Chapter 3

Dad arrived before the police.
I had never seen his truck come down the street that fast.
The brakes squealed.
The door flew open.
He ran toward us before the engine even stopped.
Lily ran first.
“Daddy!”
He dropped to his knees and caught her with one arm.
Then he reached for me with the other.
I tried to be brave.
I really did.
But the second Dad touched me, everything broke.
I cried into his coat.
Not loud.
Not the way Lily cried.
Mine came out like I had been holding my breath for years.
Dad held us both.
“I’m here,” he kept saying. “I’m here. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Amanda stood in the doorway with her arms crossed.
“You are making this bigger than it is.”
Dad lifted his head.
His face scared me.
Not because he looked angry.
Because he looked calm.
Too calm.
“What did you feed him while I was gone?”
Amanda rolled her eyes.
“He ate.”
“What?”
“Noodles. Soup. Toast. Normal food.”
“And Lily?”
“She’s my daughter.”
Dad stood slowly.
“She is also mine.”
Amanda laughed once.
“Legally, maybe. But you know what I mean.”
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“No. Say what you mean.”
She looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then back at Dad.
“You brought him into this marriage like a package I had to accept. I never agreed to treat him like he came from me.”
Lily gasped.
Dad’s face changed.
Something in him seemed to close forever.
The police car pulled up.
Amanda immediately started crying.
It happened so fast I almost believed it.
Almost.
She pressed both hands to her face and said, “Officer, thank God. My husband is terrifying the children.”
Mrs. Keller stepped forward.
“That is not what happened.”
Amanda turned on her.
“Stay out of my marriage.”
Mrs. Keller lifted her chin.
“I stayed out too long.”
The officers separated everyone.
One spoke to Dad.
One spoke to Amanda.
A woman officer knelt in front of me and Lily.
Her name was Officer Reyes.
She asked simple questions.
“What did you eat today?”
“Noodles,” I said.
“What did Lily eat?”
“Chicken.”
“Did this happen before?”
I looked at Amanda.
She was watching me.
Officer Reyes shifted her body so I couldn’t see her anymore.
“Look at me, Ethan.”
I did.
“Did this happen before?”
I nodded.
“How many times?”
I whispered, “When Dad goes away.”
Lily squeezed my hand.
“She gives him different food. And she hides his snacks. And she said if I tell Daddy, he won’t love my mom anymore.”
Officer Reyes wrote everything down.
Dad heard some of it.
His face crumpled.
That hurt worse than Amanda’s words.
I didn’t want Dad to feel bad.
I wanted him to fix it.
Those are not always the same thing.
The small black device was taken as evidence.
Dad explained it to the officers.
It was a child safety recorder.
Audio only.
Activated when I pressed the button.
But I hadn’t pressed it.
Dad looked confused.
Then Mrs. Keller said, “It was blinking when I got there.”
The officer checked the device.
“It started recording at 12:03.”
Dad looked at me.
“Buddy, did you turn it on?”
I shook my head.
Lily raised her hand.
“I did.”
Everyone turned to her.
She looked scared, but she kept talking.
“Before lunch. Mom said Ethan was going to learn his place. I didn’t like that. So I pushed the button in his pocket when I hugged him.”
I stared at her.
“You did?”
She nodded.
“I remembered Daddy said red means truth.”
Dad covered his mouth.
Amanda’s face went pale again.
Officer Reyes asked Lily, “What else did your mom say?”
Lily looked at Dad.
Then at me.
“She said when Daddy came home, Ethan would be gone.”
My stomach dropped.
Dad turned slowly toward Amanda.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
Amanda opened her mouth.
No answer came.
