Surprise

Chapter 1

I knew something was wrong the second I stepped inside the house.

Vanessa usually left the television running when she was home.

That afternoon, there was nothing.

No music.

No voices.

Only silence.

I had been away for six days on a construction project in Baltimore, and all I wanted was to surprise my eight-year-old daughter.

“Lily?”

No answer.

My suitcase rolled behind me as I crossed the hallway.

“Baby, Daddy’s home.”

Still nothing.

Then I heard it.

Crying.

Soft.

Muffled.

Coming from upstairs.

I dropped the suitcase.

“Lily!”

I ran.

Her bedroom door was half closed.

I pushed it open and stopped so suddenly my shoulder hit the frame.

Lily was curled into a ball on her bed.

Her curly hair covered half her face.

Her pale pajamas were wrinkled.

She was clutching her knees against her chest.

When she saw me, terror flashed through her eyes.

“Dad…”

I rushed to her.

“What happened?”

She shook her head.

“Please don’t be mad.”

My stomach tightened.

“Mad at you?”

She started crying harder.

“Please.”

I dropped to my knees beside the bed.

“Lily, look at me.”

She slowly raised her eyes.

“I could never be mad at you for telling me something.”

Her lips trembled.

Then she lifted the edge of her pajama shirt.

Only a few inches.

It was enough.

Dark bruises marked her side.

Several of them.

Different sizes.

Different shades.

I stopped breathing.

The room seemed to disappear.

“Who did this?”

Lily lowered her shirt immediately.

Her whole body trembled.

“Dad…”

“Who?”

She looked toward the bedroom door.

That one glance told me more than any answer could.

I reached for her carefully.

She threw herself into my arms.

I held her while she sobbed against my chest.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

My voice broke.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.”

She clung tighter.

I wanted to storm downstairs.

I wanted answers.

But Lily was shaking so badly that revenge became secondary.

“Did somebody hurt you today?”

She shook her head.

“Before.”

“How long?”

No answer.

My chest tightened.

“How long, Lily?”

“A while.”

Those two words destroyed me.

I had traveled for work for years.

Usually three or four days.

Sometimes a week.

Vanessa always told me Lily was fine.

Happy.

Busy with school.

I believed her.

God help me, I believed my wife.

Lily suddenly pulled away.

“There’s something.”

“What?”

She reached beneath her pillow.

A worn brown teddy bear appeared.

Mr. Buttons.

She had owned him since she was three.

“Check inside.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

“The back.”

My fingers found a zipper hidden beneath the bear’s fur.

I had never noticed it.

I opened it.

Something hard sat inside.

I pulled out a tiny digital recorder.

My heart started pounding.

“Where did you get this?”

“Grandma gave it to me.”

My mother.

“When?”

“After I told her Vanessa gets mean when you leave.”

I went completely still.

“You told Grandma?”

Lily nodded.

“She said if I ever got scared, press the red button.”

I looked at the recorder.

Then at my daughter.

“Did you?”

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.”

My hand closed around the device.

There were recordings.

My daughter had recorded something.

Something she was too frightened to tell me.

I moved my thumb toward PLAY.

The bedroom door suddenly opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Cream blouse.

Dark pants.

Perfect hair.

For one second, she looked normal.

Then she saw what was in my hand.

Every bit of color disappeared from her face.

“Daniel.”

I slowly stood.

Lily grabbed my shirt.

Vanessa looked from me to the recorder.

“What is that?”

“You tell me.”

She swallowed.

“I have no idea.”

I looked down at Lily.

My daughter’s eyes were fixed on Vanessa.

Fear.

Pure fear.

That was when I knew.

Vanessa knew exactly what I was holding.

I raised the recorder.

“Lily says there’s something on this.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t.”

My thumb stopped above the button.

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t play that.”

The room went silent.

I stared at my wife.

“Why?”

She forced a laugh.

“Because she’s a child. You know how children exaggerate things.”

Behind me, Lily flinched.

I saw it.

Vanessa saw me see it.

Her confidence disappeared.

“What did you do to her?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why shouldn’t I listen?”

“She’s confused.”

I pressed PLAY.

Vanessa whispered,

“No.”

Static filled the room.

Then Lily’s recorded voice.

Small.

Terrified.

“Please… don’t…”

My entire body turned cold.

Another voice came through the speaker.

Vanessa’s.

“You will stop crying before your father gets home.”

Lily buried her face against my back.

The recording continued.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“You embarrassed me.”

“I’m sorry.”

A sharp sound followed.

Then Lily cried out.

My hand started shaking.

Vanessa lunged.

“Give me that!”

I stepped sideways instantly.

She missed the recorder.

I moved between her and Lily.

“Don’t touch it.”

“Daniel—”

“Back up.”

She froze.

I had never spoken to her that way.

I barely recognized my own voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

Not because I wanted to hurt her.

Because I suddenly understood that my daughter needed me calm more than she needed me furious.

Vanessa pointed at the recorder.

“You don’t understand the context.”

I almost laughed.

“Context?”

“She was having a tantrum.”

I turned slightly.

Lily was still gripping my shirt.

“A tantrum caused those bruises?”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“You showed him?”

Lily shrank backward.

That reaction told me everything.

I faced Vanessa.

“Get out of this room.”

“This is my house.”

“Get out.”

“Daniel, she has been manipulating you since the day we married.”

My jaw tightened.

“Do not blame an eight-year-old for what I just heard.”

Vanessa’s breathing quickened.

“You’re making a mistake.”

“Maybe.”

I raised the recorder.

“But I’m going to hear every second.”

Vanessa looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

Which meant there was more.

A lot more.

Then the recording continued by itself.

Vanessa’s recorded voice suddenly said something that made both of us freeze.

“If your father ever finds out, I’ll make sure he never comes home again.”

I stared at my wife.

She stared back.

May you like

And Lily whispered behind me,

“She already tried once.”
