Chapter 7 - The Man Behind Everything

The limousine stopped near the academy's front entrance.
I recognized the man who stepped out.
Charles Whitmore.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly dressed.
He carried himself like someone accustomed to doors opening before he reached them.
Brittany went completely still beside me.
"Grandpa," she whispered.
Charles spotted us.
His expression remained friendly.
"Well, well. My two beautiful granddaughters."
I felt my stomach twist.
I was not his granddaughter.
He had never treated me like family.
He approached and kissed Brittany's forehead.
Then he turned toward me.
"Emily. I hear you've had quite an emotional week."
I didn't answer.
His smile widened.
"Your stepmother is terribly concerned."
Dad appeared behind me.
"Charles."
The older man's expression changed.
"Richard."
Dad stepped beside me.
"Stay away from my daughter."
Charles chuckled.
"That's a dramatic greeting."
"Not dramatic enough."
I had never heard Dad speak with such controlled anger.
Charles glanced toward the academy building.
"Perhaps we should discuss this privately."
"No," I said.
Both men looked at me.
I swallowed.
But I continued.
"I'd like you to answer a question."
Charles raised an eyebrow.
"Go ahead."
"Did you threaten my mother?"
His smile disappeared.
For one brief second, I saw something cold in his eyes.
"Who told you that?"
I stepped forward.
"Did you?"
He looked toward Dad.
"Richard, your daughter is clearly distressed."
"I asked you a question."
Charles leaned closer.
"Young lady, I suggest you be careful about making accusations."
I could feel my hands shaking.
Dad touched my shoulder.
Charles straightened.
"Your mother and I had business disagreements. Nothing more."
"Then why did she leave a recording warning people about Vanessa?"
His face changed.
Not much.
Just enough.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes flicked toward Brittany.
Then he smiled again.
"Elizabeth always was suspicious."
I wanted to scream.
My mother had been brave enough to fight him while dying.
And he stood there dismissing her.
Dad stepped forward.
"This conversation is over."
Charles reached into his jacket.
He removed an envelope.
"Actually, Richard, I came to offer a solution."
He handed it to Dad.
Inside was a proposed settlement.
Dad read the first page.
His expression hardened.
"What is this?"
"A generous offer."
Charles smiled.
"Ten million dollars for Emily, payable immediately into a protected account."
I stared.
He continued.
"In exchange, the family agrees to resolve the land dispute privately."
Dad looked up.
"You're offering her ten million dollars to surrender property worth far more?"
Charles shrugged.
"Certainty has value."
I shook my head.
"No."
He turned toward me.
"Emily, think carefully."
"I said no."
His smile faded.
"You don't understand business."
"Maybe not."
I raised my chin.
"But I understand when someone wants to take something that isn't theirs."
For the first time, Charles looked angry.
Then he leaned toward me.
"Your mother made the same mistake."
Everything inside me went cold.
Dad stepped between us.
"Get away from her."
Charles looked around.
Several teachers had begun watching.
He adjusted his cuffs.
"This isn't finished."
Then he walked back toward the limousine.
I stood frozen until the car disappeared.
Brittany began crying beside me.
"I told you."
Dad looked at her.
"Thank you for warning us."
She shook her head.
"I don't deserve that."
Her voice broke.
"I laughed when Mom destroyed Emily's dress."
I didn't speak.
Brittany looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
The words felt strange.
For years, she had been my tormentor.
Now she stood crying in front of the school.
I wanted to believe her.
But trust wasn't something I could hand over because someone asked.
"I hear you," I said.
Her eyes lifted hopefully.
"But I don't know if I can forgive you yet."
She nodded.
"I understand."
We left her standing beside the entrance.
Inside the car, Dad called Thomas.
He explained the encounter.
Thomas listened carefully.
Then he asked us to come directly to his office.
When we arrived, he had unsettling news.
"The document examiner has confirmed that several signatures were copied from unrelated school forms."
My heart jumped.
"That proves I didn't authorize anything?"
"It's strong evidence," he said. "And the original records will help establish exactly how the documents were created."
Dad exhaled.
Thomas continued.
"We've also located a witness."
"Who?" I asked.
"Vanessa's former personal assistant."
I frowned.
I remembered a woman named Karen who had worked at our house briefly.
She disappeared after an argument with Vanessa.
"Karen Miles?"
Thomas nodded.
"She's willing to make a sworn statement."
Dad leaned forward.
"About what?"
"She says Vanessa instructed her to prepare documents transferring control of the trust."
I covered my mouth.
Thomas looked at me.
"Karen refused to falsify anything. She resigned shortly afterward."
"Why didn't she tell anyone?"
"She says Vanessa threatened to ruin her career."
I understood.
Vanessa knew exactly how to make people afraid.
Thomas took out another folder.
"And there's more."
He showed Dad several financial records.
They revealed a series of payments from Mercer Holdings to a consulting company controlled by Charles Whitmore.
Dad studied them.
"What were these for?"
"Investigators are examining whether they funded efforts to interfere with the trust."
My heart raced.
For the first time, Vanessa's plan seemed close to collapsing.
Then Thomas's phone rang.
He answered.
"Whitaker speaking."
His expression changed.
"What?"
Dad straightened.
Thomas listened for several seconds.
Then he looked at us.
"Thank you. I'll be there."
He ended the call.
"What happened?" Dad asked.
Thomas swallowed.
"The county investigators have opened a formal case."
I almost smiled.
But then he continued.
"There's a complication."
My stomach dropped.
"What complication?"
"Vanessa has filed an emergency court petition alleging that Emily is being manipulated by her father."
Dad stared at him.
"On what grounds?"
Thomas looked furious.
"She claims Richard used his unusual fire ability to terrorize the household and force Emily to reject the transfer."
I felt sick.
The blue liquid.
The burning dresses.
The very moment Dad protected me.
Vanessa had turned it into a weapon.
Thomas looked at Dad.
"Richard, we need to prepare carefully. The court may take any allegation involving a minor very seriously."
My father nodded.
"I'll tell them exactly what happened."
I reached for his hand.
For once, I understood that protection wasn't always loud.
Sometimes it meant telling the truth even when the truth made you look imperfect.
Then Thomas said something else.
"The court wants to hear directly from Emily."
I looked up.
"Me?"
"Yes."
His voice softened.
"Your story matters."
My heart pounded.
May you like
After years of being silenced, I would finally be allowed to speak.
But I had no idea how far Vanessa would go to stop me.
