Surprise

Chapter 4

The room went still.

Ethan pushed off the wall.

Marcus reached for my phone.

I stepped back and put it on speaker.

“Say that again, Martin.”

A pause.

Then a tired laugh.

“You always were faster than Ryan.”

Agent Reeves signaled for silence.

Detective Brooks started tracing the call.

I gripped the phone.

“What do you know about my father’s death?”

“I know cancer was convenient.”

My heart stopped.

Dad had died in hospice.

Weak.

Wasted.

Breathing shallowly while I held his hand.

Convenient.

The word sliced through me.

Marcus whispered, “Keep him talking.”

“Did they hurt him?” I asked.

Martin sighed.

“I told Evelyn it was too far.”

My knees nearly gave out.

Ethan stepped closer, but did not touch me.

Good man.

He remembered.

Martin continued.

“Arthur was going to expose everything. The shell vendors. The duplicate defense invoices. The second will. All of it.”

“The second will is forged?”

“You knew that.”

“I need you to say it.”

Another laugh.

“You sound like your father.”

My throat burned.

“Where are you?”

“Where this started.”

The line clicked dead.

Detective Brooks looked up.

“Call bounced through three relays. But I got a partial tower hit near Cross Meridian’s old test facility.”

The old facility.

Dad’s first lab.

Shut down years ago after a fire destroyed half the building.

I stood.

Marcus blocked me.

“No.”

“He said my father’s death.”

“Which means trap.”

I looked at Agent Reeves.

“You have agents?”

“Yes.”

“Then send them.”

He nodded.

“We will.”

I looked at Ethan.

He already knew what I was going to say.

“No,” he said.

“You’re not my commanding officer anymore.”

“No. I’m the man who dragged you out of one fire and refuses to watch you walk into another.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

Marcus stepped between us.

“Claire, you are not going alone.”

“I know.”

That surprised them.

“I’m done going alone.”

We left under federal escort.

The courthouse behind us exploded into chaos as Ryan was arrested in the hallway.

Reporters shouted questions.

Ryan shouted my name.

I did not look at him.

My mother was led out next.

No handcuffs yet.

Just escorted.

She saw me through the crowd.

Her face twisted.

“You did this.”

I stopped.

“No, Mother. You finally got caught.”

For the first time in my life, Evelyn Cross had no polished reply.

The old test facility sat twenty miles outside Charlotte behind a rusting chain-link fence.

Federal agents swept the perimeter.

No Martin.

But inside Dad’s old office, they found a safe standing open.

On the desk was a folder.

My name written across it.

Claire.

Inside were medical records from hospice.

Medication logs.

A private nurse’s notes.

And a toxicology request Dad’s doctor had ordered but never filed.

Marcus read over my shoulder.

“Elevated sedatives.”

Reeves’ face darkened.

“Enough to accelerate respiratory failure?”

Detective Brooks nodded slowly.

“Possibly.”

I felt the world tilt.

Ethan’s voice came from behind me.

“Claire.”

I looked at the desk.

Dad had died holding my hand.

Had he known?

Had he been trying to tell me?

Had I missed it?

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

This time, a text.

Ask your mother who signed the hospice orders.

Attached was a scanned document.

The signature at the bottom was mine.

Only it was not.

Someone had forged my name to authorize a medication increase.

May you like

My mother had not only erased my service.

She had tried to make me look responsible for my father’s death.
