Surprise

Chapter 5 - The Secret In Nicole’s Purse

The protective order was granted the next morning.

Brent and Nicole could not come near the house.

They could not contact Lily.

They could not contact Emma.

They could not use relatives to pass messages.

The judge said the words calmly.

I heard them like a door locking from our side.

But the investigation did not stop there.

Officer Harris called me two days later.

“We found something in Nicole’s purse you need to see.”

I drove to the station with Lily beside me.

Emma stayed with Captain Reed’s wife, Marisol, who had the warmest kitchen in the world and three children who treated Emma like a visiting queen.

At the station, Officer Harris placed a clear evidence photo on the table.

A small flash drive.

“What is it?” Lily asked.

“Video files,” Harris said. “Some from inside your home.”

My stomach dropped.

“Our home?”

He nodded.

“Hidden camera footage. Your office. Kitchen. Hallway.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Nicole had watched them.

While I was gone, while Lily made coffee, while Emma did homework, while Scout slept by the stairs.

The violation was so deep I could not speak.

Harris continued.

“There’s more. The footage shows Nicole entering your home multiple times when Lily wasn’t there. Brent too. They copied documents. Tested keys. Searched drawers.”

Lily whispered, “How long?”

“Six weeks.”

Six weeks.

While I was overseas counting days until home, my brother had been counting ways to steal it.

Harris slid another paper forward.

“Also, we found messages between Brent and Nicole. They believed Mason’s return date had been pushed back.”

I frowned.

“It was. Then it changed again.”

“They thought they had four more days.”

Lily looked at me.

“That’s why they panicked when you came home.”

Harris nodded.

“They were trying to force the signature before you appeared.”

“And Emma ruined it,” I said.

My voice broke on her name.

My little girl had become the obstacle between criminals and my life.

No child should carry that.

Harris leaned forward.

“There’s also evidence they planned to claim Lily had abandoned the home emotionally. Nicole drafted statements about neglect.”

Lily went white.

“She was going to say I was unfit.”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to tilt.

I reached for Lily’s hand.

Her fingers were ice cold.

“She wanted Emma too,” Lily whispered.

I looked at Harris.

He did not deny it.

“They had notes about temporary guardianship if Mason was deployed again.”

That was when I stood.

The chair scraped the floor.

Harris rose too.

“Mason.”

I put both hands on the table and forced myself to breathe.

Nicole had not only wanted money.

She wanted control.

She wanted my wife erased and my daughter used.

Lily stood beside me.

“Look at me.”

I did.

Her eyes were full of fear, but also fire.

“They failed.”

I nodded.

“They failed.”

When we got home, Emma ran into Lily’s arms first.

Then mine.

I held her too tight and apologized when she squeaked.

She laughed a little.

“What happened?”

I looked at Lily.

We had promised not to hide things from Emma just to make ourselves comfortable.

So we told her the safe version.

Brent and Nicole had planned bad things.

The police found proof.

Emma did the right thing by telling.

She listened quietly.

Then she said, “So I wasn’t being nosy?”

I almost broke.

“No, baby. You were being brave.”

That night, Emma asked if Scout could sleep on her bed.

May you like

Scout already had.

None of us argued.
