Chapter 8

Arthur did not go to the house this time.
He wanted to.
I saw it in his face.
The old instinct.
Run toward danger.
Meet betrayal with fury.
But Samuel was asleep in the hospital bassinet.
I was still weak.
Eleanor was free.
Daniel was cornered.
And someone had gotten inside our nursery.
Arthur looked at the photo, then at me.
“I’m staying.”
Relief hit so hard I almost cried again.
Agent Price sent tactical officers to the estate.
Detective Martinez locked down the hospital floor.
Camille moved Samuel’s bassinet away from the door.
Arthur stood between us and the hallway.
Every mother in the maternity ward was quietly relocated to a secure wing.
That was when I understood the size of Daniel’s cruelty.
He had made every newborn on that floor feel less safe.
At the estate, officers found no Eleanor.
No Daniel.
No intruder.
Only a phone taped beneath the nursery rocking chair, set to send the photo on delay.
A trick.
A lure.
Arthur’s jaw tightened when Price told him.
“She wanted me away from Hannah.”
“Yes,” Price said.
“Then she’s coming here.”
He was right.
At midnight, the hospital fire alarm sounded.
Red lights flashed.
Doors opened.
Nurses moved fast.
Detective Martinez shouted for everyone to stay calm.
Camille grabbed Samuel.
I tried to stand and nearly collapsed.
Arthur caught me.
“Easy.”
“Take him.”
“He’s with Camille.”
Smoke curled faintly under the door.
Not thick.
Not real fire.
A distraction.
My heart pounded.
From the hallway came shouting.
Then a woman’s voice.
Eleanor.
“Arthur!”
His whole body went still.
Detective Martinez moved to the door.
Arthur stopped her.
“She wants a scene.”
Eleanor’s voice rose.
“Arthur, I need to see my grandson!”
Grandson.
After everything, she still said it like ownership.
Samuel began to cry in Camille’s arms.
The sound pulled something primal from me.
I stood despite the pain.
Arthur turned.
“Hannah—”
“No.”
I took Samuel from Camille and held him against my chest.
The door opened slightly.
Detective Martinez stood in the gap, weapon low but ready.
Eleanor was in the hallway wearing a stolen nurse’s coat over expensive clothes.
Her hair was wild.
Her eyes locked on Samuel.
“Oh,” she whispered. “He looks like Arthur.”
I stepped back.
Arthur moved in front of me.
“Mom, get on the floor.”
Her face crumpled.
“You would point police at your mother?”
“You threatened my son.”
“I protected this family.”
“You tied my wife to a porch.”
“She was going to ruin everything.”
“She gave birth to my child.”
Eleanor pointed at Samuel.
“That baby should have secured the Whitmores, but you let her turn him against us before he can even speak.”
I stared at her.
“You don’t love him.”
Her eyes snapped to me.
“You know nothing.”
“I know love does not need custody papers.”
She lunged.
Not far.
Not well.
Desperation, not strength.
Detective Martinez caught her before she crossed the threshold.
Eleanor screamed as officers forced her down.
“Daniel promised me!” she cried. “He promised we would keep control!”
Arthur froze.
Price stepped into the hallway.
“Where is Daniel?”
Eleanor sobbed, fighting the cuffs.
“He’s going to fix what Rebecca ruined.”
The hallway went silent.
Grace.
Daniel’s daughter.
Price’s face changed.
He was already dialing.
Arthur looked at me.
“Grace.”
My stomach dropped.
Daniel was not coming for Samuel first.
He was going after the first child he failed to erase.
Grace had been placed under federal watch in Austin.
But Daniel still knew systems.
Doctors.
Courts.
Private security.
Old favors.
Agent Price rushed down the hall, shouting into his phone.
I held Samuel tighter.
Arthur stayed beside us, torn apart by the need to be in two places.
“Go,” I said.
“No.”
“Grace is fifteen.”
“You just gave birth.”
“And I am surrounded by police. Grace may not be.”
His face twisted.
“I promised not to leave you.”
“You’re not leaving me. You’re protecting another child from the same monster.”
He pressed his forehead to mine.
“I’ll come back.”
“You better.”
He kissed Samuel’s tiny head.
Then mine.
Then he ran.
Grace’s adoptive family lived in a quiet neighborhood outside Austin.
Daniel arrived there with forged paperwork claiming Grace was required for emergency questioning in a federal trust case.
He had two men with him.
Private security.
Fake badges.
But Grace was not naive.
She had spent forty-eight hours learning exactly what kind of man shared her blood.
When Daniel came to the door, she did not open it.
She pressed record on her phone.
Then called Agent Price.
Daniel tried charm first.
“Grace, sweetheart, I’m your father.”
She spoke through the door.
“My father is standing behind me with a baseball bat.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.”
“I understand you sold me.”
Silence.
Then Daniel said, “Your mother was paid.”
Grace’s breath caught.
Her adoptive mother cried out behind her.
Daniel continued.
“Rebecca didn’t want you. She took the money and vanished.”
Grace’s voice shook.
“You’re lying.”
“Open the door and I’ll show you proof.”
One of his men moved toward the back entrance.
Federal agents grabbed him from the bushes.
Arthur arrived with Price two minutes later.
Daniel was still on the porch, shouting through the door.
“Everything I did was to protect what belongs to me!”
Arthur stepped out of the car.
“Nothing belongs to you anymore.”
Daniel turned.
For the first time, he looked truly afraid.
Not because of Arthur.
Because of the agents behind him.
Grace opened the door just enough to see.
Daniel looked at her.
His face softened in a way that almost seemed real.
“Lily.”
She flinched at the birth name.
Arthur stepped closer.
“Don’t.”
Daniel ignored him.
“I held you once.”
Grace’s eyes filled despite herself.
Daniel whispered, “You were so small.”
For one terrible second, everyone froze.
Then Grace lifted her phone.
“And you sold me anyway.”
Daniel’s face changed.
The softness vanished.
He lunged toward her.
Arthur hit him before agents reached him.
One hard punch sent Daniel backward off the porch and onto the grass.
Agents swarmed him.
Grace did not move.
Arthur stood between her and Daniel, breathing hard.
Daniel spat blood and laughed.
“You still don’t know where Rebecca is.”
Arthur went still.
Grace’s phone trembled.
May you like
Daniel smiled through blood.
“Ask Mom what she buried under the rose garden.”
