Surprise

Chapter 6

Police reached the abandoned church before sunrise.

Marcus was ordered to stay away.

He ignored the order until I threatened to leave.

That stopped him.

We waited at the Cedar Ridge police station.

Ava remained safely with Mrs. Jenkins.

Every minute felt unbearable.

At 5:42 a.m., Officer Grant called.

“We found her.”

Marcus stood so quickly his chair fell.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

His knees nearly buckled.

“Is she hurt?”

“She’s dehydrated and exhausted.”

“Can I see her?”

“Not yet.”

I covered my mouth.

Claire was alive.

After eight years.

Alive.

Marcus cried without sound.

He leaned against the wall and slid down until he was sitting on the floor.

I knelt beside him.

“She’s alive.”

He nodded over and over.

“I thought she was dead.”

“I know.”

“I stopped looking.”

“You were told she was dead.”

“I should have known.”

“Marcus.”

He looked at me.

“This part isn’t about punishing yourself.”

He closed his eyes.

“It’s about her.”

“Yes.”

Claire had been found hiding inside the church basement.

She told police someone had broken into her house two nights earlier.

She escaped through a bathroom window.

The intruder never found her.

She believed Richard Hale had returned.

But Hale was already in federal custody.

That meant someone else was involved.

Someone we hadn’t identified.

Claire spent the next several hours at a hospital.

Detectives questioned her carefully.

By afternoon, they allowed Marcus to see her.

He asked me to come.

“I shouldn’t.”

“Please.”

“This is between you and Claire.”

“She knows your name.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She asked who found Ava.”

My chest tightened.

“And?”

“I told her.”

I went.

Claire looked smaller than I expected.

Thin.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

A bruise along one cheek from climbing out the window.

Nothing severe.

But fear lived in her eyes.

When Marcus entered, she stared at him.

Neither spoke.

Eight years stood between them.

He stopped several feet from the bed.

“Claire.”

Her lips trembled.

“You got old.”

Marcus laughed through tears.

“So did you.”

She started crying.

Then he did.

I quietly turned toward the door.

Claire noticed.

“Danielle?”

I froze.

She held out her hand.

“You found her?”

“Yes.”

“Come here.”

I walked closer.

She squeezed my fingers.

“Thank you.”

Those two words nearly broke me.

“I just heard her knocking.”

“You listened.”

I looked down.

“So many people didn’t.”

Marcus sat beside the bed.

Claire looked at him.

“Is Ava safe?”

“Yes.”

“Does Evelyn have access to her?”

“No.”

“Promise me.”

“I promise.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Relief softened her face.

Then she whispered, “I failed her.”

“No,” I said.

She looked at me.

“I left her.”

“You tried to protect her.”

“I should have gone back.”

Marcus swallowed.

“You were being hunted.”

She looked at him.

“By your mother.”

He flinched.

“Yes.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“You believe me now?”

“I do.”

“You didn’t then.”

That landed exactly where it needed to.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“No.”

Claire cried quietly.

“I told you she threatened me.”

“I thought she was bluffing.”

“You always thought that.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He didn’t defend himself.

That mattered.

Claire then told us what really happened eight years earlier.

She had left Marcus while pregnant.

Evelyn found out.

She offered money.

Claire refused.

Then came threats.

Custody lawyers.

Private investigators.

Anonymous calls.

Claire moved.

Again and again.

After Ava was born, she kept hiding.

Nora secretly helped her.

Then Evelyn found the apartment.

“She came alone,” Claire said.

Marcus leaned forward.

“What happened?”

“She demanded Ava.”

My stomach tightened.

“I refused.”

“Then?”

“We argued near the stairs.”

Claire’s eyes went distant.

“She grabbed me.”

Marcus stopped breathing.

“I pulled away.”

She touched the side of her head.

“I fell.”

The room went silent.

“When I woke up, I was in a hospital under a false name.”

“What?”

Claire nodded.

“Richard Hale arranged it.”

Marcus looked horrified.

“He told doctors I was his niece.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother thought I was dead.”

That surprised us all.

Claire continued.

“Hale said Evelyn panicked after I fell.”

“She thought she killed you?”

“Yes.”

“He helped her cover it up?”

“At first.”

Claire explained Hale took her unconscious from the apartment.

He staged her car near the river using blood from the apartment.

Then guilt got to him.

Instead of killing her or returning her to Evelyn, he hid Claire in a private clinic.

When she recovered, he gave her money and told her to disappear forever.

“Why didn’t you get Ava?”

Claire started sobbing.

“Nora already had her.”

“You knew?”

“I contacted Nora secretly.”

Marcus looked confused.

“Then why stay away?”

“Because Hale warned me Evelyn was watching Nora.”

Claire covered her face.

“I thought if I came near Ava, Evelyn would find her.”

For years, Claire sent postcards.

Then Hale found her again.

This time, he claimed Evelyn was still searching.

Claire kept running.

“Why stop the postcards?” I asked.

“Because someone intercepted one.”

Her face changed.

“How did you know?”

“Nora received a copy with a message written underneath.”

My skin prickled.

“What message?”

Claire whispered, “Stop writing or the girl dies.”

Marcus went white.

“From my mother?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t think so.”

“What?”

“She used different language.”

That terrified me more.

“Then who?”

Claire looked toward the door.

“I think Evelyn had help.”

The police already suspected that.

Someone had broken into Claire’s Cedar Ridge house while Hale was in custody.

Someone who knew where she lived.

Claire reached toward her bedside table.

Officer Grant had allowed her to keep a photograph found in her house.

She handed it to Marcus.

It showed Evelyn at a charity gala.

Beside her stood a man I recognized instantly.

I had seen him at the mansion party.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Friendly smile.

One of the wealthiest guests there.

Senator William Cross.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“What about him?”

Claire whispered.

“He paid Hale.”

Marcus looked up.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Why would a senator care about Ava?”

Claire’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because Ava wasn’t the only secret Evelyn was protecting.”

Silence filled the room.

Claire squeezed my hand.

“Eight years ago, Evelyn wasn’t just hiding my pregnancy.”

She looked at Marcus.

“She was hiding what your father discovered before he died.”

Marcus went completely still.

“My father died of a heart attack.”

Claire shook her head.

May you like

“No.”

And once again, the story we thought we understood broke open into something much bigger.
