Chapter 7

Court began three days later.
I wore a borrowed navy dress because everything I owned was either in storage, smoke-damaged, or from the life Eleanor had destroyed.
Lily stayed with Aunt Margaret in a protected room downstairs.
Ethan sat across the aisle from me.
Not beside me.
That was my choice.
He respected it.
Eleanor entered like she still expected the room to rise.
No one did.
Her pearls were gone.
Her hair was pinned too tightly.
Her eyes found Ethan first.
“My son.”
He did not move.
Then she looked at me.
The hatred there was calm.
That scared me more than rage.
The judge reviewed the emergency custody petition.
Eleanor’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, Mrs. Blackwood has a documented history of instability following childbirth.”
My stomach twisted.
Ethan stood before his lawyer could.
“That history was manufactured.”
The judge looked over her glasses.
“Mr. Blackwood, sit unless called.”
He sat.
But the room had heard him.
My attorney, Grace Patel, placed copies of the hospital bracelet, Rose’s records, and Detective Singh’s affidavits into evidence.
Grace had been Claire the victim’s attorney, yes.
But in that courtroom, she became something sharper.
She became the voice I had been denied.
“Mrs. Blackwood was told her living newborn had died,” Grace said. “Her child was transferred through fraudulent paperwork. The people responsible are now under arrest.”
Eleanor’s attorney smiled.
“Allegedly.”
Grace looked at him.
“On video.”
The smile faded.
Then Rose took the stand.
Her hands shook around the Bible.
She would not look at Eleanor.
Grace approached.
“Did Eleanor Blackwood instruct you to remove Claire Blackwood from her daughter’s medical records?”
“Yes.”
“Did she pay Dr. Marcus Vale to falsify an infant death certificate?”
“Yes.”
A murmur moved through the courtroom.
The judge warned everyone to be silent.
Grace continued.
“Did Eleanor Blackwood know the child was alive?”
Rose cried.
“Yes.”
Eleanor slammed her hand on the table.
“She is lying to save herself!”
The judge’s voice cracked like thunder.
“One more outburst and I will have you removed.”
Rose sobbed harder.
“I kept copies because I was afraid. Mrs. Blackwood said the baby would be better raised by people who understood obedience.”
My nails dug into my palms.
Grace’s voice softened.
“Whose obedience?”
Rose looked at me.
“Ethan’s. Claire’s. Everyone’s.”
Then Ethan was called.
He walked to the stand like a man walking into fire.
Grace asked simple questions.
“Did your wife attempt to contact you after childbirth?”
“I now know she did.”
“Did you receive her letters?”
“No.”
“Did you believe accusations made against her?”
“Yes.”
“Were they true?”
“No.”
“Did you help remove your mother’s influence from your household after learning this?”
“Yes.”
Grace paused.
“Mr. Blackwood, why are you asking the court to give Claire full immediate custody of Lily?”
Ethan looked at me.
Then at the judge.
“Because Claire fought for our daughter when I failed them both. Lily knows her as her mother. I am her father by blood, but trust must be earned. I am asking for the chance to earn it without taking safety from the child.”
The room went quiet.
I hated that I cried.
I hated that part of me still loved him.
But I did.
The judge nodded once.
Then Eleanor’s attorney cross-examined him.
“Mr. Blackwood, are you saying you were easily manipulated?”
Ethan looked at his mother.
“I’m saying I was loyal to the wrong person.”
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“And now you trust the woman who disappeared with your heir?”
I stood.
Grace touched my arm.
I sat.
Ethan answered.
“She didn’t disappear with my heir. She recovered our child.”
By noon, the judge granted temporary sole custody to me.
Ethan received supervised visitation, only if I agreed and only with a court monitor present.
Eleanor was barred from any contact.
Serena, Dr. Vale, Captain Morris, and Rose remained in custody.
It should have felt like victory.
Instead, I went downstairs and found Lily curled in Aunt Margaret’s lap, asleep with her thumb in her mouth.
I knelt beside her and wept silently.
Aunt Margaret stroked my hair.
“You did it.”
“No,” I whispered. “I survived this part.”
Ethan appeared at the doorway.
He did not enter.
“May I see her?”
I looked at Lily.
Then at him.
“For a minute.”
He stepped in slowly.
Lily woke when the floor creaked.
She blinked at him.
Then she reached for me.
I picked her up.
Ethan crouched a few feet away.
“Hi, Lily.”
She stared.
He pulled something from his pocket.
The hospital bracelet.
He had put it in a small clear case.
“This was yours,” he said. “Your mama kept you safe until I could see it.”
Lily did not understand the words.
But she understood softness.
She leaned her cheek against my shoulder and watched him.
Then she whispered, “Efan.”
His breath caught.
“It’s Ethan,” I said gently.
She tried again.
“Efan.”
He smiled through tears.
“That’s perfect.”
For one small second, the room felt almost safe.
Then Grace stepped inside holding her phone.
Her face was pale.
“Claire.”
“What?”
She turned the screen toward me.
A news headline filled it.
BLACKWOOD HEIR SCANDAL: SOURCES CLAIM NANNY-MOTHER PLOT TO SEIZE BILLIONS.
I stared at the words.
Nanny-mother.
Plot.
Seize.
Eleanor had lost the courtroom.
So she had moved to the public.
Ethan stood.
“Who leaked that?”
Grace’s mouth tightened.
“Your family board.”
May you like
My blood went cold.
Because the empire was fighting back.
