Surprise

Chapter 6

The statement changed everything.

By morning, my face was everywhere.

Some headlines called me brave.

Some called me bitter.

One gossip site used a photo from my wedding and asked if I had planned the downfall of the Vance family from the beginning.

Julian’s team pushed that story hard.

They painted me as a cold, calculating wife.

A woman who smiled at family dinners while copying files.

A traitor.

I read the first few articles until my hands shook.

Then Ruth took my phone.

“No more poison for breakfast.”

“I need to know what they’re saying.”

“No. You need to keep your blood pressure down.”

Dad slid a plate of toast toward me.

“She’s right.”

Mia poured orange juice.

“Eat before Ruth starts billing us by the glare.”

Ruth did not smile, but her eyes softened.

“They’re trying to provoke you. Don’t help them.”

But Julian knew exactly where to press.

At noon, his interview aired.

He sat in a dark suit, looking pale and wounded.

My husband had always been beautiful when he lied.

“My wife has struggled emotionally during pregnancy,” he said. “I love her. I want her to get help. My family is devastated by these false accusations.”

I stared at the screen.

Then the interviewer asked about Chloe.

Julian lowered his eyes.

“That was a private matter handled poorly. I regret causing pain.”

Mia threw a pillow at the television.

“Handled poorly? He brought her to your baby shower!”

Dad turned the TV off.

But the damage was done.

My phone buzzed.

Message after message.

Some from strangers.

Some from people who had once eaten at my table.

You should forgive him.

Pregnancy makes women unstable.

You destroyed a good family.

Then one message appeared from Chloe.

Can we talk?

I stared at it for a long time.

Mia leaned over.

“Absolutely not.”

Dad said, “No.”

Ruth said, “Only through counsel.”

But something tugged at me.

Not sympathy.

Instinct.

Chloe had been inside their circle.

She knew things.

I handed the phone to Ruth.

“Ask what she wants.”

Ruth called from her own phone on speaker.

“This is Ruth Bell, Claire Bennett’s attorney. You requested contact.”

Chloe’s voice trembled.

“I need to tell her something.”

“You can tell me.”

“No. I need her to hear it. Please.”

Ruth looked at me.

I nodded.

Ruth sighed.

“You have two minutes.”

Chloe began crying.

“Elise came to see me this morning.”

My skin prickled.

“She told me Julian was going to claim Claire is mentally unstable and ask for emergency rights when the baby is born.”

My heart stopped.

Ruth’s eyes sharpened.

“Did she say how?”

“She said they have a doctor. Someone who will testify Claire is dangerous.”

Mia whispered, “Oh my God.”

Chloe rushed on.

“She also told me not to worry because once Claire’s baby is out of the way, my son will still be the heir.”

Silence filled the kitchen.

Out of the way.

The words moved through me like ice water.

Dad stood.

“Where are you?”

Chloe hesitated.

“A hotel.”

“Which one?” Ruth asked.

“I’m scared.”

Ruth’s voice softened by one degree.

“Then tell us where you are before they find you first.”

Chloe gave the name.

Agent Harris was contacted immediately.

Within an hour, Chloe was brought to a secure office for formal questioning.

I didn’t see her.

I didn’t want to.

But her statement gave Ruth exactly what she needed.

By evening, we had filed for an emergency protective order before Julian could make his move.

The judge granted a temporary order.

Julian was barred from contacting me or coming near my father’s property.

Elise too.

When Ruth read the order aloud, I felt my lungs open.

Only a little.

But enough.

That night, I stood in the nursery Dad had started setting up.

He had moved boxes from the attic.

My old crib, refinished.

Mom’s rocking chair.

A tiny mobile with clouds and stars.

I touched the crib rail.

“I don’t even have a name yet,” I whispered.

Dad stood in the doorway.

“Your mother liked Lily.”

I turned.

“She did?”

“She once said if you ever had a daughter, she hoped you’d name her something that could grow anywhere.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“Lily Bennett.”

Dad smiled.

“That’s a strong name.”

My hand rested on my belly.

“Lily.”

The baby shifted.

A soft roll beneath my palm.

For one peaceful moment, I imagined bringing her home.

No shouting.

No clapping.

No Vance name hanging over her.

Just this room.

This house.

This family.

Then the doorbell rang.

All peace vanished.

Dad moved fast.

Mia grabbed the baseball bat again.

The agents outside shouted.

A woman’s voice screamed from the porch.

“Claire! Open this door!”

Elise.

I froze in the nursery.

She screamed again.

“You stole my grandchild!”

Dad told me to stay upstairs.

I didn’t.

I walked down slowly, one hand on the railing.

Through the front window, I saw Elise being held back by two agents.

Her hair was loose.

Her face wild.

She saw me and pointed.

“You think paper keeps me away? That baby is Vance blood!”

I opened the door before Dad could stop me.

“Elise.”

Everyone went still.

I stood behind the screen door.

“My daughter is not your redemption. She is not your heir. She is not your property.”

Elise’s lips curled.

“You’ll regret this.”

“No,” I said. “I regret staying as long as I did.”

Agent Harris stepped from the driveway.

“Elise Vance, you are in violation of a protective order.”

Elise’s face changed.

“What?”

“You were served thirty-seven minutes ago.”

The agents turned her around.

For the second time in two days, I watched a Vance get handcuffed.

Elise screamed my name as they led her away.

May you like

But this time, I didn’t shake.

This time, I closed the door.
