Surprise

Chapter 3

The first piece of evidence against Vanessa was a photograph.

Not a bank statement.

Not a secret contract.

A photograph taken three months before I ever met her.

Claire placed it on the table in front of me.

I recognized the setting immediately.

The Bennett Family Foundation's annual charity gala.

I had attended that event with my father as a volunteer.

At the time, I believed he was simply donating his weekend to a good cause.

In the photograph, Vanessa stood beside Diane.

Both wore elegant evening gowns.

Between them stood a man I didn't recognize.

And behind them, hanging on the wall, was a portrait.

My father's portrait.

I stared at it.

"Why does this matter?"

Claire looked uncomfortable.

"The date, Mr. Bennett."

I checked it again.

The photograph was taken three months before Vanessa and I met at a coffee shop.

Three months before she accidentally spilled her drink on my laptop.

Three months before she laughed and insisted on buying me another.

The memory suddenly felt poisoned.

"She knew who my father was?"

Claire didn't answer immediately.

"We're still determining what she knew and when."

My father stood by the window.

His face was heavy with regret.

"I should have told you sooner," he said.

I shook my head.

"Don't."

"Michael—"

"No, Dad. You didn't make Vanessa lie to me."

I picked up the photograph.

The unidentified man had his hand resting against Diane's shoulder.

"Who's this?"

Claire checked her notes.

"Richard Hale. Financial director of Whitmore Enterprises."

I remembered him.

Richard had attended several dinners at Diane's mansion.

He had always been polite.

Too polite.

Whenever I entered a room, he stopped talking.

I had assumed he disliked me because I worked as an architect at a modest firm.

Now I wasn't so sure.

"What does Richard have to do with the transfers?"

Claire opened another file.

"Investigators identified payments from three consulting companies connected to him."

My father turned.

"Are those the same companies?"

"Yes, sir."

My father exhaled sharply.

I looked between them.

"What same companies?"

Dad sat opposite me.

"Six months ago, Bennett Global began negotiations to acquire Whitmore Enterprises."

I frowned.

"Vanessa never mentioned an acquisition."

"Neither did Diane."

"Why?"

"Because the Whitmore company is in serious financial trouble."

I remembered Diane boasting about her family's fortune.

The mansion.

The imported cars.

The luxury vacations.

The constant comments about people who couldn't afford their lifestyle.

"How serious?"

Dad folded his hands.

"Without outside financing, they may not survive the year."

I stared at him.

"So Diane needs your company?"

"Yes."

"And she had no idea you were my father?"

He hesitated.

"She knew the name of the company founder. But our ownership is held through several private entities, and I rarely appear publicly."

Claire added, "Many photographs online are outdated. The official chairman is a different executive."

I looked at the picture again.

Then I remembered something.

Vanessa had once asked for my father's full legal name.

We were cooking dinner.

She had claimed her mother wanted it for the wedding invitations.

At the time, I hadn't thought twice.

A strange memory surfaced.

Vanessa had asked whether my father owned any property.

Another time, she'd wanted to know whether he had investments.

Then she'd laughed and said she was curious about retirement planning.

I had told her Dad was a retired mechanic.

She seemed disappointed.

I stood abruptly.

"Where is Vanessa?"

Claire looked alarmed.

"Michael, perhaps you should wait for the investigators."

"I need to speak to her."

Dad approached me.

"Son, you won't get the truth by shouting."

I looked at him.

"Then how?"

"By asking a question and listening carefully to the answer."

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa entered the suite.

Her wedding gown was still immaculate.

Her makeup had been repaired.

But her eyes were swollen.

"Michael."

She rushed toward me.

I stepped aside.

She stopped.

"Please don't do this."

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Do what?"

"Destroy everything we built."

I tapped the picture.

"Explain this."

She looked down.

Her expression changed instantly.

"Where did you get that?"

"Do you recognize it?"

"Of course. It's a charity event."

"Before we met."

She swallowed.

"Yes."

"My father's portrait is behind you."

Vanessa looked toward Dad.

Then back at me.

"So?"

I felt my stomach sink.

"So you attended his foundation's gala."

"Lots of people attended."

"Did you know who he was?"

"No."

Her answer came too quickly.

I watched her face.

"Vanessa, look me in the eyes."

She did.

And repeated, "I didn't know."

I wanted to believe her.

God, I wanted to.

Then Dad quietly asked a question.

"Why did your mother submit Michael's employment history to Richard Hale?"

Vanessa froze.

The silence stretched.

"What?"

Dad placed another document beside the photograph.

"We found a background report. Richard ordered it shortly after you began dating Michael."

Vanessa stared at the pages.

"That's ridiculous."

"Your name appears in the request."

She backed away.

"I don't know anything about that."

I looked at her.

"Did your mother tell you to date me?"

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

"Michael, please."

"Answer."

She covered her mouth.

I felt myself trembling.

"Was anything between us real?"

Vanessa sank into a chair.

For several seconds, she cried.

Then she whispered, "It wasn't supposed to happen this way."

I stopped breathing.

"What wasn't?"

She wiped her cheeks.

"My mother asked me to meet you."

The room seemed to tilt.

I gripped the table.

"She arranged the coffee shop?"

Vanessa nodded.

I laughed once.

A terrible, empty sound.

"The spilled drink?"

She looked away.

I understood.

Three years of anniversaries.

Three years of whispered promises.

Three years of memories.

And the beginning had been staged.

"Why?" I asked.

Vanessa sobbed.

"Because my mother thought your father would eventually reveal his wealth to you. She wanted our families connected before the acquisition."

My father closed his eyes.

I felt sick.

"So you agreed to marry me for money?"

"No!"

Vanessa jumped up.

"I agreed to meet you because she pressured me. But I fell in love with you!"

I stared at her.

"Then why did you laugh at him today?"

She had no answer.

That hurt more than anything.

I walked toward the door.

Vanessa called after me.

"Michael, my mother said she'd destroy me if I told you!"

I stopped.

"What do you mean?"

She reached beneath the lace of her dress and pulled out a small key.

Her hands shook violently.

"There's a safe in my mother's private office."

She pressed the key into my palm.

"Richard keeps documents there."

I stared at it.

"What documents?"

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"Proof that the acquisition wasn't the only thing my mother was planning."

My father stepped forward.

"What else?"

Vanessa looked straight at him.

May you like

"She was planning to take control of your company through Michael."

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.
