Chapter 6

The hearing happened three days later.
Ruby did not have to appear.
That was Naomi’s first gift to her.
“She has already been brave enough,” Naomi said.
So Ruby stayed home with Mrs. Alvarez, Dr. Bell, and enough protection to make my house feel like a fortress.
I went to court with Daniel, Marco, and a folder full of proof.
Lucinda arrived with her father.
She wore cream.
Soft makeup.
No jewelry except her wedding ring.
She looked like a woman wronged.
I felt nothing.
Not love.
Not rage.
Only clarity.
Senator Vale touched her shoulder as cameras flashed outside the courthouse.
Inside, he did not smile.
The judge reviewed the footage privately first.
Then the statements.
Then Dr. Bell’s report.
Lucinda’s attorney argued stress.
Misunderstanding.
Household discipline.
He said Ruby was fragile and confused.
That was the first time I nearly stood.
Daniel put a hand on my arm.
“Let me,” he whispered.
He rose.
“My client’s six-year-old daughter was recovering from a serious leg injury. The respondent repeatedly removed prescribed medical support, threatened the child, and concealed her conduct. This is not discipline. This is abuse.”
Lucinda stared at the table.
Her father stared at me.
Then Naomi spoke.
Calm.
Precise.
Devastating.
She explained Ruby’s fear response.
Her language.
Her belief that she would be sent away.
By the time Naomi finished, even Lucinda’s attorney had stopped taking notes.
The judge granted the protective order.
No contact.
No visits.
No access to Ruby.
Lucinda’s mouth fell open.
“Your Honor, she is my stepdaughter.”
The judge looked at her.
“And you used that position to harm her.”
Lucinda began to cry again.
This time nobody moved to comfort her except her father.
Outside the courtroom, Senator Vale blocked my path.
“You think this is over?”
Marco stepped forward, but I raised a hand.
“It is over for your daughter in my house.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You will regret humiliating my family.”
I leaned close enough that only he could hear.
“Your family tried to break a child. Mine survived.”
I walked away.
But Senator Vale kept his promise.
That evening, my biggest investor called.
Then another.
Then a board member.
By dinner, three contracts were “under review.”
I understood.
Vale was squeezing my business.
Trying to make me choose between money and Ruby.
Ruby sat across from me eating soup, her brace secure, her hair tied with a yellow ribbon.
She caught me looking worried.
“Daddy?”
I smiled.
“Yes?”
“Are we poor now?”
Mrs. Alvarez made a small sound behind me.
I laughed softly despite everything.
“No, princess.”
“Because I don’t need a big birthday next time,” she said. “Just pancakes.”
My chest ached.
I reached across the table.
“You can have pancakes and a castle if you want.”
She thought about that.
“Can the castle have ramps?”
“Yes.”
“And no Lucinda?”
“Never.”
Ruby smiled.
Small.
Real.
The first real smile in days.
I decided right then.
Let Senator Vale come for my empire.
I would build another.
May you like
But Ruby’s smile?
No one would touch that again.
