Surprise

Chapter 7

Eleanor Price agreed to meet us at her home.

She was seventy-two, with silver hair and sharp eyes that missed nothing.

When I arrived with Evelyn, she was waiting beside a table covered in old files.

"I should have spoken sooner," she said.

"Why didn't you?"

She looked down.

"Because Richard threatened my family."

She explained that she'd worked for my father for nearly twenty years. She had prepared the original will, witnessed its execution, and recorded every revision.

The trust restrictions were deliberate.

My father wanted Lily protected from anyone who might try to use her inheritance for personal gain.

After his death, Eleanor discovered that a page had been removed from the estate copy.

She confronted Richard.

He told her that the page had been misplaced.

She didn't believe him.

Then he showed her photographs of her adult son leaving work.

Richard claimed he had friends who could make her family suffer.

Eleanor had kept quiet because she feared what might happen.

I struggled to control my anger.

"He used my daughter's inheritance to threaten an elderly woman and her family."

Eleanor nodded.

"I know."

"Why come forward now?"

"Because I saw the photograph of your little girl beside the trash can."

My throat tightened.

Eleanor wiped her eyes.

"Your father loved that child more than anything. If he'd known what was happening in your home, he would have torn the whole world apart to protect her."

She handed Evelyn a folder.

Inside were copies of the original will, signed witness statements, and a log documenting every version of the document.

The log proved that the missing page had been present when the will was executed.

It also recorded when Richard requested a copy.

The request had been made under false pretenses.

Eleanor had retained the records because she feared something like this might happen.

Evelyn reviewed the documents carefully.

"This is extremely important," she said. "We'll preserve everything and provide it to the investigators."

I looked at Eleanor.

"Did anyone else help Richard?"

She hesitated.

"Someone who worked for your father had access to the estate files. Someone who knew the location of the study and the security system."

"Who?"

"His former accountant, Peter Lawson."

I recognized the name.

Peter had retired shortly before my father died.

I'd never suspected him of wrongdoing.

Eleanor explained that Peter had been dismissed after my father discovered irregularities in the foundation's accounts.

Richard had arranged for him to receive consulting work afterward.

Together, they had moved money through several companies.

Vanessa had been brought into the scheme later.

The pattern was becoming clearer.

Richard had spent years building a network of people who owed him favors or feared his influence.

He didn't need to control everyone.

He only needed enough people to keep the truth buried.

Evelyn contacted the investigators.

They began examining the financial records, the forged authorization, the original will, and Eleanor's evidence.

For the first time, Richard's position looked vulnerable.

Then my phone rang.

It was Lily's school.

Her teacher explained that a man had arrived claiming to be a family friend. He'd asked to take Lily out of class.

The school had refused.

The man had left after staff requested identification.

I felt cold all over.

"Did he give a name?"

"Richard Cole."

I thanked the teacher and immediately contacted the authorities.

Then I drove to the school.

Lily was sitting in the principal's office with Danielle beside her.

She jumped up when she saw me.

"Daddy!"

I hugged her tightly.

"You're safe."

She clung to me.

"He said you wanted me to go with him."

My jaw tightened.

"Did you believe him?"

"I didn't know."

She looked frightened.

"What if I had gone?"

I knelt in front of her.

"You did exactly the right thing by staying with your teacher. If anyone ever asks you to leave school, even someone you know, you wait for your teacher to call me."

She nodded.

"Even Uncle Richard?"

"Especially anyone who makes you uncomfortable."

That evening, I moved Lily to Danielle's home temporarily.

The authorities arranged appropriate security measures while the investigation continued.

I hated being separated from her.

But when she hugged me goodbye, she whispered, "I know you're coming back."

I kissed her forehead.

"Always."

After she left, I returned to my house.

A message waited on my phone.

Unknown number.

Stop digging, Marcus. You have already lost enough.

I forwarded it to the investigators.

Then I called Evelyn.

"We have the will, the financial records, Eleanor's testimony, and evidence that Richard tried to approach Lily at school."

"Yes," she said. "But we still need to establish the full extent of the fraud."

"What else do we need?"

"Peter Lawson."

She explained that Peter had disappeared from his usual addresses. Investigators were attempting to locate him.

Without his testimony, Richard could claim that the financial irregularities were caused by mistakes made by others.

I sat in my father's study.

For years, I'd kept the room untouched because I couldn't bear the thought of losing another piece of him.

Now the room had become the place where I was finally learning who he'd been.

I looked at the photograph of my father holding me.

"I should have listened," I whispered.

I didn't know whether I was speaking to him or to myself.

Then my phone rang.

Evelyn sounded breathless.

"They found Peter."

"Where?"

"At a hotel outside the city."

"Will he talk?"

"He says he will."

I stood up.

"Why now?"

Evelyn paused.

"Because Richard just tried to transfer the remaining money out of his company."

I felt my pulse quicken.

"He's running."

"No," she said.

"He's preparing to fight."

And for the first time, I understood that the final confrontation was no longer about recovering money.

May you like

It was about stopping a man who believed he could threaten children, manipulate families, and rewrite the truth whenever it suited him.

I wasn't going to let him do that again.
