Surprise

Chapter 4

The police arrived through the front gates under flashing blue lights.

That alone told me how much the world had shifted.

The Alfieri house did not invite police.

It absorbed problems before outsiders ever heard a whisper.

But Nico wanted this in the open.

Camille wanted darkness.

He chose light.

Detectives took the pills.

The bottle.

The brake-line fitting.

My recordings.

Edna’s flash drive.

The burner phone.

Camille demanded her lawyer and refused to sit.

That lasted until Nico said, “Sit down before you fall pretending to be innocent.”

She sat.

I almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Detective Mara Wells opened the first file from Matteo Alfieri’s safe.

The room grew colder with every line.

Matteo had investigated Camille’s family years before the engagement.

The Ashcrofts looked clean.

Old money.

Philanthropy.

Board seats.

But beneath it were offshore debts, forged contracts, and a quiet dependence on Alfieri capital.

Matteo’s note was brutal.

Camille Ashcroft does not marry men. She acquires access.

Nico read that line twice.

His face did not break.

That made it worse.

Pain held inside a man like Nico had nowhere soft to land.

The burner phone held messages.

Not all named.

Some deleted.

But enough remained.

Increase dose before public appearances.

He must appear unstable.

Wedding before quarter close.

After signature, transfer medical authority.

My stomach turned.

Nico looked at me.

“Medical authority?”

I nodded slowly.

“If you were declared unable to manage your care, your spouse could petition for decision rights.”

Camille’s jaw tightened.

Detective Wells looked at her.

“Were you attempting to establish legal control over Mr. Alfieri?”

Camille said nothing.

Luca paced behind the sofa like he wanted to break the floor.

Nico held up one hand.

Luca stopped.

That control, even now, reminded everyone who Nico was.

Then the brake fitting came back into the conversation.

A forensic tech confirmed it matched the make of Nico’s modified SUV.

The SUV from the crash.

Nico went silent.

Camille looked at her nails.

That was when I knew she had done more than drug him.

She had expected this.

Maybe not tonight.

But eventually.

She had prepared herself to survive it.

Detective Wells asked, “Who installed the part?”

Camille lifted her eyes.

“I have no idea.”

Luca said, “I do.”

Everyone turned.

His voice was strained.

“Marco Bell. Estate mechanic. He disappeared two days after the crash.”

Nico’s face darkened.

“I was told he quit.”

“So was I.”

Edna whispered, “He came to me the night before he left.”

Nico turned.

“What?”

“He was scared. Said the accident was wrong. Said if he stayed, his daughter would pay.”

“Who threatened him?”

Edna looked at Camille.

Camille smiled.

“Careful, Edna.”

The housekeeper straightened.

“No.”

The word trembled, but it stood.

“He said Camille’s brother made the call.”

Camille’s expression hardened.

“My brother is in Geneva.”

Detective Wells checked the burner phone.

“Not all month.”

Nico’s voice dropped.

“Dominic was here?”

Camille said nothing.

Luca cursed.

Dominic Ashcroft.

I knew the name because he had come to the house once and looked at the staff like we were carpet.

If Camille was ice, Dominic was smoke.

Harder to hold.

Harder to prove.

Police put out alerts.

By midnight, Camille was arrested.

Charges were still forming, but child-simple words sat beneath all the legal ones.

She hurt him.

She drugged him.

She tried to own him.

When officers guided her toward the door, she paused beside me.

“You think he will protect you?”

I looked at her.

“I think I protected myself before I protected him.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Your brother needs surgery, doesn’t he?”

My blood froze.

Nico’s head snapped up.

Camille smiled.

“There it is.”

I could not speak.

She leaned closer.

“You came here for money. Never pretend you’re noble.”

Nico’s voice cut through the room.

“Get her out.”

When she was gone, the silence changed.

No piano.

No guests.

No performance.

Just aftermath.

Nico turned his chair toward me.

“How does she know about Wes?”

I swallowed.

“She probably read my employment file.”

Luca shook his head.

“Employment files don’t include medical details about dependents.”

I felt suddenly cold.

Nico looked at me carefully.

“Adeline.”

I hated the softness in his voice.

It made my fear worse.

“Wes has surgery scheduled,” I said. “The insurance from this job made it possible.”

“When?”

“Next Thursday.”

Detective Wells checked Camille’s phone records.

Then looked up.

Her face told me before she spoke.

“Camille contacted the hospital administrator yesterday.”

My knees weakened.

Nico’s hand closed around his wheel.

“What did she say?”

The detective read from the screen.

If Nurse Marsh becomes a problem, freeze the dependent authorization.

I grabbed the back of a chair.

Wes.

My little brother.

The paper cranes.

The crossed-out dates.

The miracle job.

All of it had become another weapon.

Nico looked at Luca.

“Put guards on the hospital.”

Then he looked at me.

“No one touches your brother.”

I wanted to believe him.

May you like

But I had worked too long around powerful people to mistake a promise for proof.

So I whispered, “Then help me save him before she reaches the next person.”
