Surprise
MOM?! WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7

I read the draft announcement three times.

It began with my name.

Marcus Carter.

Chief Executive Officer.

Carter Development Group.

Then it explained that I was taking an indefinite medical leave due to an unexpected health condition.

It thanked clients for their understanding.

It announced that management responsibilities would pass temporarily to an appointed representative.

Vanessa.

I stared at Rebecca.

"She planned to tell the company I was sick?"

Rebecca nodded carefully.

"The document suggests that was one proposed explanation."

I felt cold.

"But I'm not sick."

"I know."

I read the draft again.

It described private medical consultations.

It claimed I needed rest.

It suggested that public appearances would be limited.

The language was professional.

Convincing.

Exactly the kind of statement investors might accept without asking too many questions.

"Who wrote this?"

Rebecca looked at the document.

"We're still determining authorship."

I closed my eyes.

A terrible possibility formed in my mind.

Vanessa had insisted we take a private honeymoon abroad after the wedding.

She arranged the flights.

The hotel.

The transportation.

She told me she wanted two weeks without work calls.

I thought it was romantic.

Now I wondered whether she planned to use my absence to announce a medical emergency.

I looked at Rebecca.

"Did she intend to keep me away from the company?"

"That's one possibility investigators are examining."

I swallowed.

"What about the documents transferring control?"

"They were prepared but not validly executed. Your legal team and the relevant institutions have been notified."

I exhaled slowly.

For the first time, I understood how close I had come to losing control of my own business.

Not because I made a bad investment.

Not because the market collapsed.

But because someone I trusted had allegedly prepared a plan to use my identity and absence against me.

I drove straight to Mom's medical suite.

She was walking slowly with her nurse.

When she saw me, she smiled.

"Marcus."

I hugged her carefully.

"Mom."

She studied my face.

"What's wrong?"

I told her about the draft announcement.

Her expression changed.

She lowered herself into a chair.

"I knew she was planning something after the wedding."

I stared at her.

"How?"

Mom hesitated.

"Vanessa kept asking about your travel plans."

I frowned.

"That seems normal."

"Not the questions she asked."

Mom looked down.

"She wanted to know whether you had ever been hospitalized overseas. Whether your company could function without you. Whether your lawyers had prepared emergency management documents."

My stomach tightened.

I remembered Vanessa asking similar questions.

She said every successful couple needed contingency plans.

I agreed.

I even praised her for being practical.

Now those conversations felt sinister.

Mom touched my arm.

"Marcus, don't let fear make you imagine things we haven't proved."

I looked at her.

She continued.

"We know she lied. We know there are suspicious documents. We know she helped keep me away. But we still need evidence about what she intended to do next."

I nodded.

She was right.

Even now, after everything, Mom was more interested in truth than revenge.

That evening, Detective Brooks called.

Derek had agreed to provide a statement through his attorney.

He admitted helping Vanessa access certain company systems.

He also admitted participating in the plan to keep Mom away from the wedding.

But he claimed Vanessa had misled him about the purpose.

According to Derek, she told him Mom was interfering with the marriage and needed time to calm down.

I almost laughed.

He was head of security.

He understood what a locked property meant.

He knew Mom didn't have her phone.

He knew she wasn't free to leave.

Detective Brooks assured me that his claims would be evaluated against the evidence.

Then she mentioned something else.

Derek said Vanessa had been communicating with an outside financial adviser.

His name was Adrian Cole.

I recognized the name.

Adrian had attended our wedding.

He was a tall, charming man in his late thirties.

Vanessa introduced him as a family friend who specialized in international investments.

He gave us an expensive wedding gift.

A gold watch.

I remembered thanking him.

Now I felt sick.

"What was his role?"

Detective Brooks replied, "We believe he may have helped structure some of the financial transactions."

I gripped the phone.

"Where is he?"

"Investigators are trying to locate him."

I stared out the window.

The scheme appeared larger than I had imagined.

Vanessa.

Derek.

Olivia.

Possibly Adrian.

How many people had been involved?

How long had they been planning?

And how much of my life had been manipulated before I noticed?

Several days later, Rebecca discovered another connection.

Adrian had previously been involved in a property investment company that collapsed after allegations of misleading investors.

No criminal conviction had resulted from that matter.

But civil disputes had followed.

Vanessa had known him for years.

I stared at the report.

"She told me they met at a charity event."

Rebecca nodded.

"That may be where you first met him. But their business relationship appears older."

I felt angry.

Every time I learned something new, another part of Vanessa's story collapsed.

Then Mom called.

Her voice sounded shaken.

"Marcus, I found something."

I sat upright.

"What?"

"I was going through the documents Helen helped me preserve."

I held my breath.

"Okay."

"There's an email from Vanessa to Adrian."

My heart pounded.

"What does it say?"

Mom swallowed.

"It mentions the wedding and the honeymoon."

I closed my eyes.

"Read it."

She hesitated.

Then she spoke.

"The first transfer must clear while Marcus is unavailable. Once the documents are accepted, nobody can stop us."

My hands began shaking.

"Is that all?"

"No."

I waited.

Mom's voice broke.

"Adrian replied."

I gripped the phone.

"What did he say?"

She whispered, "Make sure Evelyn doesn't come back before the ceremony."

I went completely still.

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not a disagreement about the wedding.

A written instruction linking my mother's disappearance to the financial scheme.

I closed my eyes.

Then I heard Mom crying.

"Marcus, they knew I was the only person who could warn you."

I swallowed.

I wanted to tell her everything would be okay.

But the truth was more complicated.

We were safe tonight.

The accounts were protected.

The investigation was moving forward.

Yet I was still learning how close we had come to disaster.

I took a slow breath.

"Mom, send that email to Rebecca and Detective Brooks."

She nodded.

"I already did."

I smiled sadly.

That was my mother.

Even after everything, she was thinking clearly.

Then she said something that made my chest tighten.

"Marcus, I don't want you to spend the rest of your life hating Vanessa."

I stared at the phone.

"How can you say that?"

"Because hatred will keep her inside your life long after the courts are finished."

I swallowed.

"Then what should I feel?"

Mom took a breath.

"Whatever you need to feel now. But someday, I hope you feel peace."

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, I understood that justice and peace weren't the same thing.

One required accountability.

May you like

The other required healing.

And we deserved both.
