Surprise

Chapter 2

Rachel cut the umbilical cord because Derek was not there.

She cried harder than I did while the nurse guided her hand.

“I’m not good with medical things,” she said, even though she looked like she would fight the entire hospital if anyone touched Emily wrong.

The nurse smiled.

“You’re doing great, Aunt Rachel.”

Aunt Rachel.

The words made my chest ache.

For months, Derek had made me feel like I was alone inside my own pregnancy.

Now my sister stood beside me, hair messy, eyes red, hand trembling, and I realized my daughter had not been born without family.

She had been born into the right family.

The nurse placed Emily against my chest again.

Her tiny body curled into me.

Her dark hair was damp.

Her mouth opened in a little cry, then settled when I whispered her name.

“Hi, Emily.”

Rachel leaned close.

“She’s perfect.”

“She is.”

“Tiny dictator lungs.”

I laughed, and it turned into a sob.

The doctor checked me.

The nurses cleaned Emily.

Someone brought warm blankets.

For two hours, the room stayed soft.

Safe.

Almost unreal.

Then Rachel turned my phone back on.

It exploded.

Missed calls.

Texts.

Voicemails.

Derek.

Derek.

Derek.

Then my mother-in-law, Patricia.

Then Derek again.

Rachel held the phone away like it might bite her.

“Want me to read them?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She read them anyway, but silently.

Her face changed.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“He’s saying you stole his car.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“His car.”

“I left in your car.”

“I know.”

“He’s also saying you took cash from the emergency fund.”

I looked down at Emily.

“I took the fifteen dollars he threw at me.”

Rachel’s face went hard.

“There’s more.”

She turned the phone toward me.

Derek’s message filled the screen.

Where the hell are you? Riverside says you never arrived. If you’re trying to punish me, I’ll make sure everyone knows you endangered my child.

My child.

Not our child.

Not you.

Not are you safe?

My child.

My stomach twisted.

Another message came in.

I already called the police.

Rachel swore.

I held Emily tighter.

“He called the police?”

“He wants a record,” Rachel said. “He’s building a story.”

I knew she was right.

Derek loved records.

Receipts.

Timelines.

Screenshots without context.

He had been building a story about me for months.

Sarah is emotional.

Sarah forgets things.

Sarah is unstable.

Sarah overreacts.

Now he would add runaway wife.

Dangerous mother.

Kidnapped newborn.

Panic surged through me.

“Can he take her?”

Rachel grabbed my hand.

“No.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know he threw taxi money at a woman in labor.”

“There were no witnesses.”

Rachel’s eyes sharpened.

“There is evidence.”

“What evidence?”

She reached into my hospital bag and pulled out the folder I had packed three weeks ago.

Bank records.

Screenshots.

Copies of emails.

Medical appointment notes showing missed visits.

A photo of the fifteen dollars on the counter beside my ring.

I had taken it before I walked out.

I barely remembered doing it.

Rachel smiled through tears.

“Good girl.”

“I don’t feel good.”

“You were thinking while in labor. That counts.”

A social worker came in after Derek’s police call reached the hospital.

Her name was Angela.

She spoke gently but directly.

“Your husband reported concern that you disappeared while in labor.”

I almost laughed.

“He refused to drive me to the hospital.”

Angela did not look shocked.

That told me she had heard worse.

“Do you feel safe returning home?”

“No.”

The answer came faster than fear.

Rachel nodded.

“Absolutely not.”

Angela sat down.

“Then let’s document that.”

For the next hour, I told the truth.

The financial control.

The isolation.

The insults.

The missed appointments.

The cash.

The house in his name.

The car in his name.

The way he made me ask for money for prenatal vitamins.

The way he told me no court would give a baby to a woman with no assets.

Angela wrote everything.

Then she looked at my wrist.

“What happened there?”

I had not even noticed the bruise.

Old.

Yellowing.

Derek had grabbed me last week when I said I wanted Rachel in the delivery room.

I covered it instinctively.

Rachel saw.

Her eyes filled with rage.

“Sarah.”

Angela waited.

I dropped my hand.

“He grabbed me.”

“Has that happened before?”

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to keep one piece of the story smaller.

Then Emily made a soft sound against my chest.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Angela nodded.

“We can help you file for a protective order.”

The words scared me.

But not as much as going back.

Derek called again.

Rachel declined it.

Then a voicemail appeared.

Angela asked if I would play it.

I did.

Derek’s voice filled the hospital room.

“You need to come home right now. My mother is here, and she says if you keep acting crazy, we’ll have no choice but to get emergency custody. I tried to be patient, Sarah. You’re proving everything I told them.”

The room went silent.

Angela’s expression changed.

“Who is them?”

I looked at Rachel.

Rachel looked at me.

“I don’t know,” I said.

But I did know one thing.

Derek had not started building his case tonight.

May you like

He had already told someone.

Someone who was waiting.
