Chapter 5

Victor Monroe had died in a boating accident off the coast of Croatia.
At least that was the official story.
No body had ever been recovered.
Dad had accepted the death because intelligence sources confirmed Victor's financial activity stopped days later.
Now he was alive.
And he had just helped his daughter escape federal custody.
Dad stared at the highway image.
“I should've known.”
“Known what?”
“He was too careful to die without leaving leverage.”
I sat across from him in the secure operations room.
Screens covered one wall.
Vehicle tracking.
Airport departures.
Border alerts.
Financial activity.
Vale Dominion analysts worked in silence.
“Why would Victor come back now?”
Dad looked at me.
“The ledger.”
Of course.
The black book.
If Charles documented every payoff, Victor's name would appear throughout it.
Maybe more than his name.
Maybe people Victor still worked with.
Dad issued orders.
Freeze known Monroe-linked assets.
Alert international partners.
Monitor private airfields.
Coordinate with federal authorities.
He moved with terrifying calm.
I watched.
For most of my childhood, Dad's power had been abstract.
Private planes.
Secure calls.
Men in suits who always seemed to know where doors led.
Nathan thought it was inheritance wealth.
He never understood the machinery behind it.
Now I did.
“Dad.”
He stopped.
“No private retaliation.”
His expression hardened.
“Vivian.”
“Promise me.”
“Victor helped destroy your mother.”
“And Celeste helped Nathan torture me.”
My voice shook.
“But if you become them to punish them, what did Mom die for?”
He closed his eyes.
Then nodded.
“Lawfully.”
“Lawfully.”
That was the deal.
Meanwhile, Nathan's world collapsed publicly.
Ashford Global's board suspended him.
Then removed him as chief executive.
Share prices dropped.
Several lenders froze credit.
Government contracts were placed under review.
Three senior executives resigned.
Reporters surrounded Blackthorn.
My name became headline material.
MYSTERY HEIRESS BEHIND ASHFORD RAID.
ELIAS VALE'S DAUGHTER MARRIED TO DISGRACED LOGISTICS TYCOON.
I hated every word.
They made it sound like revenge.
A rich family war.
Nobody understood the years of fear.
The bruises.
The hidden files.
The nights I slept beside Nathan wondering whether he knew I had copied another account.
I released one statement through Rebecca.
This is not a family feud. Evidence of violence and financial misconduct has been provided to appropriate authorities. I will not interfere with those investigations.
Nothing more.
Then Celeste made her move.
A video appeared online.
She sat in an unknown room wearing a white blouse.
Calm.
Elegant.
Completely unlike the frightened woman from Blackthorn.
“My name is Celeste Monroe.”
Lie.
“I have spent the last three years uncovering corruption involving Ashford Global and Vale Dominion.”
Dad laughed when he heard that.
Not because it was funny.
Because he was furious.
Celeste continued.
She claimed Nathan had coerced her.
Claimed I had used family influence to frame them both.
Then she said:
“Elias Vale would like the world to believe he is exposing corruption. In reality, he is protecting his own secrets.”
A document appeared beside her.
An old transfer record.
Vale Dominion.
Twenty-two years earlier.
A payment to a political consultancy.
My stomach tightened.
Dad stopped the video.
“What is that?”
He didn't answer immediately.
“Dad.”
“It was part of the effort to defend your mother's company.”
“Was it legal?”
“Yes.”
“Ethical?”
He looked at me.
“Not entirely.”
My heart sank.
“What did you do?”
“We hired investigators to obtain information on Charles Ashford's network.”
“How?”
“One contractor paid sources inside government offices.”
I stared.
“Bribes?”
“Information payments.”
“That sounds like a nicer word for bribes.”
“Yes.”
He didn't hide from it.
That mattered.
But it hurt.
“Did Mom know?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She was dying.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“I became obsessed.”
I had never heard Dad admit weakness like that.
“I wanted Charles destroyed. I wanted everyone who helped him ruined. I convinced myself anything was justified because Isabelle had been wronged.”
“What stopped you?”
“You.”
I stared.
“You were sixteen. You came into my office one night asking why everyone seemed afraid of me.”
I vaguely remembered.
Dad continued.
“You said Mom used to tell you that powerful people become dangerous when nobody tells them no.”
My eyes filled.
“I stopped.”
“Completely?”
“No.”
Honest.
Painfully.
“But I changed what Vale Dominion was becoming.”
That was the origin I had never known.
The empire Nathan feared had been born partly from grief.
Dad built Vale Dominion into a system designed to trace hidden money.
He had started with revenge.
Then turned it toward accountability.
Celeste had found the ugly beginning.
“She can hurt you with this.”
“Yes.”
“Will it destroy Vale?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I disclosed the old operation to regulators twelve years ago during our restructuring.”
I blinked.
“You already admitted it?”
“Yes.”
“Publicly?”
“To regulators and governing partners.”
Dad almost smiled.
“Secrets are easiest to weaponize when you keep pretending they don't exist.”
Nathan should have learned that.
So should I.
Dad released the entire historical disclosure before Celeste could drip pieces into the press.
Some commentators criticized him.
Others praised the transparency.
Either way, her leverage vanished.
She responded within hours.
Another video.
This time angry.
“You think disclosure makes you clean?”
Dad watched without blinking.
Then Celeste held up a black leather book.
The ledger.
My heart stopped.
“If anything happens to me or my father, copies go everywhere.”
Names flashed briefly on screen.
Bank executives.
Former ministers.
Corporate chairmen.
One name caught my eye.
Elias Vale.
I turned to Dad.
He frowned.
“I was never in Charles's ledger.”
“You're there.”
“Then Victor added me.”
Another name appeared.
Vivian Vale.
My blood ran cold.
I had been fourteen when Charles supposedly stopped writing in that ledger.
Why would my name be there?
Celeste smiled into the camera.
“Some inherit money.”
She held up the book.
“Others inherit debts.”
The video ended.
Dad immediately ordered forensic analysis.
Adrian called minutes later.
“She's altered it.”
“How do you know?”
“Dad's handwriting never looked like that.”
“What about my name?”
“It wasn't there.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Then Adrian hesitated.
“But there was a section with future leverage.”
“What does that mean?”
“People Charles planned to use someday.”
My stomach tightened.
“Was I one?”
“I don't know.”
Before he could say more, a security alert appeared.
One of Vale Dominion's European data centers was under cyberattack.
Then another.
Then the building lights flickered.
Dad stood.
“What happened?”
An analyst turned pale.
“Internal credentials.”
“Whose?”
The answer came seconds later.
Mine.
My credentials were being used to attack my father's company.
Celeste hadn't only stolen Nathan's archive.
May you like
Somewhere along the way, she had stolen access connected to me.
And now she was trying to turn father and daughter against each other.
