Chapter 8: The Woman My Grandmother Tried to Save
Daniel didn't say a word.
That was how I knew the message was real.
Because Daniel always had something to say.
An explanation.
A defense.
A reason.
A carefully prepared sentence designed to make me question myself.
But now?
Nothing.
He just stood there in the middle of the coffee shop, staring at my phone.
And for the first time since I had known him, I saw something I never thought I would see.
Fear.
Not the fear of losing me.
Not the fear of hurting me.
The fear of being exposed.
I lowered my phone.
"Who is she?""
Daniel looked away.
"Emily...""
"No.""
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Not another explanation.""
People around us continued drinking coffee, laughing quietly, living normal lives.
They had no idea that my entire life had changed in a single night.
"Who is she?""
Daniel sat back down.
His hands were shaking slightly.
I noticed.
Because I knew him.
Even after everything.
I still knew the small signs.
The things he did when he was hiding something.
His thumb rubbing against his palm.
His eyes avoiding mine.
The slight tightening of his jaw.
For years, I thought knowing those things meant I loved him.
Now I realized it just meant I had spent years studying a person who never bothered to study me.
"Her name was Claire.""
The name landed softly.
Almost too softly.
But it changed something in his expression.
I sat down again.
"Tell me.""
Daniel looked toward the window.
"I was younger.""
I almost laughed.
"How old?""
"Twenty-eight.""
I stared.
"You were twenty-eight.""
He nodded.
"That's not young, Daniel.""
He looked frustrated.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
I leaned forward.
"You're right.""
My voice hardened.
"I don't understand because I would never do what you did.""
He looked down.
After a long silence, he spoke.
"Claire was before Lauren.""
I waited.
"She invested in my first company.""
"The one that failed?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
I remembered what Richard had said.
The first time Daniel tried to use someone else's money.
"How much did she lose?""
Daniel didn't answer.
I didn't need him to.
"How much?""
"About two hundred thousand dollars.""
My chest tightened.
Two hundred thousand.
Another person.
Another life.
Another story he had buried.
"Did she know you couldn't pay it back?""
He swallowed.
"No.""
The answer was immediate.
"Then what did she think?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"She thought the company was doing well.""
I looked at him.
"Because you told her that.""
He didn't deny it.
The silence was enough.
I felt sick.
Not because of the money.
Because of the pattern.
The same pattern.
The same words.
The same promises.
Everyone who trusted him was given the same version of Daniel.
The ambitious man.
The hardworking man.
The man who just needed one more chance.
"Where is she now?""
Daniel didn't answer.
"Where is Claire?""
He looked at me.
"I don't know.""
I knew immediately he was lying.
Not because I had proof.
Because I had lived with him too long.
"You know.""
His face tightened.
"Emily.""
"You know where she is.""
He looked away.
I stood.
"Then I'll find out myself.""
"Wait.""
I stopped.
Daniel looked desperate.
"Don't contact her.""
The words surprised me.
Not because of what he said.
Because of how he said it.
Like I had found the one thing he truly feared.
"Why?""
He didn't answer.
"Why don't you want me to contact her?""
Daniel ran a hand through his hair.
"Because she hates me.""
I stared.
"Good.""
The word escaped before I could stop it.
His face fell.
And I hated that a small part of me still remembered the person he used to be.
But that part was getting smaller.
"I need to go.""
I turned.
"Emily.""
I stopped.
His voice was different.
Quieter.
"Do you really think I never loved you?""
I stood still.
The question hurt.
Because some part of me still wanted an answer.
I turned slightly.
"I think you loved what I gave you.""
His expression changed.
"The money.""
"The security.""
"The image.""
I looked at him.
"But not me.""
I walked away.
And this time, he didn't follow.
Richard was waiting outside.
Not alone.
Lauren was with him.
The moment I stepped outside, Richard looked at my face.
He knew.
"What did he tell you?""
I looked at him.
"Claire.""
Lauren's expression changed.
"You found out about her?""
I nodded.
"Who is she?""
Richard exchanged a look with Lauren.
That bothered me.
Because it meant there was something else.
"Tell me.""
Richard sighed.
"Claire was the first person who tried to warn me about Daniel.""
I froze.
"She knew you?""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Richard looked down.
"Because she came to my office.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because she wanted help.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"What kind of help?""
Richard looked at Lauren.
Then back at me.
"She wanted to stop him.""
The street felt suddenly quieter.
"Stop him from what?""
Richard's face became serious.
"Doing it again.""
Again.
That word followed me everywhere.
Because Daniel wasn't a mistake.
He was a pattern.
I crossed my arms.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Richard looked ashamed.
"Because I didn't know how.""
I stared.
"You had years.""
"I know.""
The honesty surprised me.
He didn't defend himself.
Didn't explain.
Just admitted it.
"I thought if I told you, you would hate me.""
I looked away.
"I do hate that you stayed silent.""
He nodded.
"I understand.""
That was the first apology I had heard all night that didn't come with an excuse.
It felt strange.
Almost unfamiliar.
Lauren stepped closer.
"There is something else about Claire.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"She didn't just lose money.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
Lauren hesitated.
"She lost her family.""
I frowned.
"Because of Daniel?""
Lauren nodded.
"Her husband divorced her.""
I stared.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel convinced him Claire was unstable.""
My blood ran cold.
"Unstable?""
Lauren nodded.
"He told people she was obsessed with him.""
I remembered Daniel's message.
The fake document.
The way he was trying to make me look guilty.
"He destroyed her reputation.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
I felt something shift inside me.
Until that moment, this had been about my marriage.
My money.
My pain.
But suddenly, I understood.
Daniel didn't just hurt people.
He rewrote their stories.
He made himself the victim.
And made them the problem.
"Where is Claire now?""
Richard pulled out his phone.
"I have her number.""
I looked at him.
"You do?""
"She contacted me again yesterday.""
I froze.
"Yesterday?""
Richard nodded.
"She said she had something important.""
"What?""
He looked at me.
"She said Daniel was not working alone.""
I felt the same cold feeling again.
Victor Hale.
The name from the messages.
The person behind the person.
"Where is she?""
Richard checked his phone.
"She sent me an address.""
"Then let's go.""
Lauren looked surprised.
"Now?""
I looked at her.
"Yes.""
Because I finally understood something.
Waiting was what Daniel wanted.
Time gave him power.
Time gave him room to manipulate.
Time gave him the chance to rewrite the story.
I had spent eight years giving him time.
I wasn't giving him another hour.
Claire lived in a small apartment on the other side of town.
Nothing about the building looked dramatic.
No signs.
No warnings.
No indication that someone inside had once been connected to a man who nearly destroyed multiple lives.
Richard knocked.
For several seconds, nobody answered.
Then the door opened slightly.
A woman looked out.
She was older than I expected.
Tired eyes.
Short hair.
A face that looked like it had learned not to trust easily.
When she saw Richard, she relaxed.
Then she saw me.
Her expression changed.
"You must be Emily.""
My heart tightened.
"How do you know my name?""
Claire looked at Richard.
Then back at me.
"Because I was waiting for you.""
The words sent a chill through me.
"Waiting?""
She opened the door wider.
"Come inside.""
The apartment was simple.
Clean.
Almost empty.
Like someone who didn't want to become attached to anything.
Claire sat down.
I remained standing.
"Tell me everything.""
She looked at my bandaged hand.
Then my face.
And her eyes filled with sadness.
"He did that to you?""
I swallowed.
"No.""
I looked away.
"His mother did.""
Claire closed her eyes.
But she wasn't surprised.
That hurt more.
"You know what the worst part is?""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"Daniel always finds people who want to believe the best in him.""
She opened a drawer.
Removed a folder.
And placed it on the table.
"I kept everything.""
My eyes moved to the folder.
"What is it?""
"Proof.""
I opened it.
Inside were emails.
Contracts.
Financial records.
Photographs.
The same type of evidence Richard had shown me.
But there was something else.
A handwritten letter.
I recognized the handwriting instantly.
My grandmother.
I looked up.
"Why do you have this?""
Claire's expression changed.
"Because your grandmother found me before she died.""
The room went silent.
"What?""
Claire nodded.
"She knew.""
My fingers tightened around the letter.
"Knew what?""
Claire looked directly at me.
"She knew Daniel was going after you.""
The air disappeared from my lungs.
"No.""
"Yes.""
"How?""
Claire looked down.
"Because she hired me.""
I stared.
"She hired you?""
"To investigate him.""
My grandmother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who always told me to trust my instincts.
She knew.
She had known.
And she had been preparing for this.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
Claire's eyes softened.
"Because she tried.""
I froze.
"What?""
Claire reached into the folder.
She pulled out another document.
A letter.
Addressed to me.
But the date was impossible.
It was written three months before my wedding.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The first line made my breath catch.
*Emily, if you are reading this, I am either gone, or I have failed to protect you.*
I stopped.
Claire watched me.
I kept reading.
*There is something you need to know about Daniel Carter.*
My heart pounded.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And one sentence made me drop the letter.
*Daniel did not choose you by accident. He chose you because of someone you have never met.*
I looked up.
"Someone I have never met?""
Claire nodded.
"Yes.""
My voice became a whisper.
"Who?""
Claire looked at Richard.
Then at me.
And finally said:
"Your mother.""
I froze.
Because my mother had been dead for fifteen years.
And Daniel had always told me he never met her.
But Claire reached into the folder one more time.
She pulled out an old photograph.
A photograph of Daniel.
Standing beside a woman.
A woman I recognized immediately.
My mother.
And on the back of the photograph was a date.
A date from before I ever met Daniel.
A date that proved he had been lying from the very beginning.
Claire looked at me.
"Emily...""
She hesitated.
Then said the words that changed everything.
"Your husband didn't discover your inheritance after he met you.""
May you like
She pushed the photograph toward me.
"He knew about you before you knew about him.""
