Surprise

Chapter 7 - The Last Threat

I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

Malik looked up at me.

"Daddy, what's wrong?"

I forced my face to relax.

"Nothing you need to worry about, buddy."

He studied me.

Children notice more than we think.

"Was that Grandpa Vernon?"

I didn't answer quickly enough.

Malik's smile disappeared.

Nia approached.

"Who called?"

I looked at her.

"Vernon."

Her face went pale.

"What did he say?"

I glanced at Malik.

"Let's talk in the kitchen."

She understood.

"Malik, sweetheart, can you finish your homework?"

He hesitated.

Then nodded.

I waited until he was in his room before repeating Vernon's threat.

Nia began trembling.

"He threatened Malik?"

"Yes."

She reached for her phone.

I caught her wrist gently.

"Don't call him."

"I have to tell him to stay away."

"No. We tell the investigators."

She stared at me.

"What if they don't believe us?"

"Then we keep documenting everything until someone does."

I realized I was speaking to her the way I wished someone had spoken to me five years earlier.

Calmly.

Clearly.

Without surrendering to fear.

We called Rebecca.

She contacted Daniel.

I preserved the call log and wrote down Vernon's exact words.

Then Nia made another call.

To Marcus.

When he arrived, I could tell he already knew something had happened.

"What did Vernon do?"

I told him.

His expression hardened.

"That son of a—"

"Don't," I interrupted.

He looked at me.

"Don't what?"

"Don't storm over there. Don't threaten him. Don't give him another excuse to make us look dangerous."

Marcus breathed heavily.

Then he nodded.

"You're right."

I almost smiled.

It was the first time he had ever said those words to me.

But the situation wasn't funny.

We had to protect Malik.

That night, Nia packed a small suitcase.

Malik watched from his bedroom doorway.

"Are we going somewhere?"

She knelt.

"Just staying with Aunt Denise for a little while."

"Why?"

"Because I want us all to be comfortable and safe."

He glanced at me.

"Is Daddy coming?"

My heart twisted.

Nia looked at me.

I crouched beside him.

"I'll be nearby, buddy."

His face fell.

"But I want you with us."

I couldn't promise something I wasn't legally or practically ready to do.

My supervision conditions still limited where I could live.

And I wasn't going to violate them.

So I told him the truth.

"I'm working on being able to spend more time with you."

He looked disappointed.

Then he asked, "Can I call you every night?"

My throat tightened.

"Every night."

He held up his pinkie.

"Promise?"

I linked mine with his.

"Promise."

We took Nia and Malik to Denise's house.

Marcus followed in his car.

I stayed long enough to make sure they were settled.

Then I returned to the small rented room where I had been living since my release.

It was barely bigger than a closet.

One bed.

One dresser.

A hot plate.

A window facing a parking lot.

But it was mine.

And I had worked hard to pay for it.

I sat on the edge of the mattress.

For the first time all day, I was alone.

I opened the gift bag that had been crushed in the hallway.

Inside was a remote-controlled truck.

The box was dented.

One corner was torn.

I had wanted to give it to Malik when I first saw him.

Instead, the day had turned into a nightmare.

I placed it carefully on the dresser.

Then I opened my phone.

There was a message from Nia.

"Malik is asleep. He asked me to tell you he loves you."

I stared at the words.

I read them again.

And again.

Then the tears came.

I bent forward and cried harder than I had cried in years.

I cried for the little boy I had left behind.

For the birthdays I had missed.

For the father I had wanted to be.

For the man I had become.

But beneath the grief was something new.

Hope.

The next morning, Rebecca called.

"Daniel's team moved quickly."

I sat upright.

"What happened?"

"They obtained warrants connected to the financial investigation."

My pulse quickened.

"Vernon?"

"His business offices and certain records."

"Was he arrested?"

"Not yet."

I felt disappointed.

Rebecca continued.

"But Calvin has been brought in for questioning."

I stood.

"Did he talk?"

"We don't know. The investigators aren't sharing everything."

She paused.

"There's another development."

"What?"

"Your original trial attorney kept a copy of the property inventory."

I froze.

"The keys?"

"Yes."

I sat down again.

Rebecca spoke carefully.

"The inventory shows one maintenance key removed from your pocket at the scene."

My heart pounded.

"And the other key?"

"Listed separately as recovered near the electrical room."

I closed my eyes.

Two keys.

I had told them.

For five years, I had told them.

Rebecca continued.

"The prosecution's trial presentation appears to have treated the scene key as yours without clearly addressing the separate inventory entry."

I pressed my fist against my mouth.

"Can we prove who planted it?"

"Not yet. But the discrepancy is significant."

I stared out the window.

For the first time, the lie was beginning to break apart piece by piece.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Marcus.

"Turn on the news."

I opened a local station's livestream.

Vernon's office building filled the screen.

Investigators were carrying boxes through the front entrance.

Reporters stood behind police barriers.

A headline announced a widening property-fraud investigation.

Then Vernon appeared.

He wore an expensive suit.

His silver hair was perfectly styled.

He smiled at the cameras.

"These accusations are the work of a disgruntled former employee," he said.

My stomach tightened.

He was talking about me.

Vernon continued.

"Mr. Coleman is a convicted criminal with a history of instability."

I felt my face burn.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Some people will say anything to escape responsibility for their actions."

I turned off the stream.

For a moment, I wanted to throw my phone.

Then it rang again.

Marcus.

I answered.

"Did you see it?"

"Yes."

"He's trying to destroy your credibility."

"I know."

Marcus hesitated.

"There's something I haven't told you."

My chest tightened.

"What now?"

"I met with Calvin yesterday."

I closed my eyes.

"Marcus."

"Listen. He wanted to talk."

"What did he say?"

Marcus was silent for a moment.

Then he whispered, "Vernon offered him money to take all the blame."

I stood slowly.

"How much?"

"Half a million dollars."

My blood ran cold.

"And?"

"Calvin refused."

I stared at the wall.

"Why?"

Marcus exhaled.

"Because he says Vernon has already arranged for someone else to disappear."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

May you like

Marcus's voice cracked.

"Evelyn."
