Surprise

Chapter 2

Adrian reached for my wrist.

Caleb spoke before his hand closed.

“Step away from her.”

Adrian turned, irritated. “This is between my wife and me.”

The security officer stood beside Caleb.

“Sir, please give her space.”

I stepped backward. My knees felt weak, but there was a chair behind me. Marcus moved it aside so I could keep going toward the exit.

Adrian looked at him.

“And who are you?”

“My brother,” I said.

The words felt strange after so many years of silence.

Adrian glanced from Marcus to Caleb, then to Julian.

“All three of them,” I added.

Vanessa’s eyes widened. Julian’s face was familiar to her. His company name appeared on the donor board beside the stage.

Adrian gave a short laugh.

“So this was planned.”

“The gala was planned,” I said. “You chose to hit me.”

He took another step. Security moved between us.

Caleb identified himself to the guard but made clear he was attending as a guest. He asked the guard to call on-duty officers and preserve the ballroom footage.

“I won’t handle the investigation,” he said. “She’s my sister.”

I heard every word. He was making sure Adrian couldn’t later say my brothers had used their positions to decide the case.

Julian stood close enough to help without touching me.

“Can we go somewhere quieter?” he asked.

I nodded.

The hotel manager led us into a private meeting room. Marcus stayed near the doorway while Caleb spoke with the manager about what had happened. Julian brought water.

I tried to lift the glass. My hand shook too badly.

“May I?” he asked.

He set it within reach and waited.

Nobody told me to calm down.

Nobody asked why I had made Adrian angry.

That almost undid me.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Marcus crouched in front of me.

“For what?”

“For bringing you into this.”

“We came because you asked us to.”

I pressed my fingers against my lips. “I didn’t think he’d do it here.”

Caleb turned from the door.

“Has he done it elsewhere?”

I looked down.

That was the answer I had spent years avoiding.

“Yes.”

Marcus closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, he looked at me with the same care as before.

“We can talk about that when you’re ready.”

The hotel manager asked whether I wanted medical assistance. I said yes.

While we waited, Julian asked if I wanted him to stay. I realized he was giving me choices because Adrian had taken so many from me.

“I want all of you here.”

“We’re staying,” he said.

Two officers arrived. They separated the guests who had witnessed the slap and asked the hotel to save its security recordings.

An officer named Patel came into the meeting room and asked whether I would prefer to speak without my brothers present.

I thought about it.

“I want Marcus beside me. The others can wait outside.”

Caleb and Julian left immediately.

Officer Patel asked what had happened. I told her about Vanessa’s speech, Rosa’s missing housing payment, and Adrian coming down the aisle.

Then I told her about the slap.

She asked whether Adrian had hurt me before.

I said yes again.

It was easier the second time, though I hated that it was.

I described two earlier incidents. One had left a bruise on my arm. The other had happened after I tried to leave the house during an argument.

“Do you have photographs or messages?” she asked.

“Some.”

I took out my phone.

The folder I had saved was small. I hadn’t kept evidence for years. I had only begun after speaking with Caleb.

There were three photographs and several messages in which Adrian told me to stay home until I could “behave.”

Officer Patel explained how she would preserve copies and asked if I wanted an advocate to help me plan where to go that night.

I accepted.

Outside, I heard Adrian raise his voice.

“She’s my wife. I’m taking her home.”

Marcus looked toward the door.

Officer Patel stood.

“You’ll decide where you go,” she told me. “He won’t.”

When she returned, she said Adrian was being detained while officers completed their investigation. Witnesses and video supported what I had described.

I felt relief, then fear.

“He’ll be furious.”

Marcus didn’t promise me he could stop every bad thing.

“We’ll make a plan before you leave,” he said.

The advocate arrived with a notebook and a quiet voice. She asked about my home, my phone, my accounts, and who Adrian might contact.

I told her I had no children. Adrian had said we weren’t ready each time I brought it up. Eventually, I stopped asking.

She asked where I felt safest.

“With my brothers.”

We decided I would stay at Julian’s guesthouse for the night because Adrian did not know the address. I would keep my phone for evidence but stop using shared accounts until I had advice about securing them.

The advocate wrote the plan down and gave me a copy.

Before we left, the foundation’s board chair, Helen, asked to speak with me.

She looked pale.

“I saw what happened,” she said. “I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

“You said the housing payments weren’t made.”

“Yes.”

“Do you have records?”

“Copies.”

She looked toward Julian, then back at me.

“We need an independent review. I can call a board meeting tomorrow.”

I thought of Rosa sitting in her car.

“Please don’t let the review delay urgent help,” I said.

Helen promised to find out what could be paid immediately.

As we left through the service entrance, Vanessa stood at the end of the corridor.

She looked at my cheek, then at my brothers.

“Adrian knows things about the foundation you don’t,” she said.

I stopped.

“Then he can tell the auditors.”

Her face changed.

Julian opened the car door for me. I got in, clutching the advocate’s written plan.

My phone buzzed before we pulled away.

It was a message from Rosa.

I saw the gala video. Are you safe?

May you like

I looked at my brothers waiting until I was settled.

For the first time, I answered yes without having to pretend.
