Surprise

Chapter 9

Five months later, I stood in a hospital hallway holding a tiny pink blanket.

My hands were shaking.

Aaliyah was in the delivery room.

Our daughter was coming.

And I had never been so frightened in my life.

Dad stood beside me.

He looked calmer than I felt.

But when I looked closely, I noticed his hands were trembling too.

"Dad?"

He turned.

"Yeah?"

"I'm going to pass out."

He laughed softly.

"Probably not."

I stared at him.

"That's not reassuring."

He grinned.

"Then sit down."

I sat.

For a moment, I stared at the blanket.

It was soft.

Pink.

With tiny white stars.

Aaliyah had chosen it weeks earlier.

Now it was about to hold our daughter.

I swallowed.

"Dad, what if I mess everything up?"

His expression softened.

"Jordan..."

I looked at him.

"What if I'm not good enough?"

He sat beside me.

"You're going to make mistakes."

My stomach tightened.

He continued.

"Every parent does."

I nodded.

"But the important thing is what you do afterward."

I looked up.

He smiled gently.

"You listen. You learn. You apologize when you're wrong."

My throat tightened.

"And you keep showing up."

I nodded slowly.

Then the nurse appeared.

"Jordan?"

I stood immediately.

"Yes?"

"Aaliyah is asking for you."

My heart pounded.

I looked at Dad.

He smiled.

"Go."

I took a breath.

Then followed the nurse.

Inside, Aaliyah was lying in the hospital bed.

Her face was tired.

Her hair was damp.

But when she saw me, she smiled.

"Jordan."

I rushed toward her.

"I'm here."

She grabbed my hand.

"I'm scared."

I swallowed.

"Me too."

She laughed weakly.

"You're supposed to say something comforting."

I leaned closer.

"I love you."

Her eyes filled.

"That's better."

I kissed her forehead.

For the next several hours, I stayed beside her.

I held her hand.

Helped her breathe.

Listened to the medical team.

And tried not to panic every time she looked uncomfortable.

I had never felt so helpless.

Or so determined to be useful.

Then, finally, I heard a sound that changed my entire life.

A cry.

Small.

Strong.

Beautiful.

Our daughter.

The clinician announced that she had arrived.

I stared.

For a moment, I couldn't move.

Then I started crying.

Aaliyah looked at me.

"Jordan?"

I laughed through tears.

"She's here."

Aaliyah began sobbing.

The medical team cared for our baby and made sure she was doing well.

Then they placed her in Aaliyah's arms.

I leaned closer.

Our daughter had tiny fingers.

Soft cheeks.

And the most beautiful face I'd ever seen.

I couldn't stop staring.

Aaliyah looked up.

"Meet your daughter."

My throat closed.

I touched the baby's tiny hand.

She curled her fingers around mine.

And I felt something inside me change forever.

"Hi, baby girl."

My voice broke.

"I'm your daddy."

Aaliyah smiled through tears.

I looked at her.

"You did it."

She laughed weakly.

"We did it."

I kissed her forehead.

For a moment, nothing else mattered.

Not the arguments.

Not the fear.

Not the money.

Just our little family.

Later, Dad entered the room.

He stopped when he saw the baby.

His eyes filled.

"Oh, my goodness."

I laughed.

"Dad, meet your granddaughter."

He slowly approached.

"She's beautiful."

Aaliyah smiled.

"Thank you."

Dad looked at me.

His voice broke.

"Jordan, I'm proud of you."

I started crying again.

I couldn't help it.

He hugged me.

For a moment, I felt like a little boy.

Then he pulled back.

"What's her name?"

I looked toward Aaliyah.

She smiled.

We had discussed names for months.

But we hadn't agreed until the night before.

I took a breath.

"Grace."

Dad's expression softened.

"Grace."

I nodded.

"Grace Michelle Mitchell."

Aaliyah smiled.

Dad wiped his eyes.

"That's beautiful."

Then the door opened.

Mom stood in the hallway.

She was holding flowers.

Her eyes were already wet.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I smiled.

"Mom."

She looked at me.

"Can I come in?"

I glanced toward Aaliyah.

She nodded.

I turned back.

"Of course."

Mom entered slowly.

When she saw Grace, she covered her mouth.

"Oh, Jordan."

Her voice broke.

I smiled through tears.

"Meet your granddaughter."

Mom began crying.

She approached carefully.

Then looked toward Aaliyah.

"May I?"

Aaliyah smiled.

"Would you like to hold her?"

Mom nodded immediately.

Aaliyah gently placed Grace in her arms.

Mom stared at the baby.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she whispered, "Hello, sweetheart."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I'm your grandma."

I watched her.

Months earlier, she'd been shouting at us in the hallway.

Now she was holding our daughter with trembling hands.

She looked toward Aaliyah.

"Thank you for letting me be here."

Aaliyah smiled softly.

"You're welcome."

Mom swallowed.

"I know I haven't made this easy."

I nodded.

She continued.

"But I want to keep doing better."

I looked at Dad.

He smiled gently.

For the first time, I believed our family might find a new way forward.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Patricia.

Aaliyah's mother.

I looked at the screen.

My stomach tightened.

The message was short.

"Is the baby here? Please tell Aaliyah I want to see her."

I looked toward Aaliyah.

May you like

Her smile faded.

And suddenly, I realized the last difficult conversation still hadn't happened.
