Surprise

Chapter 2

Ethan stepped back like the room had changed shape.

It had.

For five years, my brothers had stayed away because I asked them to.

They came to holidays.

They smiled for photos.

They shook Ethan’s hand.

But they never interfered.

Not when Caleb noticed my forced smile.

Not when Mason saw Ethan ignore my calls.

Not when Jude quietly asked if I was eating enough because grief had started living under my eyes.

They waited because I told them I was fine.

I hated that word now.

Fine.

The lie women use when they are too tired to explain the slow violence of being dismissed.

Caleb walked toward me.

He did not touch my cheek.

He did not grab me.

He stopped close enough that I could decide.

“You hurt?” he asked.

My voice cracked.

“Not the worst place.”

His eyes dropped to my stomach.

I saw the moment he understood.

“Grace.”

Mason moved like thunder.

Ethan lifted both hands.

“Everybody calm down.”

Jude laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Bad sentence.”

Lauren backed toward the sideboard.

“This is ridiculous. Who are these men?”

“My brothers,” I said.

Her face changed.

She looked at Ethan.

“You said she didn’t have family here.”

I stared at him.

“You told her that?”

Ethan’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Caleb turned slowly.

“You told your mistress our sister was alone?”

“I didn’t mean—”

Mason grabbed the back of a dining chair so hard the wood creaked.

“Finish that.”

Ethan swallowed.

“I was angry. I said things.”

Lauren’s confidence flickered, then returned.

“This is between Ethan and Grace.”

Jude stepped toward her.

“No. You made yourself comfortable in it.”

She lifted her chin.

“I didn’t make vows to her.”

“No,” I said. “But you walked into my home wearing my husband’s perfume and touched the box meant to tell him about his child.”

Lauren went still.

Ethan’s head snapped toward me.

“Child?”

I looked at him.

The room blurred.

The candles.

The ruined dinner.

The man I had loved before money taught him arrogance.

“I’m pregnant.”

No one breathed.

Ethan’s face drained white.

“What?”

“Seventeen weeks.”

His eyes dropped to my stomach again.

For one second, something like joy broke across his face.

Then fear.

Then calculation.

I hated that I saw all three.

Lauren whispered, “You’re lying.”

Mason turned on her.

“Careful.”

She pointed at me.

“She is trying to trap him.”

Caleb’s voice went cold.

“Our sister kept his company alive before his mistress knew his name.”

Ethan looked at me.

“You sold jewelry?”

I nodded.

“My grandmother’s bracelet. Earrings. The pearl necklace Mom left me.”

His face twisted.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I loved you.”

That hurt him.

Good.

Some truths should hurt.

Jude picked up the cream box from the table and opened it.

His eyes softened at the ultrasound photo.

Then hardened when he looked at Ethan.

“You slapped the mother of your child.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I didn’t know.”

The room went colder.

I stared at him.

“Would that have made it different?”

He had no answer.

Caleb took out his phone.

“What are you doing?” Ethan asked.

“Calling our attorney.”

Ethan scoffed.

“Your attorney? This is a marital argument.”

Mason smiled.

It was not a kind smile.

“No. This is assault, financial concealment, infidelity, and maybe fraud if you mortgaged marital property without disclosure.”

Lauren’s eyes shifted.

“Ethan?”

That was when I understood she did not know everything either.

Ethan had lied to both of us.

A bitter laugh rose in my throat.

“How much of Southgate belongs to her?”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Grace, don’t do this now.”

“How much?”

Lauren crossed her arms.

“I invested.”

“With what money?” I asked.

She hesitated.

Caleb noticed.

“What money, Lauren?”

Ethan snapped, “Enough.”

But the truth had already started leaking.

Jude opened his phone and typed fast.

He was the youngest, the quietest, the one people underestimated until they remembered he owned a forensic accounting firm.

He looked up.

“Walker Development transferred two hundred thousand dollars to Pierce Strategic Consulting last month.”

Lauren paled.

I turned to Ethan.

“That was our reserve.”

He rubbed his face.

“It was a consulting fee.”

Jude looked at Lauren.

“For what deliverable?”

She said nothing.

Caleb stepped closer to Ethan.

“You hit her, you lied to her, you risked her home, and you moved money to your girlfriend.”

Ethan’s anger returned because shame needed somewhere to go.

“You don’t get to come into my house and threaten me.”

Mason released the chair and took one step.

Ethan backed up.

Caleb held out one hand to stop Mason.

Then he looked at me.

“Grace. Say the word.”

For years, I thought leaving would feel like failure.

But standing there with my cheek burning and my baby between my hands, staying suddenly felt like betrayal.

I took off my wedding ring.

Ethan’s face crumpled.

“Grace, wait.”

I placed it beside the cold anniversary dinner.

“No.”

Lauren whispered, “Ethan?”

He ignored her now.

“Please. Let’s talk.”

May you like

I looked at the man who had slapped me in front of his mistress and only panicked when witnesses arrived.

“We are talking. You’re just hearing me for the first time.”
