Surprise

Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Lie

“The man sitting beside you is the reason I disappeared.””

Emily’s words stayed in the air long after the call ended.

I didn't hear the road.

I didn't hear the engine.

I didn't hear Sophie breathing softly against my chest.

All I heard was that sentence.

The man sitting beside you.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Reed was staring straight ahead.

His hands were still on the steering wheel.

Too still.

“Daniel.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

That told me everything.

“You knew.””

Vanessa shook her head immediately.

“No.””

“Don't.””

“I didn't know everything.””

“You knew enough.””

“I knew he was involved.””

The words hit like a punch.

I turned toward Reed.

“You were involved.””

He didn't deny it.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Don't say my name like you haven't spent the entire night lying to me.””

Reed swallowed.

“I never said I was innocent.””

“You let me believe you saved her.””

“I did save her.””

“You took her first.””

His silence answered.

I felt something inside me break.

Emily.

Alive.

Somewhere.

For two years, she had been trapped because of him.

I looked at Sophie.

My daughter was still asleep.

She had no idea that the people around her had turned her entire life into a battlefield.

I lowered my voice.

“Pull over.””

Reed glanced at me.

“Daniel.””

“Pull over.””

“We can't stop.””

“Then I'll make you stop.””

I reached for the door handle.

Vanessa gasped.

“Daniel!””

The car immediately slowed.

Reed pulled onto the side of the road.

The headlights illuminated an empty stretch of highway.

Dark trees surrounded us.

Nobody spoke.

I opened the door.

Cold air rushed inside.

I stepped out.

Then I turned back.

“Get out.””

Reed stared at me.

“Daniel.””

“Get out of the car.””

“You don't understand what happens if we separate.””

“I understand enough.””

“You'll be walking into a trap.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean like the one you put Emily in?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Pain.

Regret.

Maybe guilt.

It didn't matter.

“Get out.””

He slowly opened the driver's door.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Michael…”

He looked back at her.

“You knew.””

She started crying.

“I knew you were hiding something.””

“You knew enough to warn him.””

“I was scared.””

“You should have been.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Neither answered.

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Reed looked at me.

“It means Vanessa wasn't the only person being controlled.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He glanced at her.

“She was given instructions.””

“By who?””

“By the same people who gave me mine.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You were both working for them.””

“Yes.””

“But you weren't working together.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked away.

I studied her.

The woman I had married.

The woman I had trusted with my daughter.

The woman I thought I knew.

“How did you meet him?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“Through my sister.””

I froze.

“Your missing sister?””

She nodded.

“She worked for Westbrook.””

“And?””

“She found out what they were doing.””

“What happened?””

“She disappeared.””

“And that's when they recruited you?””

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“So they threatened you into marrying me.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

All those memories.

The first date.

The first time she met Sophie.

The night I proposed.

Was any of it real?

“Did you ever love me?””

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

I waited.

“At the beginning.””

That answer hurt more than if she had lied.

“Then when did it change?””

“When I learned the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That Sophie wasn't just a child they wanted.””

I looked at her.

“She was a key.””

“A key to what?””

Vanessa looked at Reed.

He answered.

“Your father's research.””

I shook my head.

“I don't understand.””

“Your father discovered something.””

“What?””

“That certain genetic patterns could predict disease resistance.””

“So?””

“So Westbrook wanted control of it.””

I stared.

“And Sophie?””

“She inherited the same pattern.””

My chest tightened.

“Because of Emily?””

“Yes.””

“And the other baby?””

Reed looked away.

“Because of Emily.””

The answer bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

He didn't respond.

I stepped toward him.

“You don't get to give me half answers anymore.””

He nodded slowly.

“You're right.””

For the first time, he sounded tired.

Not controlled.

Not confident.

Just tired.

“Emily wasn't supposed to have twins.””

“What?””

“The pregnancy records were altered.””

“By who?””

“Westbrook.””

“Why?””

“Because the second child showed stronger compatibility.””

I stared.

“Compatibility with what?””

“With the research.””

I shook my head.

“This sounds impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then prove it.””

Reed reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a medical report.

I unfolded it.

At the top was a name.

*Emma Bennett.*

My hands began shaking.

Below it:

*Genetic Compatibility Assessment.*

I scanned the page.

Most of it was medical language I didn't understand.

But one sentence stood out.

*Subject demonstrates rare inherited markers from both maternal and paternal lineage.*

Paternal.

I looked at Reed.

“Paternal lineage.””

He nodded.

“Your father had the same markers.””

I looked back at the report.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What are you saying?””

“That your family was connected to this before you were born.””

I felt dizzy.

My entire life.

My company.

My father.

My daughters.

Everything.

“Why didn't my father tell me?””

“Because he tried to destroy the research.””

“Then why didn't he?””

“Because he died before he could.””

I stared.

“You're saying my father's death wasn't an accident.””

Reed didn't answer.

That was enough.

I took a step back.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I looked at both of them.

“No more secrets.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang again.

Emily.

I answered immediately.

“Emily?””

Her breathing was shaky.

“Daniel.””

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Not you too.””

“Listen to me.””

“No. I need answers.””

“I know.””

“Where were you?””

A pause.

Then:

“In a facility.””

“Which facility?””

“Westbrook.””

My blood ran cold.

“How did you escape?””

Silence.

“Emily?””

“I didn't.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

“I was released.””

“By who?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at Reed.

He was watching me carefully.

“Emily, what does that mean?””

“It means someone wanted me to find you.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

Her voice broke.

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

“Michael Reed is dangerous.””

I looked at him.

“He says he saved you.””

A long silence.

Then Emily whispered:

“He saved me from dying.””

My heart slowed.

“But he was also the person who brought me there.””

I looked at Reed.

He closed his eyes.

“Why?””

Emily's voice shook.

“Because he was my doctor.””

The words hit.

Doctor.

The same title Sophie used.

The same man who sat at our dining table.

The same man connected to everything.

“He treated you?””

“Yes.””

“During pregnancy?””

“Yes.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Was he Sophie's doctor?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

I looked at Sophie.

The room felt colder.

“He knew her before I did.””

“Yes.””

My voice dropped.

“And Emma?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

I felt my heart crack.

“Was Emma alive when you disappeared?””

Emily started crying.

“Yes.””

“Where is she?””

“I don't know.””

“What?””

“They took her.””

My vision blurred.

“They took my daughter.””

My daughter.

The words hurt.

Because I realized something.

I had spent two years grieving one child.

Protecting one child.

While another had been taken from me.

Emily continued:

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Michael didn't do this alone.””

I looked at Reed.

“Who else?””

“Someone close to you.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“Emily.””

“I never saw their face.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because they knew things only one person knew.””

“What things?””

“Things about your marriage.””

The line went quiet.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

“Emily.””

“Yes?””

“Was it Vanessa?””

A long pause.

Then Emily whispered:

“I don't know.””

That answer somehow hurt worse.

I turned away.

“Why don't you know?””

“Because Vanessa wasn't the only woman they brought near you.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“There was another.””

“Who?””

Emily hesitated.

Then:

“Her name was Rachel.””

I froze.

Rachel.

I knew that name.

Not personally.

But from my company.

Rachel Collins.

My father's former assistant.

She had worked for my family for twenty-five years.

She had helped me after my father died.

She had been like family.

“She died.””

Emily's voice became quiet.

“No, Daniel.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“She didn't.””

My stomach dropped.

“She disappeared.””

I remembered.

Rachel had resigned suddenly six months before my wedding.

She said she wanted retirement.

I hadn't questioned it.

Why would I?

She had been there my entire life.

Emily continued.

“She was the one who warned me.””

“About what?””

“About you.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

“She told me that if anything happened to her, I should never trust the people around you.””

I looked at Reed.

Then Vanessa.

“Who was she afraid of?””

Emily whispered:

“Your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Daniel, your father wasn't trying to destroy Westbrook.””

I couldn't move.

“He created it.””

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

“What are you saying?””

“Your father started the program.””

“No.””

“He was one of the founders.””

“No.””

“He believed it could save lives.””

I felt sick.

“Then what happened?””

“He realized they were using it differently.””

“For what?””

“For controlling people.””

I looked at Reed.

He was silent.

“You knew.””

Reed nodded.

“I found out later.””

“You knew my father was involved.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“I didn't know if you were part of it.””

The anger returned.

“You thought I was?””

“I didn't know.””

“I raised my daughter.””

“I know.””

“I loved Emily.””

“I know.””

“I spent two years believing she was dead.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

I wanted to hate him.

But I couldn't ignore one thing.

He had helped me tonight.

He had risked himself.

That didn't erase what he did.

But it complicated everything.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Not from Emily.

Not from an unknown number.

From my company's security system.

*EMERGENCY ALERT: Unauthorized access detected at Bennett Family Workshop.*

I stared.

The workshop.

My father's old workshop.

Reed saw my face.

“What happened?””

I showed him.

His expression changed instantly.

“They found it.””

“What?””

“The recording.””

“What recording?””

“The one Emily left.””

I looked at him.

“Then we go there.””

“No.””

I stared.

“What?””

“We don't.””

“Why?””

“Because they want you to.””

I laughed.

“Everyone wants me to do something.””

“Yes.””

“Then what do you suggest?””

He looked at me.

“Go somewhere they don't expect.””

“Where?””

He hesitated.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I know.””

We all looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“I know where Emily wanted Daniel to go.””

I stared.

“How?””

“She told me.””

“When?””

“Before our wedding.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa.””

“I know.””

“No more lies.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

She took a breath.

“She gave me something.””

“What?””

“A key.””

My heart stopped.

“Where is it?””

Vanessa reached into her pocket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She pulled out a small silver key.

I stared.

“You had that the whole time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily told me if anything happened, I had to give it to you.””

“Why didn't you?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“That whoever was watching you…”

She looked at Reed.

“…was watching me too.””

The road was silent.

The four of us stood there.

Two people who betrayed me.

One woman who had been stolen from me.

And one child who deserved none of this.

I looked at the key.

Then at the darkness ahead.

“Where does it lead?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“To your father's grave.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Emily said the truth was hidden there.””

Reed suddenly looked alarmed.

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“She wouldn't.””

“Wouldn't what?””

He looked at me.

“Hide it there.””

“Why?””

“Because if they find out…”

He stopped.

“If they find out what?””

Reed looked toward the empty road.

Then whispered:

“Your father's grave isn't empty.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, headlights appeared in the distance.

Multiple vehicles.

Coming fast.

Reed's expression changed.

“They found us.””

Vanessa grabbed Sophie's hand.

“What do we do?””

I looked at the approaching lights.

Then at the silver key in my palm.

For the first time all night, I wasn't running from the truth.

I was running toward it.

I opened the car door.

“Get in.””

Reed looked at me.

“Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“I don't trust you.””

He nodded.

“But?””

I looked at Sophie.

“But I need answers.””

The vehicles were getting closer.

I started the engine.

And as we disappeared into the darkness, my phone received one final message.

This time, there was a name attached.

*Rachel Collins.*

May you like

The message contained only six words.

*Daniel, don't trust your father.*
