Chapter 2

"Mom, sit down."
Daniel's voice was sharp enough to silence the entire table.
Patricia remained standing.
Her expensive diamond bracelet caught the chandelier light as she gripped the back of her chair.
"Nia is trying to humiliate this family," she declared.
I looked at her.
"No, Patricia. I'm trying to stop this family from humiliating me."
Daniel reached for the black folder.
I watched his fingers tighten around it.
"What's in here?"
"Open it."
He hesitated.
For the first time that evening, my husband looked genuinely afraid.
Then he broke the seal.
Inside were copies of a business registration, several financial transfers, and documents bearing my name.
His expression changed before he reached the second page.
"Where did you get these?"
I leaned forward.
"That's your first question?"
"Nia."
"Not why my signature appears on loan documents I never signed?"
The room went silent.
Vanessa leaned toward her brother.
"What loan documents?"
Daniel slammed the folder shut.
"Nobody needs to discuss this."
I opened my handbag and removed another copy.
"Actually, everyone should understand why I've stopped paying for things."
Marcus frowned.
"What's going on?"
I looked at Daniel.
"Would you like to explain, or should I?"
He stared at me.
"You're not doing this."
I turned toward his family.
"Three months ago, I received a letter from a lender about a business loan worth two hundred and forty thousand dollars."
Patricia slowly lowered herself into her chair.
"I didn't recognize the company. I didn't recognize the account number. And I certainly didn't recognize the signature."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
I continued.
"The business was called Bennett Family Investments."
Vanessa looked confused.
"Daniel, you started a company?"
He didn't answer.
Marcus leaned forward.
"Without telling us?"
I almost laughed.
They were shocked because Daniel hadn't shared his supposed success.
I was shocked because he had tried to make me responsible for financing it.
"The company was registered eighteen months ago," I said. "Daniel is listed as its managing member."
Patricia stared at the table.
"And my name," I continued, "appears on a personal guarantee."
Daniel finally spoke.
"It was supposed to be temporary."
I turned toward him.
"What was temporary?"
"The loan."
"Did you sign my name?"
He looked away.
I felt something inside me harden.
"Daniel, did you forge my signature?"
His silence answered before his words did.
"I was going to tell you."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus pushed his chair back.
"Are you serious?"
Daniel looked at his brother.
"Stay out of it."
I shook my head.
"No. You brought everyone into our finances for years. Tonight, they can hear the truth."
Patricia stood again.
"Nia, enough."
I looked directly at her.
"Why are you so desperate to stop him from opening these documents?"
She glared at me.
"Because marriage problems belong between husband and wife."
"Then why did you accept money from a company using my identity?"
Her face went white.
Daniel suddenly grabbed my wrist beneath the table.
"Stop talking."
I pulled away immediately.
"Don't touch me."
Several relatives stared.
The waiter, who had remained near the door, looked concerned.
Daniel released me.
I stood.
"That's exactly why I wanted this meeting in a public place."
Daniel's expression changed.
"You planned this?"
"Yes."
He looked around the room.
"You set me up."
I stared at him.
"No, Daniel. You set yourself up when you signed my name on financial documents."
I took my own check folder and placed my card beside it.
"My meal is paid for."
The waiter nodded.
"Thank you, ma'am."
I turned toward Daniel.
"The account connected to your supplemental card was closed this morning. My attorney has already contacted the lender."
Daniel's face drained.
"You called a lawyer?"
"Three weeks ago."
Patricia gasped.
"Three weeks? And you've been acting normal?"
I looked at her.
"Would you have preferred I warned you before I protected myself?"
She had no answer.
I collected my handbag.
Daniel stood abruptly.
"You're not leaving until we talk."
I looked at him.
"We've had six years to talk."
His eyes filled with anger.
"You don't get to destroy our marriage over paperwork."
The words hurt more than I expected.
Paperwork.
That was what he called a forged signature.
That was what he called a loan that could damage my credit and threaten everything I had earned.
I forced myself to speak calmly.
"Our marriage wasn't destroyed by paperwork. It was destroyed by dishonesty."
I walked toward the door.
Behind me, Vanessa called my name.
"Nia, wait."
I stopped.
She approached slowly.
Her eyes were wet.
"I didn't know about the loan."
I studied her face.
For years, Vanessa had treated me like her personal emergency fund.
She called whenever her rent was late.
Whenever her car needed repairs.
Whenever she wanted money for a vacation she couldn't afford.
I had often helped.
But tonight, she looked frightened rather than entitled.
"Then ask your brother," I said.
She swallowed.
"Mom said Daniel was investing in property."
I looked toward Patricia.
She was standing beside Daniel, whispering urgently.
"What property?"
Vanessa shook her head.
"I don't know."
I reached for the door.
Then Vanessa caught my attention with one final sentence.
"Last month, Mom told me Daniel was buying a house."
My stomach tightened.
"A house?"
She nodded.
"She said it was supposed to be a surprise."
I stared at her.
"Where?"
"Sandy Springs."
My pulse quickened.
Daniel and I already owned a home in Atlanta.
We had discussed moving someday, but we had never chosen a new property.
I looked back toward the table.
Daniel was staring directly at me.
And in his expression, I saw recognition.
He knew I had learned something new.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Nia, there's something else."
I looked at her.
May you like
She hesitated.
"Mom said the house wasn't for you."
