Surprise

Chapter 14

Julian tried to reach for the bassinet.

Mara moved first.

She stepped between him and Nicholas with one hand raised.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

His face twisted.

“That is my son.”

I looked up at him from the wheelchair.

“No. He is my son. Biology gives you a question. Behavior gives you a place.”

His eyes reddened.

“Elena, I didn’t know.”

“You didn’t ask.”

“I thought—”

“You thought what Chloe handed you. You thought what your mother allowed. You thought what made it easy to throw me away.”

Chloe snapped, “Oh, please. Stop acting like some innocent saint.”

Every head turned toward her.

She had lost the soft voice now.

Lost the perfect bride.

Underneath was the woman I had always seen in flashes.

Sharp.

Hungry.

Mean.

“You lived in his house,” she said. “Spent his money. Used his name. You were quiet because you had nothing else.”

Julian looked at her like he did not recognize her.

I almost laughed.

He had married the mask.

Not the woman.

Rebecca leaned close to me.

“Security is moving.”

Near the side doors, two Sterling security guards were speaking into earpieces.

Beatrice had recovered enough to point at me.

“Remove her.”

The guards stepped forward.

Then stopped.

Because two uniformed officers entered the ballroom.

Behind them walked a woman in a navy coat.

Detective Laura Finch.

Rebecca had not told me she was coming.

Mara whispered, “Surprise.”

Detective Finch approached the stage.

“Chloe Mercer Sterling?”

Chloe stiffened.

“That is me.”

“We have a warrant for electronic devices connected to an ongoing investigation involving falsified medical records, financial fraud, and identity misuse.”

Chloe looked at Julian.

“Say something.”

Julian did not move.

Detective Finch turned to Beatrice.

“Mrs. Beatrice Sterling, we also have a warrant for your phone and office records.”

Beatrice stood too quickly.

“This is outrageous. Do you know who I am?”

“Yes,” Detective Finch said. “That is why I came personally.”

A few people gasped.

Others started recording.

Chloe’s bridesmaids backed away from her as if fraud were contagious.

Julian stood frozen near me, the paternity report trembling in his hand.

I saw the exact moment his pride lost to panic.

“Elena,” he whispered. “Please. We need to talk.”

“We did talk. For years. You just never listened.”

Nicholas stirred.

A tiny cry came from the bassinet.

The whole ballroom seemed to hear it.

Julian’s face collapsed.

For one second, he was not the man who humiliated me.

He was a man seeing the child he had nearly erased.

He stepped closer.

Mara tensed.

I lifted one hand.

Not permission.

Control.

Julian stopped an arm’s length away.

Nicholas cried again.

Small.

Angry.

Alive.

Julian whispered, “What is his name?”

“Nicholas.”

His eyes filled.

“Nicholas Sterling?”

“Nicholas Vale.”

Pain crossed his face.

Good, I thought.

Then hated myself for the satisfaction.

Chloe saw it too.

Her expression turned venomous.

“You named him after your nobody mother?”

Mara lunged forward, but Rebecca caught her arm.

I did not move.

I only looked at Julian.

“Do you hear her now?”

He turned slowly toward Chloe.

She realized she had gone too far.

“Julian, I didn’t mean—”

“You did.”

Chloe’s face hardened.

“You were falling apart before I came along. Your company was leaking money. Your marriage was dead. Your mother begged me to help manage Elena because she was becoming a liability.”

Beatrice hissed, “Chloe.”

“No,” Chloe said. “You don’t get to put this all on me.”

The ballroom froze again.

Chloe pointed at Beatrice.

“She wanted Elena gone. She said if Elena ever had a child, the trust would split and the Mercer deal would collapse. She told me to make sure there was no child.”

My blood turned cold.

No child.

The words echoed inside me.

Julian took one step back.

“What does that mean?”

Chloe’s mouth shut.

Too late.

Detective Finch looked at her sharply.

“What did you mean by that?”

Chloe swallowed.

“I meant legally.”

Rebecca’s face had gone pale.

I remembered the vitamins Chloe insisted I take.

The herbal teas.

The “stress supplements.”

The miscarriage scare Julian had ignored.

My hand went to my stomach.

Mara whispered, “Elena?”

I could barely speak.

“She gave me pills.”

Julian stared at me.

“What pills?”

“After the gala. She said they were calming supplements. I bled that night.”

His face went gray.

Chloe shook her head.

“No. No, she’s twisting it.”

Detective Finch stepped closer.

“Mrs. Sterling, do not leave this room.”

Chloe laughed.

A wild sound.

“You can’t prove anything.”

Adrian’s voice came from the stage.

“Yes, we can.”

He held up Chloe’s smartwatch.

She looked at her wrist.

Empty.

Her face changed.

Adrian had taken it when he unplugged the microphone.

“Backup messages sync automatically,” he said. “You should really know that, being in PR.”

Rebecca almost smiled.

Detective Finch took the watch.

Chloe screamed his name.

Julian did not defend her.

Beatrice did not defend her.

The room that had gathered to crown her watched her become evidence.

I closed my eyes.

My body ached.

My son cried.

My past burned behind me.

Then Mara bent down and whispered, “We need to get you back to the hospital.”

I nodded.

As the officers led Chloe toward a private room, Julian reached for me one last time.

“Elena, please.”

I looked at his hand.

Then at his face.

“No.”

May you like

And this time, when I left a Sterling ballroom, I was not being removed.

I was walking out with the truth.
