Surprise

Chapter 4

I ran.

I did not think.

I did not call for help first.

I ran down the hallway toward the stairwell beside Emily’s room because the photo angle came from there.

The door slammed open under my hand.

The stairwell was empty.

But I heard footsteps above me.

Fast.

I took the stairs two at a time.

“Stop!”

A man in a gray hoodie shoved through the fourth-floor exit.

I caught the door before it closed.

He was already halfway down the hall.

I saw his phone.

I saw the camera app still open.

Then he looked back.

It was my cousin Mark.

The same cousin who had texted me that morning.

The same cousin who lived rent-free in one of my father’s properties.

“Mark!”

He froze for one second.

Then bolted.

Security caught him by the elevators.

He shouted the whole time.

“I didn’t touch anybody!”

I grabbed his phone from the floor before he could kick it away.

There were three photos of Emily.

One of her medical chart.

One of our room number.

One message thread with my sister.

Chloe: Get proof she’s faking.

Mark: She looks bad.

Chloe: Then get the chart.

Mark: Daniel is here.

Chloe: Mom says do it.

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not cold.

Not furious.

Final.

Mark stopped shouting when he saw my face.

“Daniel, man, I just took pictures.”

“You took pictures of my injured pregnant wife for the people who injured her.”

He swallowed.

“Your mom said Emily was trying to steal the baby.”

The words were so insane I almost could not process them.

“Steal him from who?”

“The family.”

I stepped back because if I stayed close, I would do something I could not take back.

Security handed Mark to the police.

This time, I watched without saying a word.

When I returned to Emily’s room, she was sitting up, pale and shaking.

“Was someone outside?”

I told her the truth.

I was done hiding poison in softer words.

“It was Mark.”

Her eyes closed.

“I knew they wouldn’t stop.”

“They will.”

“How?”

I sat on the bed carefully.

“By letting everyone see exactly who they are.”

Emily looked scared.

“They’ll hate me.”

“Some of them already do.”

Her eyes opened.

I took her hand.

“But the ones who matter will know. And the ones who don’t know can decide after they see evidence.”

Marcus arrived an hour later with a court order, a private security plan, and a face that told me he had slept less than I had.

“I pulled the house footage,” he said.

Emily tensed.

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

He looked at her gently.

“It shows the assault. It shows Grant taking your phone. It shows Patricia placing the documents in front of you. It shows Chloe striking you.”

Emily pressed her hand to her mouth.

I asked, “Can we use it?”

“We already are.”

Marcus put a tablet on the tray.

“But there’s another recording you need to see.”

The footage started in our kitchen.

My father stood by the island.

My mother poured coffee.

Chloe paced.

The timestamp was one hour before I came home.

Chloe said, “What if she screams?”

My mother replied, “She’s pregnant. She’ll fold before that.”

My father said, “If Daniel comes early, we say she attacked Chloe.”

Chloe laughed.

Emily made a broken sound beside me.

I wanted to shut it off, but she grabbed my wrist.

“No. I need to hear it.”

On the screen, my mother slid the documents across the island.

“If she signs before birth, the money moves quietly. If not, we petition after Daniel is convinced she’s unstable.”

My father nodded.

“Hospital records help.”

I felt my body turn numb.

Emily whispered, “They were going to make me look crazy.”

Marcus paused the video.

“Yes.”

Emily looked at me.

“If you hadn’t come home…”

I could not breathe.

Because she was right.

If I had not forgotten my laptop, my wife might have signed under fear.

Or worse.

They might have hurt her enough to call it a crisis.

Enough to take our baby.

Enough to take everything.

A knock came at the door.

A detective entered.

“Mr. and Mrs. Cole?”

I stood.

“Yes.”

“We’ve upgraded the charges.”

Emily gripped the blanket.

The detective looked at her.

“Assault on a pregnant person. Coercion. Attempted financial exploitation. Unlawful restraint. Forgery is being reviewed.”

I nodded.

“Good.”

He hesitated.

“There’s more. Your sister is requesting to speak to you.”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“She says she has information about your parents.”

Emily spoke before I could.

“What information?”

The detective glanced at me.

“She says your mother told her the baby trust wasn’t the first trust they redirected.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus went still.

The detective said, “She claims there was another inheritance.”

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel.”

I already knew.

My grandmother had left Emily something.

A sealed letter.

A private gift.

Something Emily never received.

I turned to Marcus.

“Find it.”

He nodded.

The detective stepped back.

“Your sister says she’ll talk only if you come.”

Emily touched my arm.

“No.”

I looked at her.

She was bruised because I had trusted them.

She was afraid because I had minimized them.

Now she was asking me not to walk into another trap.

I kissed her hand.

“I’m not going for Chloe,” I said. “I’m going for the truth.”

May you like

Emily’s voice shook.

“Then don’t go alone.”
