Surprise

Chapter 6

Vanessa's words stayed with me all night.

There won't be anything left.

I sat in my mother's study, staring at the blue ledger.

I had spent twenty-one years believing my family was ordinary.

We lived in a beautiful house.

My father worked hard.

My stepmother controlled everything.

I went to college, worked part-time, and worried about paying tuition.

Now I was discovering that my mother had left me an inheritance large enough to change my future.

And Vanessa had been quietly stealing it.

The next morning, Daniel called.

“We found the company.”

I gripped my phone.

“What company?”

“The one receiving transfers from the trust-controlled assets.”

My heart raced.

“What is it called?”

“Redwood Family Holdings.”

I frowned.

“Redwood?”

Daniel continued.

“It was formed eight months ago. Vanessa is listed as the managing member.”

I closed my eyes.

“And the properties?”

“Two rental properties were placed under attempted sale contracts. The transfers appear to rely on the disputed power of attorney.”

“Can she sell them?”

“We're seeking emergency relief to stop the transactions. Until the court rules, we're notifying the closing agents, title companies, and banks that the authority is disputed.”

I felt a small wave of relief.

But it disappeared when he added something else.

“Nia, there's another problem.”

“What?”

“Your mother maintained an education account for you. The last verified balance was approximately one hundred and sixty thousand dollars.”

I stopped breathing.

My tuition.

The money I had spent years struggling to earn.

“Where is it?”

“We're investigating withdrawals made through an account serviced by a firm connected to Vanessa.”

I sat down.

For three years, Vanessa had told me Dad couldn't afford to help with college.

She had watched me work late shifts.

She had criticized me for falling asleep during family dinners.

She had called me lazy when I struggled to balance school and work.

All while money intended for my education was disappearing.

I pressed a hand over my mouth.

“Nia?” Daniel asked.

“I'm here.”

“Are you okay?”

I laughed bitterly.

“No.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, “Your mother worked very hard to make sure you would have opportunities. We're going to do everything legally possible to protect what remains and recover what was taken.”

After the call, I walked downstairs.

Dad was sitting at the kitchen table.

He looked as though he hadn't slept.

I placed the education account statement in front of him.

He read it.

Then he slowly lowered his head.

“She told me Elena never finished setting that up.”

I stared at him.

“Who told you?”

“Vanessa.”

“Dad, when are you going to stop believing everything she says?”

He closed his eyes.

“I already have.”

“Too late.”

The words came out before I could stop them.

He flinched.

I wanted to apologize.

But I was tired of apologizing for being hurt.

“Mom left money for my college. I worked nights cleaning tables while Vanessa wore designer clothes and planned vacations.”

Dad's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know.”

“You never asked.”

He nodded.

“No. I didn't.”

I turned away.

I needed distance.

I needed time to understand whether the father I loved was still someone I could trust.

That afternoon, I met Daniel at his office.

He showed me bank statements, property records, and copies of the disputed documents.

An independent forensic accountant had begun tracing the transfers.

The situation was worse than we expected.

Vanessa had moved money through multiple accounts.

Some payments went to expensive boutiques and luxury travel agencies.

Others went to a company registered under the name of a man called Adrian Price.

I frowned.

“Who's Adrian Price?”

Daniel studied me.

“Do you recognize him?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

He turned his laptop toward me.

A photograph appeared.

A man in his forties stood beside a black sports car.

He wore an expensive watch and smiled confidently.

I stared at the image.

Then my stomach dropped.

I recognized him.

Three months earlier, Vanessa had introduced him at a family barbecue.

She said he was an interior designer helping with renovations.

But there had never been any renovations.

And I remembered something else.

Vanessa had been standing close to him near the garden.

When she saw me approaching, she stepped away quickly.

I had thought nothing of it.

Now I wondered whether he was her business partner.

Or something more.

“Have you found evidence connecting him to the transfers?” I asked.

Daniel nodded.

“We're still reviewing records, but several large payments went to his company.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Can we find out what he did with the money?”

“We're working on it.”

On my way home, Maya called.

Her voice was shaking.

“Nia, please come back.”

My heart jumped.

“What happened?”

“Mom's here.”

I stopped walking.

“She came back?”

“Yes. She's screaming at Dad. She says she's going to take me and leave.”

“Are you safe?”

“I think so.”

Then I heard Vanessa shouting in the background.

“Maya! Who are you talking to?”

The line went dead.

I called Dad.

No answer.

I called again.

Still nothing.

Panic rose in my chest.

I hurried home.

When I arrived, the front door stood open.

A suitcase lay overturned in the hallway.

Maya sat on the stairs, crying.

Dad stood in the living room.

Vanessa was holding a thick envelope.

“What happened?” I demanded.

She turned toward me.

Her expression was wild.

“There she is. The little princess who thinks she's going to steal everything from me.”

I stepped back.

“I'm not stealing anything.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Your mother planned this.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

“She knew exactly how to keep control, even after she died.”

Dad stepped forward.

“Vanessa, stop.”

She ignored him.

“She never trusted me. Even before we married, she left instructions designed to keep me away from everything.”

I stared at her.

“My mother died before you married Dad.”

Vanessa froze.

Then she realized what she had said.

My father turned slowly.

“Before we married?”

Silence.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Vanessa,” I whispered, “how did you know what my mother planned before she died?”

She looked toward the door.

May you like

And suddenly, I understood that the financial fraud might not have started after her marriage.

It might have started years earlier.
