them.””

He didn't answer.

I looked at Robert.

“Who is Vanessa?””

Robert's jaw tightened.

“She was an accountant.””

I looked back at Daniel.

“Your accountant?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you take a photograph with her?””

He hesitated.

“Because she helped me with the loan.””

“What loan?””

Daniel looked down.

“The business line of credit.””

I felt something inside me drop.

“Which business line of credit?””

Daniel remained silent.

Robert answered.

“The one secured against the house.””

My heart stopped.

I turned toward Robert.

“I'm sorry?””

Robert's eyes darkened.

“The house was used as collateral.””

I looked at the deed in my hand.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at Robert.

“How?””

Robert took a breath.

“Because Daniel borrowed against the property after the title was changed.””

I couldn't process the words.

“You said he had no ownership.””

“He didn't.””

“Then how could he borrow against my house?””

“He couldn't lawfully do it without authorization.””

My stomach twisted.

“Did he?””

Robert didn't answer.

That was enough.

I turned slowly toward Daniel.

“Did you sign something with my name?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“Daniel.””

“I didn't forge anything.””

I looked at him.

“I didn't ask whether you forged anything.””

He froze.

“Did you use my name?””

Daniel's face went pale.

“I used the documents that were already on file.””

My mouth went dry.

“What does that mean?””

“The lender had copies of the deed.””

“And?””

“And your name was there.””

“That isn't an answer.””

He looked toward his father.

“Dad, you don't understand.””

Robert's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Then explain it.””

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

“I only used the property information as part of the application.””

“As collateral?”” I asked.

He didn't answer.

“As collateral?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“You used my house to secure a loan without telling me?””

“I intended to pay it back.””

“That isn't the point.””

“It was temporary.””

“Everything with you is temporary.””

My voice cracked.

“The lies. The debt. The gambling.

The loans. The woman outside the bank. Everything is temporary until I find out.””

Daniel flinched.

I looked at the photograph again.

“Why did she write this?””

He shook his head.

“She didn't.””

“What?””

“I wrote it.””

My skin prickled.

“You wrote the words on the back?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel stared at the table.

“Because I knew I couldn't let you see the photograph.””

“Why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because Vanessa wasn't just my accountant.””

Silence.

I felt my heartbeat in my throat.

“What was she?””

Daniel looked up at me.

“She was an investor.””

“That's all?””

He didn't answer.

“Daniel.””

“She put money into the restaurant.””

“How much?””

“Twenty-five thousand.””

My eyes narrowed.

“And what did she get in return?””

He hesitated.

“Equity.””

Robert gave a bitter laugh.

“No.””

Daniel's head snapped toward him.

“You promised her equity.””

Robert's voice was cold.

“You promised her ownership.””

I felt dizzy.

“Ownership of what?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Of the restaurant?””

Still nothing.

Robert answered.

“Of more than the restaurant.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Robert reached for another document.

He didn't even need to speak.

I saw Daniel's expression and knew.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Robert unfolded the paper.

“This is the partnership agreement.””

I took it.

The first page contained several names.

I scanned the lines.

Daniel Carter.

Vanessa Reed.

And then—

*Emily Carter.*

I stared.

“No.””

I looked at the signature block.

My name appeared beneath Vanessa's.

I could barely breathe.

“I never signed this.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I can explain.””

“Did you forge this?””

“No.””

“Then why is my name here?””

“It was an old draft.””

“Then why does it have a signature?””

“I don't know.””

Robert snatched the document from my hand.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Robert's voice became louder.

“Where did you get this, Daniel?””

“It was in the business records.””

“You told me the business records were destroyed.””

“They weren't.””

Robert stared at him.

“You lied to me too.””

Daniel said nothing.

I felt like I was watching strangers argue over a life that had somehow become mine.

I turned away from them.

My eyes landed on the Christmas tree.

Three years earlier, I had stood beside that tree with Daniel and hung a silver ornament shaped like a house.

I had laughed when he told me it was symbolic.

“Our first real home,” he had said.

Our home.

I almost wanted to tear the ornament off the tree.

Instead, I whispered, “How long?””

Daniel looked at me.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been hiding all of this?””

He stared at the floor.

“About two years.””

Two years.

I felt a strange numbness spread through my body.

“So while I was sitting here worrying about the mortgage…”

“I was handling it.””

“While I thought we were saving for children…”

“I was handling it.””

“While I thought you were working late because the restaurant was struggling…”

“I was trying to fix it.””

“While your mother was telling me I wasn't contributing enough…”

“Emily—”

“Were you with her?””

His face froze.

I stared at him.

“Vanessa.””

He said nothing.

“Were you with Vanessa?””

“No.””

I didn't move.

“Look at me and answer.””

Daniel raised his eyes.

“No.””

Something about the way he said it made me believe him.

But that didn't make anything better.

“Did you sleep with her?””

“No.””

“Did you kiss her?””

“No.””

“Did you want to?””

He looked stunned.

“I don't know.””

I closed my eyes.

That answer hurt.

Not because it confirmed an affair.

Because it confirmed uncertainty.

And uncertainty was its own kind of betrayal.

Robert stepped between us.

“Enough.””

I opened my eyes.

“No.””

My voice was calmer now.

“I need to know everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't.””

“Yes.””

“You'll hate me.””

“I already don't recognize you.””

He looked shattered.

I continued.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked around the room.

At his mother.

At his sister.

At his father.

Then at me.

He finally sat down.

“I opened the restaurant eight years ago.””

Robert nodded.

“You already know that.””

“My first year was good.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Then business started slowing down.””

“Why?””

“Bad lease. Rising costs. Equipment repairs.””

“So you borrowed money.””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“At first? Forty thousand.””

I nodded slowly.

“And then?””

“Another eighty.””

My stomach twisted.

“Another?””

He didn't answer.

Robert did.

“One hundred and sixty thousand in total.””

I stared.

“That can't be right.””

“It is.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I thought I could recover.””

“With what?””

“Profit.””

“You weren't making profit.””

“No.””

“So what did you do?””

He swallowed.

“I started taking risks.””

“Gambling.””

“Yes.””

“How much did you lose?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“About sixty thousand.””

“Your money?””

He didn't answer.

“Whose money?””

Silence.

Robert closed his eyes.

“Some of it was business money.””

My heart sank.

I looked at Daniel.

“And the rest?””

He whispered.

“Some was from the line of credit.””

I suddenly understood.

The house.

The loan.

The restaurant.

Vanessa.

The photograph.

All of it was connected.

I walked toward the window.

Snow covered the lawn.

The same lawn where I had taken dozens of Christmas pictures.

The same lawn where Daniel had once knelt and promised me forever.

I touched the glass.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Daniel's voice broke.

“Because I thought I could fix it before you ever knew.””

I turned around.

“That's not why.””

“What?””

“You didn't tell me because you were afraid I'd leave.””

He stared at me.

“Yes.””

I nodded.

“So you decided I was easier to keep if I didn't know the truth.””

“That's not fair.””

“It is exactly fair.””

I looked toward his mother.

“And the family knew?””

Margaret stiffened.

Robert answered.

“I knew some of it.””

I looked at Claire.

She said nothing.

“Did you know?””

Claire crossed her arms.

“I knew Daniel had money problems.””

“Did you know he was gambling?””

“I suspected.””

“Did you know about Vanessa?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

My breath caught.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

I stared at her.

“And you said nothing?””

Claire's expression became defensive.

“It's not my marriage.””

I nodded slowly.

“No.””

I looked around the room.

“Apparently nobody's marriage means anything when keeping a secret is more convenient.””

Margaret stepped toward me.

“You're making everyone sound evil.””

I turned toward her.

“You slapped me tonight.””

Her face tightened.

“You were disrespectful.””

“You knew your son was drowning in debt.””

“He needed support.””

“You knew he was using me.””

“I did not know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

Margaret went silent.

I looked at her.

“You told me this was his house.””

She said nothing.

“You told me I should ask permission before making changes.””

Nothing.

“You told me I should be grateful.””

Her lips parted.

“You knew.””

She finally whispered, “I knew the family owned the property.””

Robert corrected her.

“The family did not.””

Margaret glared at him.

“You know what I mean.””

“No,” Robert said.

“I don't.””

I looked at Robert.

“Why didn't you tell me before tonight?””

He sighed.

“Because I wanted Daniel to tell you himself.””

“How long have you known about the debt?””

“Nearly two years.””

My stomach turned.

“Two years?””

“Yes.””

“And you watched?””

“I confronted him.””

“And?””

“He promised to stop.””

Robert looked at Daniel.

“He didn't.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“Is Vanessa the reason?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why does she have an ownership agreement?””

“Because she loaned me money.””

“Why would she loan you money?””

“I told her I would repay it.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then why is she still involved?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because she wants the property.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She wants the house.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“She has been threatening to sue.””

“For what?””

“Her investment.””

Robert stepped closer.

“What investment?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The money she put into the restaurant.””

I stared.

“Twenty-five thousand?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That was the first amount.””

“How much more?””

“Seventy-five thousand.””

My heart pounded.

“A hundred thousand?””

He nodded.

I couldn't speak.

Then Robert said something that made all the pieces click into place.

“The house was the guarantee.””

I looked at him.

“For Vanessa?””

Robert nodded.

“Daniel promised her a security interest in the property.””

I closed my eyes.

My husband had not only risked our finances.

He had risked the home I legally owned.

Without telling me.

I opened my eyes.

“Did Vanessa know the house was in my name?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Yes.””

That answer cut through me.

“She knew?””

“She found out.””

“When?””

“Around six months ago.””

I looked at the photograph.

Six months.

The words on the back suddenly made sense.

*Before Emily finds out.*

I turned to Daniel.

“Why did she photograph you?””

“She wanted proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That I promised her the house.””

I stared at him.

“You promised someone my house.””

“I didn't know the title was protected.””

“You knew my name was on it.””

“I thought the bank would never enforce it.””

I felt something inside me crack.

“You thought.””

He lowered his eyes.

“You gambled with my home based on what you thought.””

“Yes.””

I stepped backward.

My injured hand throbbed.

I looked at the ring beside his plate.

Then at Daniel.

“I want you out.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“This is my house.””

His face went white.

“Emily.””

“You heard me.””

“Where am I supposed to go?””

I pointed toward the front door.

“I don't care.””

Margaret immediately objected.

“You can't throw my son out on Christmas.””

I looked at her.

“I was thrown out emotionally three years ago.””

She recoiled.

Robert said nothing.

Daniel stood.

“Emily, please.””

“No.””

“I need time.””

“You had three years.””

“I can fix it.””

“You said that before.””

“I swear I can.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get another chance to gamble with my life.””

Daniel looked toward his father.

“Dad, tell her.””

Robert stared at him.

“You made your choice.””

Daniel's face crumpled.

Then the front door rattled.

Everyone turned.

A second later, the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Daniel froze.

Robert looked toward him.

“Who is that?””

Daniel's face had gone completely white.

I noticed.

So did Robert.

So did Margaret.

The bell rang again.

Three slow presses.

Someone outside was impatient.

Daniel whispered, “No.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who is it?””

He didn't answer.

I walked toward the foyer.

Daniel caught my wrist.

“Don't.””

I pulled away.

“Let go of me.””

His eyes were full of panic.

“Emily, you don't understand.””

I stepped closer to the door.

“What don't I understand?””

The bell rang again.

Then a woman's voice came through the glass.

Clear enough for all of us to hear.

“Daniel?””

Nobody moved.

I knew that voice before I had ever met the woman attached to it.

Vanessa.

“Daniel, I know you're in there.””

Margaret looked at her son.

“You told me she wasn't coming.””

Daniel didn't answer.

Robert turned slowly toward him.

“You knew she was coming?””

Daniel swallowed.

“No.””

The woman outside knocked.

Then she spoke again.

“Daniel, you have ten minutes.””

Silence.

“After that, I'm giving Emily everything.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Robert stared at him.

“What does she have?””

Daniel whispered the answer.

“Proof.””

I looked at the door.

“What kind of proof?””

He didn't respond.

Vanessa knocked again.

May you like

And then she said the one sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Emily, you deserve to know why your husband put your name on that second loan.””
