Surprise

Chapter 4

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

Vanessa had always been good at making ordinary things sound dangerous.

But this was different.

She wasn't simply accusing me of misbehaving.

She was telling my father that I knew something about his missing money.

And I could tell from his expression that he didn't know what to believe.

“Vanessa,” he said carefully, “what exactly are you talking about?”

She laughed softly.

“Ask Nia about the papers she took from my desk.”

“I never took anything!” I shouted.

My father immediately turned toward me.

“Vanessa, she's right here. If you have something to say, say it clearly.”

A pause followed.

Then Vanessa's voice became colder.

“You really think you know that child?”

My father ended the call.

He didn't shout.

He didn't accuse me.

But he sat down heavily and rubbed both hands over his face.

I stood across from him, feeling the old fear return.

“Dad, I didn't take anything.”

He looked up immediately.

“I know you didn't.”

“Then why did she say that?”

“Because she's trying to confuse us.”

He reached for my hand.

“But I need you to tell me everything you remember about that envelope.”

I closed my eyes.

I remembered Vanessa standing in the kitchen wearing a cream-colored sweater.

She had handed me the envelope and told me to put it beside my father's laptop.

I remembered the thick stack of papers inside.

I remembered a red folder underneath them.

And I remembered something else.

There had been a photograph.

It showed my father standing outside a building with a man I didn't recognize.

On the back, someone had written a date and the words FINAL APPROVAL.

“I saw a picture,” I whispered.

My father leaned forward.

“What picture?”

“Of you with another man. Outside some office building.”

His expression changed.

“Did you see the man's face?”

“No. The picture was sideways.”

He immediately searched through the documents on his laptop.

Then he called his attorney and described the photograph.

The attorney asked him to check whether any paperwork involving company ownership had been moved or altered.

My father went to his office.

I followed him.

His office had always been my favorite room in the house because he kept a small shelf of books there for me.

Now the desk looked different.

Several drawers were open.

A filing cabinet stood slightly away from the wall.

My father searched through the folders until he found a missing section in a binder.

“Someone removed these documents,” he muttered.

I stood beside him.

“Could Vanessa have taken them?”

He looked at me.

“It's possible.”

Then he stopped.

A small envelope lay beneath the desk.

It was sealed with clear tape.

My father picked it up carefully.

Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten note.

The note contained only one sentence.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO YOUR WIFE REALLY IS, WATCH THIS BEFORE YOU TRUST ANYONE.

My father read it twice.

“Who left this here?” I asked.

“I don't know.”

He inserted the flash drive into his laptop.

A single video file appeared.

The recording showed a man sitting in a parked car.

He looked to be in his fifties, with a gray beard and a dark baseball cap.

He glanced toward the camera before speaking.

“Marcus, my name is Robert Ellis. I used to work in your accounting department.”

My father leaned closer to the screen.

“I resigned three weeks ago because I discovered something I couldn't ignore.”

The man took a breath.

“Your wife has been requesting copies of financial documents that have nothing to do with household expenses. She also asked me to process transfers using authorization forms that didn't match the records you submitted.”

My father's face hardened.

The video continued.

“I refused. After that, I found evidence that someone had accessed your electronic signature without your permission.”

Robert looked directly into the camera.

“I don't know whether Vanessa acted alone. But I know she was preparing to move money out of the company before you discovered the discrepancies.”

The recording ended.

Silence filled the office.

My father sat motionless.

I had never seen him look so devastated.

He had built his construction business from a small pickup truck and a borrowed set of tools.

He had worked weekends, missed vacations, and spent countless nights reviewing contracts at our kitchen table.

He had told me that the company was something he hoped to leave for me someday.

Now someone had been quietly dismantling it.

My father called his attorney.

Within an hour, the attorney arrived with instructions to preserve the records and contact the bank's fraud department.

He also advised my father not to confront Vanessa again until the evidence had been reviewed.

I sat quietly while the adults discussed financial records, signatures, and legal procedures.

I understood only part of what they said.

But I understood one thing clearly.

Vanessa hadn't just wanted me out of the house.

She had wanted my father distracted.

And if he had believed her lies about me, he might never have discovered what she was doing.

Later that afternoon, Aunt Denise took me to a nearby café.

She ordered hot chocolate and let me choose a chocolate chip cookie.

For the first time in days, I smiled.

Then my phone buzzed.

It was a message from an unknown number.

The message contained a photograph of our house.

Someone had taken it from across the street.

Below the picture were seven words.

TELL YOUR FATHER TO STOP LOOKING.

My hands began to shake.

Aunt Denise noticed immediately.

“What happened?”

I showed her the screen.

Her face turned serious.

She took the phone and called my father.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

After reading the message, he contacted the police and arranged to have the house's exterior security checked.

Then he crouched in front of me.

“Listen carefully, sweetheart. Nobody gets to threaten you.”

I wanted to believe him.

But that night, as we sat together in the living room, another notification appeared on my father's phone.

His attorney had forwarded an urgent message from the bank.

The account receiving the suspicious transfers had been identified.

It belonged to a company registered under Vanessa's maiden name.

And according to the latest filing, she had recently applied for a loan using my father's house as collateral.

My father stared at the screen.

Then he whispered, “She was planning to take everything.”

I looked at the staircase.

I thought about the broken photograph, the suitcase, and the way Vanessa had smiled before leaving.

May you like

For the first time, I understood that her cruelty toward me might have been part of a much larger plan.

And we still didn't know how far she was willing to go.
