Surprise

Chapter 3

Amanda’s phone gave us the man’s name before sunrise.

Kyle Mercer.

Insurance broker.

Former pharmacist.

Amanda’s ex-boyfriend.

Current lover.

Detective Harris told me in a hospital conference room while Sophie slept against Grace’s shoulder and Ethan sat beside Mrs. Alvarez with a carton of chocolate milk he had not touched.

Kyle had sold me the new life insurance policy after Amanda insisted we “protect the family.”

He had smiled across our dining table.

Called Sophie adorable.

Told me widowed fathers often forgot to protect themselves.

I remembered shaking his hand.

I wanted to break it now.

Detective Harris placed printed messages on the table.

Amanda to Kyle:

Michael took the pills today. Still dizzy.

Kyle:

Keep the dose steady. Accident needs to look cardiac.

Amanda:

Sophie first. Her trust changes next week.

Kyle:

Then balcony before birthday. Make it look like she climbed.

I stood so fast the chair hit the wall.

Grace caught my arm.

“Michael.”

My vision blurred.

“She planned the day.”

“Yes,” Detective Harris said.

“She planned my daughter’s fall around her birthday.”

Her voice softened.

“Yes.”

I turned away because if I looked at those messages again, I might do something stupid.

Rage is easy.

Staying useful is harder.

I forced myself to sit.

“Where is Kyle?”

“Being picked up.”

“What about Amanda?”

“In custody. Her attorney is already claiming postpartum depression, stress, confusion.”

Ethan looked up sharply.

“She always says that.”

Everyone turned to him.

His small hands clenched around the milk carton.

“When she does bad things, she says she was confused.”

Detective Harris lowered her voice.

“Ethan, has your mother hurt you?”

He looked at Mrs. Alvarez.

She nodded gently.

He whispered, “Not like Sophie.”

That answer made my stomach sink.

“What did she do?” I asked.

Ethan looked at me, then away.

“She locked me in closets when I was little. She said my dad left because I cried too much. She said if I told people, they’d send me to him and he’d hate me too.”

Mrs. Alvarez put a hand over her mouth.

I felt sick.

Amanda had not become cruel for money.

She had always been cruel.

Money only gave her a plan.

Detective Harris asked, “Did she ever talk about Kyle?”

Ethan nodded.

“He came when you traveled.”

The room went silent.

“How often?” I asked.

“A lot.”

Grace’s eyes hardened.

“At the house?”

Ethan nodded.

“He slept in your room.”

I looked down at my wedding ring.

Suddenly it felt filthy.

I pulled it off and placed it on the table.

Ethan watched.

“Are you mad at me?”

My head snapped up.

“No.”

“I didn’t tell.”

“You showed the video.”

“But before.”

I crouched in front of him despite the pain in my ribs.

“Amanda is the adult. Kyle is the adult. I am the adult who should have noticed. You are a child. None of this is your fault.”

His face crumpled.

“She said I was a traitor.”

“She lied.”

“She said Sophie stole you.”

I closed my eyes.

“She lied about that too.”

Ethan whispered, “I like Sophie.”

“I know.”

“She calls me Efan.”

A small laugh broke through my tears.

“She does.”

He wiped his face.

“Can I stay with her?”

I looked at Detective Harris.

“What happens to Ethan?”

She sighed.

“Child protective services will need to locate his biological father or other legal guardian. For now, he can remain in emergency protective placement.”

“With me?”

“Possibly. But you are not his legal parent.”

Ethan heard that.

His face closed.

I turned to him quickly.

“Ethan. Listen to me. I don’t know what papers say yet. But I am not walking away from you.”

His chin trembled.

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

Grace touched my shoulder.

“We’ll get a lawyer for him too.”

By midmorning, Kyle was arrested at his apartment.

Police found pill bottles.

Insurance paperwork.

Copies of Sophie’s trust summary.

A burner phone.

And a file labeled M. Accident.

M for Michael.

Inside were notes about my travel schedule, heart medication, and likely symptoms.

It was not an affair gone wrong.

It was a murder plan with columns.

Amanda refused to speak after Kyle’s arrest.

Kyle did not.

Men like him always think cooperation can save them after cruelty fails.

He told police Amanda believed she was “owed” a better life.

He said she hated raising another woman’s child.

He said she planned to frame Ethan if necessary.

That last part came from Detective Harris in a private hallway.

I had to put one hand against the wall.

“She would blame her own son?”

“She already started. She told officers Ethan had been jealous of Sophie.”

I looked through the glass at Ethan sitting beside Sophie’s bed.

Sophie had woken and was showing him her stuffed bunny.

He smiled faintly.

A ten-year-old boy who saved a toddler from his mother’s lie.

Amanda had been ready to destroy him too.

That afternoon, Sophie woke crying from a nightmare.

“No fall,” she sobbed. “No fall.”

I climbed carefully into the bed beside her.

My ribs screamed.

I did not care.

“I caught you.”

“Mommy dropped.”

I closed my eyes.

Amanda had forced that word into Sophie’s life.

Mommy.

But Laura was Sophie’s mother.

Laura, who sang off-key.

Laura, who cried the first time Sophie smiled.

Laura, who died when Sophie was eight months old and left behind a trust to protect her.

I whispered, “Amanda hurt you. She won’t hurt you again.”

Sophie clutched my shirt.

“Daddy catch?”

“Always.”

Ethan stood near the doorway.

His face was wet.

I held out one arm.

He hesitated.

Then came to us.

I wrapped my free arm around him.

For the first time, both children cried against me.

One by blood.

One by choice.

May you like

And I understood that saving Sophie from the fall was only the beginning.

Now I had to save both of them from everything Amanda had taught them to fear.
