Chapter 2

The video began with my mother standing beside the kitchen doorway.
It was 12:43 p.m.
Yesterday.
I remembered the time because Vanessa had called me during my lunch break.
She said she was relaxing at home and that Mom was having a wonderful afternoon.
I had smiled when I heard that.
Now I watched the recording with my heart pounding.
Vanessa appeared from the hallway carrying a blue bucket.
She placed it at my mother's feet.
Then she dropped a cleaning cloth onto the floor.
"Get started," she said.
The camera recorded sound.
Every word was painfully clear.
Mom looked down at the bucket.
"My knees are hurting today."
Vanessa sighed.
"Your knees are always hurting."
"Could I use the mop?"
"No. The mop leaves streaks."
Mom hesitated.
"I can clean the kitchen after I rest."
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You don't make the rules here."
I felt my jaw tighten.
On the screen, my mother lowered herself slowly to the floor.
She gripped the sofa for support.
Vanessa watched without helping.
Then she returned to the couch.
I couldn't breathe.
My mother had spent decades taking care of other people.
She helped patients walk when their legs were weak.
She brought warm blankets to frightened children.
She worked nights so I could attend college.
And now the woman who shared my bed was treating her like unpaid labor.
"Marcus," Vanessa whispered.
I ignored her.
The video continued.
Mom scrubbed the floor for nearly fifteen minutes.
Then she stopped.
She placed one hand against her knee.
"Vanessa, could I have some water?"
My wife didn't look up from her phone.
"When you finish."
I felt anger rise through my chest.
Mom began crying beside me.
"Please turn it off."
I looked at her.
"Mom, I need to know what happened."
She nodded weakly.
The recording continued.
Vanessa stood and walked toward the refrigerator.
She poured herself a glass of lemonade.
Then she sat down again.
Mom watched her.
"Could I please have a little?"
Vanessa laughed.
"You know where the kitchen is."
Mom tried to stand.
She couldn't.
Her knee gave way.
She caught herself against the sofa.
Vanessa didn't move.
Instead, she said something I would remember for the rest of my life.
"If you're too old to be useful, maybe Marcus should find somewhere else for you."
I stopped the video.
My hands were shaking.
I looked at my wife.
"How could you?"
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
"She asked you for water."
"Marcus—"
"She couldn't stand!"
"It wasn't that serious."
I took one step toward her.
"Not serious?"
Vanessa backed away.
I stopped immediately.
I didn't want anger to make me someone I couldn't recognize.
But my voice was trembling.
"My mother raised me alone after my father died. She worked herself sick to keep food on our table. And you couldn't even bring her a glass of water?"
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You're only seeing one afternoon."
I stared at her.
"One afternoon?"
"Yes."
I opened the recordings menu.
"Then let's see the others."
Her eyes widened.
"Marcus, stop."
I selected Tuesday.
The camera showed Vanessa handing Mom a laundry basket overflowing with clothes.
Mom carried it carefully toward the stairs.
I watched her struggle under its weight.
Then I selected Monday.
Vanessa made Mom stand in the kitchen washing dishes while she entertained two friends.
My mother smiled politely when the women spoke to her.
But after they left, Vanessa ordered her to clean the bathroom.
I kept watching.
Sunday.
Saturday.
Friday.
Every recording showed a different humiliation.
And every recording showed the same woman pretending to be loving when I returned home.
I felt as though someone had opened a door beneath my feet.
Everything I believed about my marriage was falling through it.
"How long?" I asked.
Vanessa looked away.
"Marcus—"
"How long have you been doing this?"
Mom answered quietly.
"Since the second week I moved in."
I closed my eyes.
Almost three months.
Three months of abuse inside my own home.
Three months of my mother suffering while I kissed my wife goodbye each morning.
I looked at Mom.
"Why didn't you call me?"
She began crying harder.
"She said you'd believe her."
My chest ached.
I moved toward her and wrapped my arms around her shoulders.
"Never."
She clung to me.
"I didn't want to lose you."
"You could never lose me."
Behind us, Vanessa made an irritated sound.
"This is unbelievable."
I turned.
"What did you say?"
"You're acting like I committed some terrible crime."
I stared at her.
"You're still defending yourself?"
"Your mother exaggerates everything!"
Mom stepped back.
Vanessa pointed toward her.
"Ask her why she was snooping around my bedroom!"
I froze.
"What?"
Mom looked frightened.
"I wasn't snooping."
Vanessa laughed.
"Then why were you touching my things?"
Mom shook her head.
"I was putting away your laundry."
"Because you went through my drawers!"
I looked from one woman to the other.
Something about Vanessa's anger felt different.
She wasn't only angry about the recordings.
She was frightened.
Of something else.
I looked at Mom.
"Did you find something?"
She hesitated.
Vanessa immediately said, "No, she didn't."
Mom's eyes filled again.
I gently touched her shoulder.
"You can tell me."
She looked toward Vanessa.
Then whispered, "I found a folder."
My stomach tightened.
"What folder?"
"It had your name on it."
Vanessa stepped forward.
"That's private."
I raised my hand.
"Stop."
Mom continued.
"There were papers about the house."
I frowned.
"Our house?"
She nodded.
"And there was a letter from a lawyer."
Vanessa's face went pale again.
I looked directly at her.
"What lawyer?"
She forced a laugh.
"Some old documents. It's nothing."
I had heard that word too many times.
Nothing.
My mother's pain was nothing.
Her humiliation was nothing.
And apparently, secret legal documents were nothing too.
"Where is the folder?" I asked.
Vanessa stared at me.
"I threw it away."
Mom shook her head.
"No."
We both turned.
Mom reached into the pocket of her dark pants.
Her trembling fingers pulled out a small folded receipt.
"I didn't take the folder," she said.
"But I remembered the name."
She handed me the receipt.
On the back, written carefully in blue ink, were four words.
Harrison Property Transfer Services.
I stared at the name.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
May you like
Her lips parted.
And suddenly, I knew the cruelty I had witnessed might be only one part of something much bigger.
