Surprise

Chapter 3 - The Video My Daughter Hid

I stared at the tiny memory card in Lily's hand.

It was no bigger than my thumbnail.

Yet my daughter held it as though it contained the most dangerous secret in the world.

“Where did you get this?” I whispered.

Lily looked toward the bedroom door.

“From my tablet.”

I frowned.

“Your tablet?”

She nodded.

“You gave it to me for my birthday.”

I remembered.

It was a small blue tablet with a protective case.

I had bought it so Lily could read books, practice math, and video-call me when I traveled for work.

I hadn't seen it in months.

“Where is it now?”

“Denise took it.”

“Why?”

Lily swallowed.

“Because she caught me recording.”

My heart pounded.

“Recording what?”

She looked down.

“Her.”

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I gently closed her fingers around the memory card.

“Sweetheart, you were very brave to tell me.”

She shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

I brushed a tear from her cheek.

“Being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared.”

She leaned against me.

I wanted to watch the video immediately.

But I knew Lily had already endured enough questioning for one afternoon.

So I put the memory card safely into my wallet.

Then I helped her pack.

Two changes of clothes.

Her teddy bear.

Her mother's photograph.

Her schoolbooks.

And the drawing she'd made.

That was everything she wanted to take.

I looked around her bedroom.

There should have been more.

A child shouldn't be able to fit her entire world into one small backpack.

As we walked downstairs, I heard Denise arguing with someone.

Her voice was sharp.

“I told you he wouldn't understand!”

Then another voice answered.

Tasha.

“Mom, you said he never checked the accounts.”

I stopped.

Lily squeezed my hand.

We stood near the bottom of the staircase.

Denise spoke again.

“Lower your voice!”

Maya whispered something I couldn't hear.

Then Tasha said, “What are we supposed to do with all the stuff you bought?”

My stomach tightened.

They knew.

Maybe not everything.

But they knew the shopping had been connected to Lily's money.

I walked into the kitchen.

All three of them froze.

Denise looked at Lily's backpack.

“Where do you think you're going?”

“Lily's leaving with me.”

Denise crossed her arms.

“And where exactly are you taking her?”

“My sister's house.”

Her face changed.

“Patricia?”

“Yes.”

Denise laughed bitterly.

“Of course. Your precious sister.”

Patricia had never liked Denise.

At least, that was what Denise claimed.

In reality, Patricia had questioned the way Denise treated Lily from the beginning.

She had noticed Lily becoming quieter.

She had noticed her old clothes.

She had noticed how my daughter stopped smiling when Denise entered a room.

Patricia had tried to tell me.

And I had defended my wife.

The memory made me ashamed.

“Marcus, don't make a scene,” Denise said.

I stared at her.

“You already made one.”

Tasha suddenly stepped forward.

“Marcus, Mom didn't mean anything bad.”

I looked at her.

“Did you know where the shopping money came from?”

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

Maya started crying.

Denise immediately pulled her closer.

“Look what you're doing to my children!”

I looked at Lily.

She stood beside me, silently wiping her cheeks.

“Your children?” I repeated.

Denise froze.

“You keep saying that.”

“Marcus—”

“My children. Your daughter. Your precious Lily.”

I shook my head.

“We were supposed to be one family.”

Denise looked away.

I walked toward the front door.

Behind me, she shouted, “If you leave now, don't expect me to apologize!”

I stopped.

Then I turned around.

“I don't want an apology tonight.”

She stared at me.

“I want the truth.”

I opened the door and took Lily outside.

She walked close to me all the way to my truck.

When I helped her into the passenger seat, she looked up.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Am I in trouble?”

My heart broke.

“No.”

“Are you going to take me back?”

I knelt beside the open door.

“Not while you're unsafe.”

She searched my face.

“Promise?”

I took her little hand.

“Promise.”

She nodded.

Then, for the first time that afternoon, her shoulders relaxed.

I buckled her seat belt.

And before driving away, I looked back at the house.

The place I had worked so hard to buy.

The place where I believed my daughter was growing up surrounded by love.

It suddenly looked unfamiliar.

Twenty minutes later, Patricia opened her front door.

She took one look at Lily and rushed forward.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

Lily ran into her arms.

My sister held her tightly.

Then she looked at me.

“What happened?”

I couldn't answer immediately.

Patricia saw my face.

Her expression changed.

“Marcus?”

I swallowed.

“I think I've made a terrible mistake.”

She stepped aside.

“Come inside.”

That evening, Patricia made Lily her favorite chicken soup.

She gave her clean pajamas.

Then she helped her settle into the guest bedroom.

Lily asked if I would stay nearby.

I promised I would.

After she fell asleep, Patricia and I sat at the kitchen table.

I told her everything.

The missing money.

The expensive clothes.

The cleaning.

The withheld meals.

The locked bedroom.

And the memory card.

Patricia cried quietly.

When I finished, she looked at me.

“I tried to tell you.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“Marcus, I wasn't trying to interfere with your marriage.”

“I know.”

“I was worried about that little girl.”

My voice cracked.

“So was I. I just didn't realize how much I should have been.”

She reached for my hand.

“Then do something now.”

I took out my laptop.

With a card reader Patricia found in Samuel's desk, I carefully opened a copy of the video.

The recording began inside our kitchen.

The camera angle was low.

It appeared Lily had placed her tablet against a stack of cookbooks.

I saw Denise standing near the island.

Tasha and Maya sat at the breakfast bar.

And Lily stood beside the sink.

She was wearing her school uniform.

A plate of toast sat in front of her.

Denise pointed toward the dishwasher.

“You haven't finished.”

Lily's tiny voice answered.

“I'm hungry.”

Denise crossed her arms.

“Then finish your work.”

“But I have school.”

“Don't argue with me.”

I felt my jaw tighten.

The video continued.

Tasha laughed at something on her phone.

Maya reached for another pancake.

Lily quietly started loading dishes.

Then Denise said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Your father thinks you're spoiled enough already.”

Lily looked up.

“Daddy doesn't think that.”

Denise smiled.

“He does. He told me he's tired of you acting like a baby.”

I covered my mouth.

On the screen, Lily began crying.

And Denise leaned closer.

“If you tell him anything, he'll send you away.”

I couldn't breathe.

Then the video showed Denise taking Lily's plate.

My daughter reached for it.

“Please.”

Denise placed it in the trash.

“Maybe tomorrow you'll learn.”

Patricia made a broken sound beside me.

I paused the video.

My hands were shaking.

But there was more.

The final seconds showed Denise noticing the tablet.

Her face changed instantly.

“What is that?”

The camera moved violently.

Lily screamed.

Then the recording ended.

I sat motionless.

My sister was crying.

I couldn't speak.

For the first time, I had seen exactly what my daughter was afraid of.

And the woman responsible was my wife.

I reached for my phone.

Then stopped.

I wasn't going to call Denise.

I was going to call someone who could help me protect Lily properly.

But before I could dial, my phone lit up.

A message from an unfamiliar number.

Marcus, there's more you need to know about Denise.

I stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

She didn't just steal Lily's money.

Then a photograph appeared.

It showed Denise standing outside a bank beside a man I had never seen before.

Underneath were four words.
