Surprise

Chapter 8

For a moment, I couldn't understand what Brianna had said.

“Thomas was at your house?”

She nodded.

“Last week. My father told everyone he was meeting a business associate, but I recognized Thomas from a photograph in his office.”

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Why would Thomas meet Richard?”

“I don't know. I only heard part of the conversation.”

She looked frightened.

“They argued about a recording. My father said Thomas had no right to keep it. Thomas said he had kept quiet long enough.”

That sounded like the man who had called me.

But it raised another question.

Why had Thomas gone to Richard's house after telling us he was hiding?

I called Angela.

She listened carefully, then asked Brianna to repeat everything she remembered.

We didn't accuse Thomas of anything. We simply added the information to the investigation.

That evening, he contacted Angela directly.

He explained that he had gone to Richard's house to obtain a document proving the recording's authenticity. Richard had claimed the conversation was fabricated and threatened to sue anyone who distributed it.

Thomas had refused to hand over the original.

He had escaped with a copy and contacted Angela from a secure location.

The recording was delivered to her the following morning.

We gathered in her conference room to listen.

Richard's voice was unmistakable.

He spoke calmly, discussing the financial transfers and the custody filing as though he were arranging a routine business transaction.

Then another voice entered the recording.

Richard's lawyer.

“What if Danielle challenges the withdrawal?”

Richard laughed.

“She won't. By the time she realizes what happened, she'll be too frightened to return.”

“And Marcus?”

“I've taken care of Marcus. He'll stay away.”

There was a pause.

Then Richard said something that made my hands go cold.

“Danielle has one weakness. Her daughter. If she thinks fighting me will put the child in danger, she'll disappear without another word.”

I pressed my fingers against my mouth.

My mother had not abandoned her dreams because she lacked courage.

She had been forced to choose between justice and my safety.

The recording continued.

Richard discussed transferring the designs into a subsidiary and making it appear that Danielle had sold her rights.

He mentioned the false bank transaction involving Marcus.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Once the girl is old enough to understand, we'll make sure she believes her father sold her mother out. Nobody will trust a family that can't even tell the truth about itself.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I felt something inside me break.

For seventeen years, I had wondered why my family was broken.

Now I understood that someone had deliberately broken it.

Richard hadn't simply stolen designs.

He had stolen relationships, opportunities, and years that could never be returned.

Angela contacted the investigators handling the financial case. The recording, combined with the original records and Patricia's testimony, gave them grounds to pursue further action.

A few days later, Richard was formally notified that the company records were under investigation.

He responded by attacking us publicly.

An article appeared online claiming Dr. Whitmore had fabricated the allegations to seize control of Richard's company.

Another suggested that I was being manipulated by wealthy adults who wanted to use a grieving teenager as a weapon in a business dispute.

My school became a battlefield of whispers.

Students who had once applauded my scholarship now avoided looking at me.

Brianna's friends claimed she had been tricked into apologizing.

Then Brianna did something I never expected.

She stood in the cafeteria and admitted what she had done.

“I humiliated Maya because I thought her clothes made her inferior to me,” she said, her voice shaking. “My father told me her family was dishonest, but I never bothered to find out whether that was true. I chose cruelty because it made me feel powerful.”

The cafeteria went silent.

“I was wrong. Maya deserved respect before I knew anything about her family, and she deserves it now.”

She didn't ask me to forgive her.

She simply walked away.

For the first time, I saw her accept responsibility without demanding anything in return.

I wasn't ready to call her a friend.

But I respected what she had done.

The next major development came from the corporate records.

Angela discovered that Richard's subsidiary had collected royalties from the Blue Promise designs for years. The money had passed through multiple accounts, making the trail difficult to follow.

However, the original company documents named Danielle and Evelyn as equal partners.

There was no signed transfer of Danielle's ownership.

That meant Richard might have profited from property that never legally belonged to him.

Angela prepared a claim on behalf of Danielle's estate.

I was asked to provide my mother's death certificate and proof that I was her only child.

It was strange to think that a document confirming the worst day of my life could help restore something she had lost.

While we worked, Marcus began showing up in small ways.

He called before school to ask how I was doing.

He never demanded a visit.

He sent me photographs of himself with my mother, along with stories about her that made me laugh despite myself.

He told me she used to sing while sewing, usually inventing ridiculous lyrics when she couldn't remember a song.

He remembered how she hated burnt toast and loved rainy afternoons.

I learned that she had once dreamed of opening a fashion studio where young women from struggling families could learn to design and sew.

“She wanted people to have choices,” Marcus told me during one of our conversations. “She believed talent shouldn't disappear just because someone was poor.”

I thought of my own future.

For years, I had planned to study business because it seemed practical.

Now I was considering fashion design.

Not because I wanted to become my mother, but because I wanted to understand the part of her life that had been stolen from her.

One evening, Marcus arrived at Grandma's house carrying a small package.

Inside was a sketchbook.

My mother's original designs filled the pages.

At the back was a drawing of the pale-blue dress I wore to the ceremony.

Underneath it, she had written:

For Maya, when she is ready to stand in her own light.

I cried until Marcus sat beside me and held my hand.

I didn't tell him I forgave him.

But I didn't pull away.

Then Angela called with urgent news.

Richard's company had agreed to produce additional records, but one document was missing.

The original agreement that established Danielle's ownership.

Without it, Richard's lawyers could challenge our claim.

Thomas believed he knew where the agreement was.

May you like

It had been kept in Richard's private office for years.

And according to Brianna, the office was about to be cleared before the investigators could search it.
