Surprise

Chapter 1

Ten minutes before I was due to marry Vanessa Cole, my three-year-old grandson caught my hand outside the ballroom.

“Grandpa,” Noah whispered, “she hit Mommy.”

I knelt in my tuxedo.

The hallway around us was crowded with white roses, photographers, and hotel staff preparing for the ceremony. Beyond the doors, a string quartet was playing Vanessa’s favorite song.

I could barely hear it.

“Who hit her, buddy?”

He glanced over his shoulder before answering.

“Vanessa.”

Noah was usually loud enough to announce every thought to an entire room. Seeing him afraid to speak made my stomach tighten.

“Where’s your mother?”

He pointed toward the service corridor.

“She was crying.”

I stood, ready to go after Claire, but Noah held on.

“Mommy said to give you this.”

He pressed a black USB drive into my palm.

“Why didn’t she give it to me herself?”

“I don’t know.”

My oldest friend Samuel came down the hallway. He was my best man, though at that moment he looked more like the man who had helped me through every disaster since college.

“We’re almost ready,” he said.

“Find Claire.”

He saw Noah’s face and stopped asking questions. I pointed toward the service corridor, and he went.

I carried Noah into the small conference room my attorney had reserved for signing papers later. My laptop sat on the table. I inserted the drive.

Three folders appeared.

VANESSA.

BRENT.

DAD — WATCH FIRST.

Claire’s face filled the screen when I opened the last one. She was sitting in her car, speaking straight to the camera. Makeup covered most of the mark on her cheek. It did not cover enough.

“Dad, I wanted to tell you in person,” she said. “I was afraid you’d think I was trying to stop the wedding because I miss Mom.”

I did love Claire’s mother. Margaret had been gone four years, and I missed her every day. But I had also used that grief as an answer whenever Claire worried aloud about Vanessa.

Claire swallowed.

“Three months ago, I found transfers from Whitmore Family Holdings to accounts connected to Vanessa’s brother, Brent. I asked our accountant whether I was reading the records correctly. I was.”

Documents appeared, followed by footage from the camera in my home office.

Vanessa and Brent were searching my desk while I was away. I recognized the date. I had been in Boston.

Brent opened a drawer. Vanessa lifted a folder.

“Once Richard signs after the wedding, Claire won’t be able to stop it,” she said.

I leaned toward the screen.

Brent laughed. “What if he reads everything?”

“He trusts me. He’s spent the last year proving that.”

Then she spoke about me as if I were an object she had learned to use.

I paused the video. Noah had climbed onto the chair beside me. He was watching my face, so I made myself breathe.

Samuel opened the door.

“They found Claire in the security office downstairs,” he said. “She’s safe with a staff member.”

“Is she hurt?”

“Vanessa slapped her when Claire refused to hand over her phone. Claire says Brent blocked the hallway while it happened.”

I looked at Noah. He had seen enough to understand his mother was frightened, even if he could not explain the rest.

“I’m going to get her,” I said.

Samuel shook his head.

“She asked me to bring you the evidence first. She’s coming up with security now.”

Applause rose from the ballroom. The wedding coordinator appeared in the doorway.

“Mr. Whitmore? We’re ready.”

Through the open doors, I saw the guests standing. Vanessa waited near the front in her white dress, smiling at me.

I had intended to sign a new company agreement after the ceremony. Vanessa had called it a simple step toward joining our families. I remembered how quickly I had agreed to look at it later.

Claire had been trying to reach me before later arrived.

I closed the laptop and removed the drive. My hands were shaking, but I knew what I wanted to do.

“Samuel, bring me the projector remote.”

He stared at me.

“I need a minute with the room,” I said. “And I need Claire beside me when I speak.”

The coordinator looked between us. I asked her to keep the guests seated and to make sure no one left with our conference-room papers.

Samuel returned with the remote. A staff member brought the laptop toward the ballroom equipment while another stayed with Noah.

I stepped through the doors.

Vanessa smiled wider when she saw me. I smiled back because I needed to get close enough to the microphone without giving her time to stop me.

At the front, I took Noah’s hand.

The music faded.

One hundred and forty people waited for me to say my vows.

I looked toward the side entrance. Claire had just appeared there with Samuel.

May you like

I raised the microphone.

“There will be no wedding,” I said. “But there is something my daughter needs me to tell you.”
