Chapter 4

The trust changed everything.
Not because of the money.
Because of who knew.
My father had created it six months before he died.
Five million dollars.
Locked until Lily turned twenty-five.
Trustee listed as Richard Blackwood first.
After his death, control passed to the family foundation board.
And Victoria sat on that board.
I stared at the paperwork in my lawyer’s office the next morning.
Grace sat beside me, her arm in a sling.
Lily sat on the floor with colored pencils, drawing purple circles on legal paper Marcus said was not important.
My mother stood by the window.
She had not slept.
Neither had I.
Marcus Reed, our attorney, tapped the trust document.
“Victoria had access to quarterly trust summaries through the foundation.”
Grace whispered, “She knew Lily existed.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Marcus.
“How long?”
“At least eighteen months.”
The room tilted.
Eighteen months.
Victoria had smiled at me.
Kissed me.
Planned a wedding.
All while knowing I had a daughter.
My daughter.
“And she never told me.”
Marcus shook his head.
“She may have had a financial reason not to.”
My mother turned.
“What does that mean?”
“If Nathan married Victoria before paternity was legally established, Victoria could argue future marital asset planning, foundation influence, and reputational harm if Grace surfaced later. More importantly, if Grace was discredited before the DNA test, Victoria could pressure the board to freeze the trust.”
Grace went pale.
“She wanted Lily’s money?”
Marcus looked grim.
“Possibly.”
Lily looked up from the floor.
“Mommy, why is everybody sad?”
Grace tried to smile.
“Grown-up papers, baby.”
Lily held up a drawing.
“I made Daddy tall.”
I looked.
It was a stick figure with long arms, holding two smaller figures.
I had to turn away.
My mother crouched beside Lily.
“That’s beautiful.”
Lily smiled.
“Can Daddy keep it?”
My throat closed.
“Yes,” I said. “Daddy can keep it.”
Grace’s eyes filled when I said the word.
I saw it.
So did she.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it was from Victoria’s mother.
You are making a terrible mistake. Victoria is willing to forgive you if you end this maid’s scam quietly.
I laughed once.
It sounded ugly.
My mother held out her hand.
I gave her the phone.
She read the message.
Then typed back herself.
Contact my son again and our attorneys will respond.
She handed it back.
“Enough gentleness.”
Marcus nodded.
“We need a DNA test, emergency protective order, assault charges, and a petition to remove the foundation board from Lily’s trust control.”
Grace flinched.
“Will Lily have to go to court?”
“No,” Marcus said. “Not if we can help it.”
I looked at Grace.
“I’ll do whatever protects her.”
Grace watched me carefully.
“Even if the test says…”
I stopped.
She looked terrified.
Not that Lily wasn’t mine.
That I might use uncertainty as a door to escape.
I knelt beside her chair.
“Grace, I don’t need a test to know she needs protecting.”
Her lips trembled.
“But if she’s yours?”
“Then I will spend the rest of my life making up for the years stolen from us.”
“And if she isn’t?”
I looked at Lily drawing on the floor.
“She called me Daddy while she was scared. I answered. I don’t take that back.”
Grace broke then.
Quietly.
Her good hand covered her face.
Lily rushed over.
“Mommy?”
Grace pulled her close.
“I’m okay.”
Lily looked at me.
“Is Mommy’s shoulder hurting?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“Because Vicky was bad?”
My heart clenched.
“Yes.”
Lily frowned.
“Vicky said Mommy was bad.”
Grace closed her eyes.
I moved closer.
“When?”
Lily twisted her fingers in Grace’s sleeve.
“When Mommy cried in laundry room. Vicky said if Mommy told you, you would send us away.”
Grace whispered, “Lily.”
Lily kept going.
“She said Daddy doesn’t want little girls who make messes.”
My chest felt like it split.
I sat on the floor in front of her.
“Lily, look at me.”
She did.
Those eyes.
Mine.
Grace’s.
A life I had missed.
“That was a lie.”
Her lower lip trembled.
“You like me?”
I almost couldn’t speak.
“I love you.”
The room went silent.
Grace stared at me.
My mother started crying by the window.
Lily touched my face with her tiny hand.
“You just met me.”
I smiled through tears.
“I think my heart knew before I did.”
She considered that.
Then she climbed into my lap.
No hesitation.
No fear.
Just trust offered like a gift I did not deserve.
Marcus cleared his throat gently.
“I’ll file everything today.”
My mother wiped her face.
“And I’ll call the foundation.”
I held Lily with one arm and reached for Grace with the other.
She hesitated.
Then took my hand.
For the first time, the three of us were connected in the same room.
Not hidden.
Not threatened.
Not erased.
Then Marcus’s assistant knocked and stepped in, pale.
“Mr. Reed, you need to see this.”
She placed a tablet on the desk.
A headline was already live.
BLACKWOOD HEIR SEDUCED BY MAID IN PATERNITY SCAM DAYS BEFORE WEDDING.
Under it was a photo of Grace.
May you like
And Lily.
Taken through the hospital window.
