Chapter 8: The Man My Father Trusted Most
The phone fell silent.
But my mother’s last words remained.
*Do not trust Bear.*
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The underground room that had once felt like my father’s greatest secret now felt like a trap.
Every wall.
Every file.
Every person.
Everything had become a question.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Bear was standing in front of me.
The same man who had protected my father.
The same man who had carried my father’s secrets.
The same man who had brought me here.
And now my mother had warned me about him.
“Emily…”
I stepped back.
His face changed immediately.
Not anger.
Not guilt.
Pain.
That made it worse.
Because guilty people could look afraid.
People who were innocent could look hurt.
And I no longer knew which one I was seeing.
“Say something,” I whispered.
Bear looked at the floor.
“What do you want me to say?””
“The truth.””
He looked at me.
“I’ve been trying to give you the truth all night.””
I laughed softly.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’ve been giving me pieces.””
The others remained silent.
Lucas looked between us.
Frank looked uncomfortable.
Nobody wanted to stand between us.
Good.
Because this was something I needed to hear from Bear.
“You knew my father was alive.””
The question came out slowly.
Bear froze.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“You knew.””
“Emily…”
“You knew.””
His silence confirmed it.
I felt something break inside me.
Not because he had lied.
I was almost used to that.
Because I had started trusting him.
That was the part that hurt.
“I spent five years visiting a grave.””
My voice shook.
“I spent five years apologizing to someone who wasn’t even there.””
Bear closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
“Don’t.””
I looked away.
“Everyone is sorry after.””
A long silence followed.
Then Frank spoke.
“Emily, you don’t understand what Ethan asked us to do.””
I turned.
“Then explain.””
Frank looked at Bear.
Bear nodded slightly.
Frank sighed.
“The night Ethan disappeared, he made us promise something.””
“What?””
“That if anything happened to him, we would protect two things.””
I waited.
“You.””
“And?””
Frank looked at the files.
“The truth.””
I frowned.
“Then why hide it from me?””
“Because Ethan believed the truth was more dangerous than ignorance.””
I shook my head.
“That’s convenient.””
Frank didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
It sounded like an excuse.
Bear stepped forward.
“Your mother is right about one thing.””
I looked at him.
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“You shouldn’t trust anyone blindly.””
The words surprised me.
Including you?
He didn’t say it.
But I heard it.
Bear continued.
“Not me.””
A pause.
“Not Frank.””
He looked at Lucas.
“Not anyone.””
The room became silent.
“Because your father didn’t create this place to protect himself.””
He pointed at the walls.
“He created it because he knew one day you would need to decide who deserved your trust.””
I looked around.
The underground room.
The files.
The hidden evidence.
My father had planned everything.
But there was one thing I couldn’t understand.
Why would he trust Bear with so much…
and then leave a warning that made me question him?
I walked toward the desk.
The old computer screen was still open.
My father’s files were everywhere.
I searched through the folders.
Documents.
Videos.
Records.
Then I found something.
A file hidden inside another folder.
No name.
No date.
Just one symbol.
A ghost.
I clicked it.
A video opened.
But this time…
it wasn’t my father.
It was Bear.
Five years younger.
Sitting in this exact room.
My breath caught.
Bear on the screen looked different.
Younger.
Tired.
Afraid.
I turned slowly.
Everyone looked at the monitor.
Nobody knew this existed.
The video began.
“Ethan.””
Bear’s voice came from the speakers.
“I don’t know if you’re going to see this.””
My heart raced.
He was talking to my father.
“I found out who the leak is.””
The room froze.
Bear continued.
“I should have told you sooner.””
Present-day Bear stared at the screen.
His face had gone pale.
“I thought I could fix it.””
The younger Bear looked down.
“But I was wrong.””
He leaned closer.
“The person giving Black Ridge information…”
A pause.
“He’s inside your circle.””
I looked at Bear.
Then back at the screen.
The younger version of him continued.
“I’m sorry.””
A tear moved down his face.
“I know what you’ll think.””
The video glitched.
Then returned.
“But I swear to you, Ethan…”
His voice cracked.
“I never betrayed you.””
The screen went black.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Bear.
“What was that?””
He didn’t answer.
“Bear.””
He looked away.
“I recorded that after I discovered the truth.””
“What truth?””
His jaw tightened.
“That Victor wasn’t working alone.””
The room became colder.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Who else?””
Bear didn’t answer.
“Who else?””
He looked at the photograph of my family.
Then said:
“Your father never found out.””
That sentence terrified me.
Because if my father didn’t know…
then someone had been hiding for five years.
Someone had been watching.
Someone had been waiting.
Lucas suddenly moved toward the computer.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
“There’s another file.””
He pointed.
A hidden folder appeared.
It had been created after the video.
The name was:
*FINAL DECISION*
Bear’s face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He stepped forward.
“Ethan never showed me that folder.””
I opened it.
Inside was one audio file.
No video.
No image.
Just a recording.
I pressed play.
Static.
Then my father’s voice.
“Bear.””
Everyone froze.
It sounded like he was speaking directly to him.
“If you are hearing this, then I already know what happened.””
A pause.
“I know you found the traitor.””
Bear looked shaken.
My father continued.
“But there is something you need to understand.””
The recording became clearer.
“The person you think betrayed me…”
A pause.
“Is not the person you should fear.””
I looked at Bear.
The message continued.
“Bear, you have always protected people you love.””
The room was silent.
“That is your greatest strength.””
A pause.
“And your greatest weakness.””
Bear’s face changed.
My father continued.
“You will believe someone can change because you want them to.””
The recording stopped for a second.
Then:
“Do not make that mistake again.””
The file ended.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Bear.
“What did he mean?””
Bear looked destroyed.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
He rubbed his face.
“I thought he was talking about Victor.””
“Was he?””
Bear didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know.
For the first time since I met him…
Bear looked lost.
A loud noise interrupted us.
Everyone turned.
Something moved above.
Footsteps.
Someone was in the garage.
Bear immediately grabbed his weapon.
“How did they find us?””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Then the lights went out.
Total darkness.
I heard movement.
Fast.
Close.
Someone grabbed my arm.
I tried to pull away.
A hand covered my mouth.
“Don’t scream.””
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
Not from memories.
Not from recordings.
From tonight.
Victor.
He whispered near my ear.
“I told you your father lied.””
I struggled.
He held me still.
“Listen to me.””
The others were shouting somewhere in the darkness.
“Bear is not the person you should fear.””
My blood ran cold.
Because those were almost the same words my father had recorded.
Victor continued.
“The reason your father disappeared…”
A pause.
“Is because he discovered who was really behind everything.””
I pushed his hand away.
“You?””
He laughed quietly.
“No.””
The lights suddenly flickered back on.
And Victor was gone.
But he left something behind.
A small envelope on the desk.
Everyone saw it.
Bear approached first.
“No.””
He looked terrified.
I opened it before he could stop me.
Inside was one piece of paper.
One sentence.
Written in my father’s handwriting.
My hands began shaking.
Because I knew that handwriting.
I knew every curve.
Every line.
Every mark.
It said:
*Emily, if you are reading this, then Bear failed to protect you from the truth.*
My heart stopped.
Below it was another sentence.
May you like
And this one changed everything.
*The man you called my friend was the reason I had to disappear.*
