Chapter 2: Five Minutes
Five minutes after I said the words, Adrian’s phone began to ring.
He glanced at the screen.
Once.
Twice.
Then again.
The color drained from his face so quickly that even Vanessa noticed.
“Who keeps calling you?”” she asked.
Adrian didn’t answer.
His thumb hovered over the screen.
The caller ID read:
*MARTIN KNOX — CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER*
Adrian finally answered.
“Martin?””
For two seconds, there was only silence.
Then Martin spoke so loudly that I could hear his voice from several feet away.
“Adrian, where the hell have you been?””
Adrian frowned.
“I’m at home.””
“Get to the office.””
“Why?””
“Now.””
Adrian looked at me.
I said nothing.
Martin continued.
“I just got off a call with the bank.””
“What bank?””
“The one financing your bridge facility.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
“What about them?””
“They froze the transfer.””
His grip tightened around the phone.
“What transfer?””
“The emergency liquidity transfer you authorized this morning.””
Adrian stared into the distance.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“I know.””
“Then fix it.””
“I’m trying.””
“You’re the chief legal officer. Fix it.””
Martin lowered his voice.
“There’s something else.””
Adrian’s jaw flexed.
“What?””
“They received a notice from Ellison Capital.””
The name hit him like a physical blow.
I watched him.
He didn’t know what it meant.
Not yet.
Vanessa looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
Then back at me.
She was beginning to understand that whatever game she thought she had started was much bigger than the three of us.
Adrian turned away from me.
“Why would Ellison Capital contact our bank?””
Martin hesitated.
“Because they acquired a controlling interest in one of our largest lenders.””
Adrian went completely still.
“What?””
“Your lender’s board is meeting right now.””
“Who authorized this?””
“I don’t know.””
“You’re telling me someone can just—”
“Adrian.””
Martin cut him off.
“There’s more.””
The silence stretched.
“Your outside auditor called.””
Adrian swallowed.
“And?””
“They want an emergency meeting.””
“Why?””
Martin’s voice dropped.
“Because they found discrepancies in the last two quarters.””
Adrian’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“What discrepancies?””
“I’ll explain at the office.””
“Martin.””
“I said I’ll explain at the office.””
The call ended.
Adrian lowered the phone.
For a moment, none of us moved.
Then Vanessa walked toward him.
“Whatever this is, we can handle it.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You said everything was under control.””
Vanessa blinked.
“It is.””
“You said the leak would be enough to scare her.””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“You don’t have to talk to me like that.””
Adrian turned sharply.
“You told me the documents were real.””
“They are.””
“My lawyer just called me about an audit.””
“That has nothing to do with me.””
“Doesn’t it?””
Vanessa stepped back.
“What are you implying?””
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
My father once told me that the most dangerous moment for a liar was not when the truth appeared.
It was when the liar realized the person beside them was beginning to question the lie.
I remembered sitting across from Dad in his library three months before my wedding.
He had looked at the engagement ring on my finger.
“Men who want you,” he’d said, “will ask what they can build with you.””
He had leaned back in his chair.
“Men who want your status will ask what your family owns.””
I’d smiled.
“Adrian has never asked about the company.””
“I know.””
“He thinks I’m just Claire.””
“That’s why I haven’t said a word.””
I had laughed then.
“You actually approve of him?””
“No.””
I had stared at him.
“Dad.””
“I don’t distrust him because he’s poor.””
“I know.””
“I distrust him because every time his name appears in the financial press, he talks about expansion, leverage, acquisition and dominance.””
Dad had paused.
“People who constantly need more rarely know when they have enough.””
I had kissed his cheek.
“You’re overthinking it.””
He had looked at me for a long moment.
“Maybe.””
Then he had added something I never forgot.
“But if I’m right, Claire, remember one thing.””
“What?””
“You don’t have to fight him.””
I had smiled.
“I can handle myself.””
“I know.””
His expression had become very calm.
“You don’t understand what I’m saying.””
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying that if he ever becomes cruel enough to make you my enemy…”
He had folded his hands.
“…I will become his.””
I remembered laughing because it had sounded dramatic.
Now, standing in my own living room with bruises burning across my skin, I finally understood.
Dad had never been dramatic.
He had been patient.
Adrian’s phone rang again.
This time, the number was unfamiliar.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Mercer, this is Diane Ross from First Dominion.””
Adrian straightened.
“Yes.””
“We need to inform you that your corporate credit lines are currently under review.””
“Under review?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“The bank has received information regarding potential misrepresentation in your latest financial disclosures.””
Adrian looked stunned.
“What information?””
“I’m not authorized to discuss the source.””
“I’m the CEO.””
“And we are still unable to discuss the source.””
He gripped the back of a chair.
“This is absurd.””
“Mr. Mercer, your company has twelve hours to provide documentation supporting several outstanding figures.””
“Twelve hours?””
“Yes.””
“And if I don’t?””
There was a pause.
“Your facilities will be suspended pending investigation.””
The line went dead.
Adrian lowered his phone.
Vanessa approached him.
“Adrian?””
He didn’t answer.
She touched his arm.
He jerked away.
“Don’t.””
Her eyes widened.
“Don’t what?””
“Touch me.””
“Adrian, I’m trying to help.””
“You said you could fix this.””
“I can.””
“Then fix it.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I picked up a glass of water from the table.
My hand was shaking slightly.
Not from fear.
From exhaustion.
Adrian noticed the blood on my palm.
His gaze dropped to it.
For a second, I saw something familiar in his face.
Regret.
Then pride buried it.
He looked at me.
“What did you do?””
I took a sip.
“Nothing.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
I lowered the glass.
“I didn’t have to.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means your company was already unstable.””
His face hardened.
“You knew?””
“I knew more than you thought.””
Vanessa stared at me.
“How?””
I looked at her.
“Because you were careless.””
She laughed nervously.
“Careless?””
“Yes.””
“The security report you used to frame me had a revision number from an old server.””
Her smile disappeared.
I continued.
“The server was decommissioned fourteen months ago.””
Adrian slowly turned toward her.
Vanessa’s voice became quieter.
“I didn’t create that report.””
“Of course you didn’t.””
“You’re accusing me.””
“No.””
I set the glass down.
“I’m telling the truth.””
Adrian looked between us.
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
“Where did the report come from?””
“I told you. Someone sent it to me.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
She crossed her arms.
“You believed it five minutes ago.””
The room went silent.
That sentence landed harder than anything else she had said.
Adrian looked away.
His phone vibrated again.
A message appeared.
He opened it.
His eyebrows pulled together.
Then another message arrived.
Then another.
His fingers began moving quickly across the screen.
“What happened?”” Vanessa asked.
“Payroll.””
“What about it?””
“Payroll was rejected.””
She stared at him.
“What?””
He opened his banking application.
The screen loaded.
Then froze.
He refreshed it.
Nothing.
His breathing changed.
“No.””
I watched him scroll.
“No, no, no…”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“What?””
He looked at the screen.
“The operating account is restricted.””
She went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
“It just happened.””
“Call the bank.””
“I’m already calling.””
He dialed.
While it rang, I heard footsteps in the hallway.
Our housekeeper, Mrs. Bell, appeared at the doorway.
She looked at me.
Then at Adrian.
Her face tightened when she saw my injuries.
“Mrs. Hart…”
“I’m fine.””
Her eyes moved to the belt lying on the floor.
She looked at Adrian.
Then down again.
She didn’t need an explanation.
She quietly walked over and picked up a folded blanket.
“Sit down,” she told me.
Adrian looked irritated.
“Leave us.””
Mrs. Bell didn’t move.
“Mr. Mercer, she is bleeding.””
“She said she’s fine.””
Mrs. Bell looked directly at him.
“With respect, sir, people say that when they don’t feel safe.””
Adrian stared at her.
Then she walked toward me anyway.
I sat on the edge of the sofa.
She draped the blanket around my shoulders.
Her hands trembled when she saw the welts across my back.
“You should go to a doctor.””
“I will.””
Adrian’s phone call connected.
“Yes,” he snapped.
“This is Adrian Mercer.””
A male voice answered.
Adrian listened.
Then his expression collapsed.
“What do you mean the account is locked?””
Another pause.
“On whose authority?””
Pause.
“Give me the name.””
His eyes lifted toward me.
He looked terrified.
The bank representative said something else.
Adrian’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Finally he whispered:
“Ellison.””
I closed my eyes.
Dad had moved faster than I expected.
Of course he had.
My father didn’t own the largest private investment network in the country by making slow decisions.
He owned it by making decisions before anyone else realized there was a decision to make.
Adrian ended the call.
His face was white.
“Claire.””
I opened my eyes.
“What?””
“Who is your father?””
Vanessa looked at me.
She had stopped breathing.
I almost smiled.
“Why?””
“Who is he?””
I said nothing.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You called him.””
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
“My father.””
“Don’t play games.””
“I’m not.””
“Your father just contacted my bank.””
I shrugged.
“Maybe you should ask your bank why.””
“You know exactly why.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
And for the first time, I heard fear in his voice.
Not anger.
Not pride.
Fear.
He knelt slightly, lowering himself so we were eye level.
“Please.””
The word sounded strange coming from him.
“Tell me.””
I studied his face.
Three years.
Three years of dinners.
Three years of vacations.
Three years of birthdays.
Three years of sleeping beside him.
And now he was asking me the same question he had never cared enough to ask before.
Who are you?
“I’m Claire.””
“That’s not enough.””
“It should have been.””
He flinched.
Vanessa interrupted.
“Adrian, we need to leave.””
He turned.
“Where?””
“My apartment.””
“Why?””
“Because reporters are outside.””
I looked toward the front windows.
The faint flash of cameras had begun.
Adrian rushed toward the curtains.
He pulled them aside.
Three black SUVs sat at the curb.
Reporters crowded the driveway.
One shouted his name.
Another shouted mine.
“Mrs. Mercer!””
“Mr. Mercer!””
“Is Mercer Dynamics under federal investigation?””
“Did your bank freeze your accounts?””
“Are you stepping down?””
Vanessa backed away from the window.
“How did they get here so fast?””
I looked at her.
She stared back.
Then something seemed to occur to her.
“You called the press.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
My father again.
I didn’t need to ask.
The front doorbell rang.
Once.
Then twice.
Adrian stood frozen.
Mrs. Bell looked at me.
“Should I answer it?””
I shook my head.
The doorbell rang again.
Then someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Adrian whispered, “Who is that?””
My phone vibrated.
I looked down.
A text message from Dad.
*OPEN THE DOOR.*
I stared at it.
Then at Adrian.
He saw my expression.
“What?””
I stood.
Mrs. Bell started to protest, but I raised a hand.
“I’m okay.””
I walked toward the front entrance.
Every step hurt.
But I kept going.
The cameras outside continued flashing through the glass.
Adrian followed several feet behind.
Vanessa stayed near the fireplace.
Her eyes were fixed on me.
I unlocked the door.
Before I could open it, a man on the other side spoke.
“Claire?””
I knew that voice.
My father’s chief of security.
“Ethan,” I said.
“Your father asked me to bring you somewhere safe.””
I opened the door.
Ethan Mercer—not related to Adrian despite the surname—stood there in a dark suit.
Two security officers stood behind him.
Adrian stared.
“What is this?””
Ethan looked at him.
“Mr. Mercer.””
“How did you get here?””
Ethan’s expression didn’t change.
“Your security system is no longer under your control.””
Adrian went rigid.
“What did you say?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Mr. Ellison would like you to leave the property.””
Adrian laughed.
It sounded desperate.
“This is my house.””
I looked at the marble staircase.
The photographs.
The wedding portraits.
The life I had built.
Then I looked back at him.
“No.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“It’s my house.””
“That’s not possible.””
I reached into the console drawer beside the door.
I pulled out a folder.
Adrian stared at it.
“What is that?””
I opened it.
“Purchase documents.””
His face changed.
“The house was purchased under an LLC.””
“Yes.””
“Your name isn’t on it.””
“No.””
“Whose is it?””
I looked at him.
“Ellison Family Holdings.””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
Adrian took a step backward.
“Claire…”
I closed the folder.
“Do you know what’s funny?””
He couldn’t answer.
“You always told everyone this was your house.””
I gestured around us.
“You held business meetings here. You invited investors here. You told people you had built all of this.””
My voice stayed calm.
“But you never asked who bought it.””
He looked genuinely lost.
“Why would you hide all this from me?””
I stared at him.
“Because Dad wanted to know whether you loved me.””
“And?””
I let the silence answer.
Adrian looked down.
The reporters outside screamed another question.
“Mr. Mercer! Are you filing for bankruptcy?””
His eyes snapped toward the door.
“No.””
Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
Then looked at me.
“Claire.””
“What?””
“There’s been another development.””
He handed me his phone.
A message from my father’s office.
*MERCER DYNAMICS BOARD MEETING CALLED. CEO REMOVAL MOTION FILED.*
I looked up.
Adrian noticed my face.
“What?””
I handed the phone to him.
He read the message.
His knees almost buckled.
“No.””
Vanessa grabbed his shoulder.
“Adrian, breathe.””
He shoved her away.
“You did this!””
Her face twisted.
“Me?””
“You brought her into my life!””
“I was trying to protect you!””
“You told me she was the problem!””
“You believed me!””
They stared at each other.
And suddenly, the truth was standing in the room with us.
Vanessa had never loved Adrian.
Adrian had never trusted himself.
And I had spent three years pretending not to see either.
Adrian looked at me.
“Call your father.””
I didn’t move.
“Please.””
I watched him struggle to keep his composure.
“What do you want me to say?””
“Tell him to stop.””
I almost laughed.
“You think this started tonight?””
His eyes filled with disbelief.
“What?””
“This started long before you raised that belt.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Dad has been watching your company for almost a year.””
Adrian’s face went blank.
“Why?””
“Because you were already drowning.””
He whispered, “You knew.””
“I knew your debt ratios.””
He stared at me.
“I knew your acquisition was overleveraged.””
His breathing became uneven.
“I knew three of your subsidiaries were losing money.””
Vanessa stepped backward.
I continued.
“And I knew your supposedly brilliant executive consultant had been moving money through a shell company.””
Vanessa froze.
Adrian slowly turned toward her.
“What shell company?””
She said nothing.
“Vanessa.””
Nothing.
He looked at me.
“What shell company?””
I held his gaze.
“The one registered under a name you’ve never seen.””
His face tightened.
“What name?””
I smiled without warmth.
“Give your father’s old lawyer a call.””
Adrian swallowed.
“My father’s lawyer died.””
“No.””
I paused.
“He retired.””
Adrian’s eyes widened.
“And Dad bought his firm six months ago.””
The room fell silent.
Then his phone rang one more time.
He looked at the screen.
This time, he didn’t answer.
Because the caller ID said:
*BOARD CHAIRMAN.*
The ringing continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Adrian finally pressed accept.
He listened.
Then the chairman spoke.
“Adrian, the board has voted.””
Adrian’s face emptied of color.
“What did you vote?””
A pause.
Then the chairman said four words.
“You are no longer CEO.””
Adrian’s phone slipped from his hand.
It hit the marble floor.
The screen cracked.
And Vanessa whispered something so quietly that I almost missed it.
“Adrian…”
He turned toward her.
She was already reaching for her purse.
She took one step toward the door.
Then stopped.
Because Ethan blocked her path.
And behind him stood two investigators holding a folder with her name printed across the front.
Vanessa looked at the folder.
Then at me.
For the first time since I had met her, she wasn’t smiling.
She whispered, “What did your father find?””
I looked at the investigators.
Then back at her.
“Enough.””
One of them opened the folder.
“Vanessa Vale?””
Her face went white.
“Yes?””
“We need you to come with us.””
Adrian stared at her.
“What is happening?””
The investigator looked at Adrian.
“You should probably ask your mistress what happened to the missing twelve million dollars.””
Vanessa’s mouth dropped open.
And Adrian turned toward her just as the investigator continued:
“Because the money was transferred the same night she first accessed your wife’s laptop.””
Vanessa looked at me.
I looked back.
Then my phone buzzed one final time.
Another message from Dad.
*This was only the first five minutes.*
May you like
And beneath it was a second message.
*The real problem is who Vanessa was working for.*
