Chapter 1

“DON'T SIT THERE! THAT'S MY SEAT!”
Before I could even stand, my husband's older sister grabbed a crystal glass and threw an entire glass of ice water across my chest.
I screamed.
The freezing water soaked through my cream maternity dress, spilled over my six-month-pregnant belly, and splashed onto the expensive dining room carpet.
Ice cubes scattered around my feet.
I instinctively wrapped both arms around my stomach.
My baby kicked.
For one terrifying second, I couldn't breathe.
Then I heard laughter.
Not concern.
Not an apology.
Laughter.
My name is Nia Bennett. I was thirty-two years old, six months pregnant with my first child, and sitting at what was supposed to be a peaceful family dinner.
The woman standing over me was Vanessa Bennett, my husband's thirty-nine-year-old sister.
She still held the empty glass.
Her lips curled into a satisfied smile.
“Maybe next time you'll learn where you belong.”
I stared at her.
Water dripped from my hair onto my shoulders.
My hands trembled against my belly.
“Vanessa, what is wrong with you?”
She rolled her eyes.
“Relax, Nia. It's only water.”
I looked around the dining table.
My mother-in-law, Evelyn, sat in her navy dress with an expression of irritation rather than concern.
My father-in-law, Arthur, continued cutting his steak.
Two relatives exchanged amused looks.
Nobody moved to help me.
Nobody asked whether my baby was all right.
Then a chair scraped violently against the floor.
My husband, Marcus, was on his feet.
“ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?”
His voice thundered across the room.
Vanessa's smile faded slightly.
Marcus rushed to my side, pulling off his navy jacket and wrapping it around my shaking shoulders.
“She is six months pregnant!” he shouted. “You just threw ice water all over her!”
Vanessa shrugged.
“Oh, please. You're acting like I attacked her.”
“You deliberately humiliated my wife!”
“Because she sat in my chair!”
Marcus stared at her.
“Your chair?”
Vanessa pointed toward the place where I had been sitting.
“Everyone knows that's where I sit.”
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
I had been invited into this house by Evelyn herself.
When Marcus and I arrived, she told us to sit wherever we wanted.
Now I understood why.
I looked at my mother-in-law.
“Evelyn, you told me to sit here.”
She lifted her wineglass.
“Don't drag me into this, Nia.”
Marcus turned toward her.
“Mom, you watched Vanessa throw water on my pregnant wife!”
Evelyn sighed.
“Marcus, don't ruin dinner over something so small.”
Something inside me broke.
Small?
My dress was soaked.
My skin was freezing.
I was frightened for my unborn daughter.
And these people were treating my humiliation like entertainment.
Arthur finally looked up.
“Enough shouting. The food is getting cold.”
Marcus stared at his father.
“Dad, are you serious?”
Arthur frowned.
“Your sister was wrong, but there's no reason to make a spectacle.”
“No reason?”
Marcus looked around the table.
“You're all sitting here laughing while my pregnant wife is crying?”
Nobody answered.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She's always crying. Pregnancy has made her dramatic.”
I lowered my face.
I didn't want them to see another tear.
But Marcus gently lifted my chin.
“Nia, look at me.”
I met his eyes.
“Are you hurt?”
“I don't think so.”
“Is the baby moving?”
I nodded.
“She kicked when the water hit me.”
His face tightened.
“We're leaving. I'll call your doctor.”
He took my hand.
For the first time that evening, I felt someone was truly protecting me.
We walked toward the dining room entrance.
Behind us, Vanessa laughed again.
“You're seriously choosing HER over your family?”
Marcus stopped.
Slowly, he turned.
His expression was colder than I had ever seen it.
“She IS my family.”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Evelyn pushed back her chair.
“And what about us?”
Marcus looked at his mother.
“You want to talk about family?”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“Then explain what you've all been saying about my wife.”
The dining room became silent.
Arthur finally put down his fork.
Vanessa glanced toward Evelyn.
I noticed the panic that passed between them.
Marcus opened a family group chat.
I recognized the name immediately.
BENNETT FAMILY ONLY.
I had never been included in that group.
Marcus rarely checked it because the constant arguments exhausted him.
But apparently, he had looked at it before we arrived.
He held up the screen.
“Before dinner, Vanessa wrote that Nia needed to be taught a lesson.”
My stomach dropped.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, those were private messages!”
He laughed bitterly.
“Private messages about humiliating my pregnant wife?”
Evelyn stood.
“You shouldn't be exposing family conversations.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You mean the conversations where you discuss how to make Nia feel unwelcome?”
My heart began pounding.
I wanted to see the messages.
But I was afraid of what they contained.
Marcus scrolled down.
Then his expression changed.
He looked at the final message.
His jaw tightened.
“After what you've written here, none of you are coming near our baby.”
Vanessa went pale.
Evelyn grabbed the back of her chair.
Arthur stood so suddenly that his glass tipped over.
I looked at Marcus's phone.
At first, I saw only the beginning of Vanessa's message.
Then I recognized a photograph.
It showed my signature.
My signature on a document I had never seen before.
My hands began shaking.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“Show them the last message.”
Vanessa moved toward us.
“DON'T!”
Marcus stepped between us.
And I realized that the ice water had never been the real danger.
May you like
The humiliation was only the beginning.
Because someone in that room had been planning something far worse for me and my unborn daughter.
