Chapter 5

I read the message three times.
Serena is not his mistress.
She is Evelyn’s niece.
Check the birth certificate.
For a moment, the words made no sense.
Then they made too much sense.
Serena’s comfort in my house.
Evelyn’s protective hand on her back.
The way Daniel snapped at Serena but never truly dismissed her.
The way Evelyn gave orders and Serena obeyed.
I carried the phone to Grace’s bedroom.
She was awake before I knocked.
One look at my face and she sat up.
“What now?”
I handed her the phone.
She read the message and whispered, “Oh my God.”
“Did Daniel know?”
“That she’s Evelyn’s niece?”
“I don’t know.”
Grace threw off the blanket.
“Laptop.”
Within minutes, we were at the kitchen table searching public records.
Serena Miles was twenty-nine.
Born in Knoxville.
Mother listed as Patricia Miles.
Father unknown.
Patricia Miles.
Evelyn’s younger sister.
I had met Patricia once at a funeral.
She had the same sharp chin as Evelyn.
The same flat eyes.
