Chapter 8

The trial became national news.
The heiress.
The nanny.
The baby.
The fiancée who wanted a fortune.
Reporters camped outside the courthouse.
They shouted questions whenever Victor arrived.
“Did you ignore warning signs?”
“Did Serena manipulate you?”
“Is Lily Harper Ethan’s new guardian?”
Victor never answered.
He carried Ethan through a private entrance with one hand protecting the back of his head.
I testified on the third day.
My hands shook when I sat down.
Serena watched me from the defense table.
She looked polished again.
Soft makeup.
Simple dress.
Sad eyes.
The performance was back.
Her attorney smiled at me.
“Miss Harper, you were emotionally attached to the child, weren’t you?”
“Yes.”
“Too attached?”
“No.”
“You wanted to replace Serena.”
“I wanted Ethan safe.”
He held up my notebook.
“You documented my client for weeks. Is that normal nanny behavior?”
I looked at the jury.
“No. It is scared nanny behavior.”
A woman in the front row wiped her eyes.
The attorney pressed harder.
“You never saw Serena seriously injure Ethan, did you?”
“I saw him afraid of her.”
“That was not my question.”
I took a breath.
“I saw her kick me while I was holding him.”
The courtroom went silent.
He tried to twist it.
“You could have dropped him.”
“I twisted so I wouldn’t.”
“Convenient.”
Victor’s fist clenched.
The judge warned the attorney.
Then the prosecutor played the hospital photos of my bruised ribs.
Then the nursery audio from the mansion alarm system.
Serena’s voice filled the courtroom.
“He is a fortune.”
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But the jury saw it.
Victor testified next.
He did not protect his pride.
He told the court he had been blind.
He admitted Serena used his grief.
He admitted he ignored Lily’s fear because he wanted a perfect family again.
Serena stared at him with hatred.
Then the prosecutor asked, “What made you believe Miss Harper?”
Victor looked at me.
“Because she was on the floor in pain, still holding my son like he mattered more than her own body.”
I looked down.
Tears fell onto my hands.
Dr. Mercer testified about Emily’s warning.
Detective Grace testified about ValeBridge.
Nathan Price testified after taking a plea.
He named Serena as the planner.
Caleb as the enforcer.
Himself as the legal cover.
Serena’s mother as the woman who introduced them to families with money.
Then came the last video.
Emily, pregnant and scared, speaking into the camera.
“If I do not survive, please believe whoever protects my son when I cannot.”
The courtroom broke.
Even the judge looked down.
Serena finally lost control.
“She was weak!” she shouted. “She had everything and wasted it!”
The jury stared at her.
Her attorney whispered for her to stop.
But Serena kept going.
“I would have been a better mother. A better wife. A better Hale.”
Victor stood.
“You were never a mother.”
Security moved toward him.
He sat back down.
Serena smiled through tears.
Then Ethan, watching from a private room on video with Mrs. Alvarez, reached toward the screen and said one word.
“Lily.”
May you like
The jury heard it.
And Serena heard it too.
