Chapter 5

I met Adrian Cole the next morning.
He was thirty-eight, a financial consultant with tired eyes and the guarded expression of someone who had learned not to trust easily.
We sat in a quiet restaurant outside Atlanta.
Jordan came with me.
Adrian ordered coffee but barely touched it.
"I saw the video," he said.
I looked down.
"Of the fountain?"
He nodded.
"I'm sorry about your mother."
"Thank you."
He studied me.
"Does Vanessa still have access to your finances?"
"We've restricted it."
"Good."
I leaned forward.
"Tell me what happened."
Adrian took a slow breath.
He explained that he'd met Vanessa at a charity fundraiser five years earlier.
She was charming.
Attentive.
Beautiful.
She seemed fascinated by his work.
Within months, they were dating seriously.
Then Patricia became involved.
Vanessa's mother treated Adrian like family.
She praised his intelligence and spoke constantly about building generational wealth.
Eventually, they proposed investing in a luxury property development.
Adrian contributed money.
Vanessa helped coordinate the paperwork.
Patricia managed a holding company.
At first, everything looked legitimate.
Then the numbers stopped matching.
Payments disappeared.
Invoices appeared for services Adrian couldn't verify.
And when he questioned Vanessa, she accused him of not trusting her.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Those were the exact words she'd used with me.
Adrian continued.
"She'd cry. Then she'd tell me I was controlling."
I looked away.
"She did that to me too."
He nodded sadly.
"When I finally demanded an audit, she threatened to ruin my reputation."
"What happened?"
"I hired attorneys. We reached a settlement."
He stared into his coffee.
"I recovered some money, but I lost years of my life."
I was silent.
Then I asked the question I'd been afraid to ask.
"Did she humiliate your family too?"
His face changed.
"My father."
I leaned forward.
"What happened?"
"At our engagement party, she accused him of stealing a watch."
I felt cold.
"Did he?"
"Of course not."
Adrian looked angry.
"The watch turned up in Vanessa's handbag later."
I stared at him.
"She planted it?"
"I believe she did."
He explained that Vanessa had demanded he cut contact with his father.
She claimed his family was dishonest and unsophisticated.
She said he needed to prove his loyalty.
When Adrian refused, the relationship deteriorated.
Then he discovered the missing money.
I sat back.
The pattern was unmistakable.
Vanessa targeted successful men.
She created conflict with their families.
She tried to isolate them.
Then she gained access to their assets.
I felt humiliated.
Not because she'd fooled me.
But because I'd almost allowed her to destroy my relationship with my mother.
Adrian leaned forward.
"Nick, I know what you're thinking."
I looked at him.
"You feel stupid."
I didn't answer.
He shook his head.
"People like Vanessa are good at finding what you want to believe."
I swallowed.
"I wanted a family."
He nodded.
"She knew that."
I thought about my father.
He died when I was fourteen.
My mother never remarried.
I'd grown up watching her work herself to exhaustion.
I wanted to build something beautiful.
A successful business.
A loving marriage.
Children.
A home where my mother could visit and feel proud of the life she'd helped me create.
Vanessa had stepped into that dream.
And she'd used it against me.
Adrian reached into his briefcase.
"I brought something."
He handed Olivia a copy of a document from his old case.
It identified V Holdings Group as a company connected to Patricia.
I stared at the page.
"The same company."
Adrian nodded.
"They've used similar names before."
Olivia examined the document.
"This could help us identify related entities and transactions."
Then Adrian showed us emails describing payments made through multiple consulting companies.
Some had business addresses that matched those appearing in my accounts.
I looked at him.
"Why didn't you warn anyone?"
His face tightened.
"I tried."
He explained that after the settlement, he'd posted a warning about financial fraud.
Vanessa threatened legal action.
His attorney advised him to avoid making public accusations he couldn't fully substantiate.
So he moved on.
Until Jordan contacted him.
"I couldn't watch her do it again," Adrian said.
I thanked him.
Then I asked whether he would cooperate with investigators.
He nodded.
"Absolutely."
By the end of the week, Olivia had assembled a substantial file.
Bank transfers.
Property applications.
Company records.
Messages.
Video footage.
Adrian's supporting documents.
But one important question remained.
Where was the money?
David traced the largest transfer through V Holdings Group.
Part of it had moved into another account.
Another portion had been used to purchase high-value goods.
The remaining funds were difficult to locate.
We requested assistance from the bank and appropriate investigators.
Then Olivia received an unexpected call.
It came from Brianna, Vanessa's closest friend.
She sounded frightened.
"I need to speak to someone."
Olivia arranged a meeting.
Brianna arrived wearing sunglasses and a plain black sweater.
She looked nothing like the confident woman I'd seen laughing at the engagement party.
When she sat down, her hands trembled.
"I didn't know she'd push your mother," she said immediately.
I stared at her.
"But you knew she planned a confrontation."
Brianna nodded.
"She said she wanted Martha to leave."
"Why?"
"Because Vanessa wanted you to prove you'd choose her."
I took a slow breath.
"And if I did?"
Brianna looked down.
"She planned to ask you to sign more documents that night."
My stomach tightened.
"What documents?"
"A financial authorization."
Olivia leaned forward.
"Do you have evidence?"
Brianna nodded.
She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
Inside were printed messages between her and Vanessa.
One message made my blood run cold.
If Nick defends me against his mother, he'll sign anything.
I stared at it.
Brianna began crying.
"Vanessa told me it was just a relationship test."
I looked at her.
"You watched her push an elderly woman into water."
She covered her face.
"I know."
"Why didn't you help?"
"I froze."
For several moments, no one spoke.
Then Brianna whispered, "There's more."
Olivia looked at her.
"What?"
Brianna hesitated.
"Patricia has been telling people that Martha is dangerous."
I felt my chest tighten.
"Why?"
"Because they want her to look unstable."
I looked at Olivia.
She seemed equally concerned.
Brianna continued.
"They think if they can make your mother look aggressive, they can claim Vanessa acted in self-defense."
I stared at her.
"That's ridiculous. We have video."
Brianna nodded.
"I told them that."
"Then why are they still trying?"
She swallowed.
"Because Patricia says the video isn't the biggest problem."
My pulse quickened.
"What is?"
Brianna looked directly at me.
"She says they already have enough money to leave the country."
I sat frozen.
Then my phone rang.
It was David.
His voice was urgent.
"Nick, we just received an alert."
"What happened?"
"Someone tried to transfer another half-million dollars from your company."
My blood turned cold.
"Did it go through?"
"No. The restrictions blocked it."
I closed my eyes.
May you like
Then David said something even worse.
"The attempted transfer came from a device registered to someone inside your own office."
