Surprise

Chapter 6

The next morning, Rebecca Lawson stared at the document Danielle had sent.

I sat beside her, unable to take my eyes off the signature at the bottom.

Harold Carter.

My husband had been dead for four years.

Yet according to the document, he had supposedly signed a private agreement transferring our home to a company associated with Adrian Bell just three months earlier.

The date was impossible.

I pointed at it.

"They didn't even bother to check when my husband died."

Rebecca frowned.

"They may not have intended to use this exact version in court. It could be a draft."

"What would they use it for?"

"To support a false ownership claim, pressure you into settling, or confuse a lender reviewing the property."

I stared at the document.

Harold had worked hard his entire life.

He believed in paying debts, honoring promises, and leaving something meaningful for his family.

Now his name was being used to steal the home he loved.

I felt tears gathering.

Rebecca placed the paper down.

"Evelyn, this is strong evidence of attempted fraud."

I nodded.

"But I need to know how far it goes."

She looked at me.

"We're going to find out."

Danielle agreed to meet with investigators.

She explained that Vanessa had hired her as an administrative assistant for the wellness company.

At first, the work seemed legitimate.

She organized invoices, scheduled meetings, and prepared presentations.

Then Vanessa began asking her to alter documents.

Dates changed.

Bank information disappeared.

Signatures appeared on forms Danielle had never seen the supposed signers approve.

When Danielle questioned the process, Vanessa told her she was being paranoid.

Eventually, Danielle discovered a private folder containing scanned copies of my driver's license, bank statements, medical documents, and property records.

I listened as she described them.

Every document had come from somewhere inside my house.

My bedroom.

My office.

My filing cabinet.

Places Vanessa had entered while I was sleeping or away.

Danielle handed over a company laptop and explained that some files might still be recoverable.

Investigators took possession of it through the proper process.

By the end of the meeting, they had opened a broader investigation into possible identity theft, fraud, and conspiracy.

But Vanessa was missing.

Her phone had been turned off.

Adrian Bell had also disappeared from his usual office.

The condominium connected to their company appeared empty.

I felt a growing dread.

People who stole money usually tried to hide it.

But people who believed they were about to be caught could become unpredictable.

Rebecca helped me arrange a security assessment for the house.

I replaced compromised passwords.

I notified my banks.

I moved the original trust documents into secure storage.

And I made sure Maya's school understood that nobody except me or an authorized representative could change her emergency contact information or collect her from campus.

Then something happened that shocked me.

Marcus asked to meet.

He arrived at my house carrying a cardboard box.

Inside were photographs, letters, and several pieces of jewelry.

Vanessa's belongings.

"I found these in the back of her closet," he said.

I looked through the box.

At the bottom was a small velvet pouch.

Inside sat a gold necklace with a tiny pearl pendant.

I recognized it immediately.

Rachel's necklace.

My daughter had worn it on her wedding day.

After she died, I had placed it in a locked keepsake box, intending to give it to Maya when she turned eighteen.

I stared at the pendant.

"Where did you find this?"

Marcus looked confused.

"In Vanessa's dresser."

My hands began shaking.

"She stole it."

His face changed.

"What?"

I held up the necklace.

"This belonged to Rachel."

Marcus stared.

"I didn't know."

I looked at him.

"She went into my bedroom. She opened my keepsake box. She took something that belonged to your dead sister."

Marcus sat down heavily.

I had never seen him look so ashamed.

He covered his face.

"Mom, I don't know who I married."

I sat across from him.

"You married someone you chose not to question."

He lowered his hands.

"I know."

For the first time, I saw how badly his choices had damaged him.

His business was under scrutiny because its accounts had been linked to the fraudulent loan application.

His credit was damaged.

His marriage was collapsing.

And he had nearly helped his wife destroy the two people who should have mattered most to him.

But I wasn't ready to comfort him.

"Marcus, I need you to listen carefully."

He nodded.

"I'm willing to love you through this. I am not willing to pretend you had no responsibility."

Tears filled his eyes.

"I understand."

"You're going to cooperate with the investigators. You're going to tell them everything, even if it makes you look foolish."

"I will."

"And you're going to stop asking me to fix the consequences of decisions you made."

He looked down.

"Okay."

I handed him a tissue.

Then I said something I had never imagined saying to my son.

"You need to find somewhere else to live."

His eyes widened.

"Mom..."

"I love you. But I need my home to feel safe again."

He nodded slowly.

"I understand."

He stood.

Before leaving, he turned toward me.

"Would Dad hate me?"

The question broke my heart.

I looked at the photograph of Harold hanging above the fireplace.

"No."

Marcus began crying.

"But he'd be disappointed in me."

"Yes."

I took a breath.

"And he'd expect you to become a better man."

Marcus nodded.

Then he left.

That evening, Maya came downstairs wearing her pajamas.

She saw Rachel's necklace on the table.

Her eyes widened.

"Grandma?"

I picked it up.

"Your mother's necklace."

Maya approached slowly.

"Where did you find it?"

I hesitated.

Then I told her the truth.

Vanessa had taken it.

Maya began crying.

I held her while she pressed the pendant against her chest.

"I thought it was gone forever."

"So did I."

After a while, she pulled back.

"Can I wear it?"

I smiled.

"Of course."

I fastened the necklace around her neck.

She touched the pearl with trembling fingers.

Then she whispered, "I wish Mom could see me."

I kissed her forehead.

"She would be so proud."

For the first time in weeks, the house felt peaceful.

Maya and I made dinner together.

We laughed over a burned tray of biscuits.

We watched an old movie that Rachel had loved.

Then, just before ten, the doorbell rang.

I looked at the security monitor.

A woman stood on the porch.

Her hair was messy.

Her face was pale.

Vanessa.

She looked straight into the camera.

"Evelyn, please open the door."

I didn't move.

She began pounding.

"I know you're in there!"

Maya appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Grandma?"

I gestured for her to stay upstairs.

Then Vanessa shouted something that made my blood run cold.

"Adrian took everything! He's coming for the house, and he doesn't care what happens to you!"

I reached for my phone.

But before I could call the police, Vanessa stepped backward.

A black SUV slowly pulled up behind her.

And the man getting out was Adrian Bell.
