Chapter 5

Ethan was arrested outside the courthouse.
Not for attempted murder yet.
For evidence tampering, fraud, and violating the hospital investigation order.
It was enough to put him in cuffs.
It was enough for Lily to see from behind the tinted window of Mara’s car.
She watched silently as police guided her father into the back seat.
I wanted to cover her eyes.
Mara stopped me.
“She deserves to know he can be stopped.”
That night, Lily slept four hours without waking.
I sat beside her the whole time.
At 3:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photo appeared.
Mara’s front door.
Then a message.
You think the order protects you?
My blood turned cold.
I woke Mara.
She called Detective Hall.
Within minutes, police were outside.
Julia told me not to answer unknown calls.
Detective Hall told me to forward everything.
Mara told me she was buying a baseball bat.
I told everyone I was fine.
I was lying.
The next day, Vanessa gave a statement through her attorney.
She claimed Ethan had manipulated her.
She claimed she thought the bottle contained a sleep aid prescribed for me.
She claimed she removed the security footage because Ethan threatened to ruin her life.
She cried on camera outside the clinic.
Reporters called her “the assistant trapped in a dangerous marriage plot.”
I watched the clip from Mara’s couch.
My hands shook.
“She’s good,” Mara said.
“She’s been practicing longer.”
Lily walked in halfway through the video.
She saw Vanessa crying.
Her face went pale.
I shut the laptop.
Too late.
“She’s pretending,” Lily whispered.
I pulled her close.
“Yes.”
“She pretended with me too.”
I froze.
“What do you mean?”
Lily picked at the ear of her stuffed rabbit.
“She said if I helped her make Mommy rest, Daddy would love me more.”
My chest cracked open.
“She asked you to help?”
Lily nodded, crying.
“She gave me the pink cup. I said no. Then Daddy got mad.”
I held her while she sobbed.
No child should know the weight of refusing evil.
No child should wonder if saving her mother made her father stop loving her.
Detective Hall came that evening with news.
“We recovered part of the deleted kitchen camera footage.”
My legs weakened.
He played it on Mara’s television.
There was my kitchen.
Vanessa pouring milk.
Ethan watching.
Lily standing near the island with her rabbit clutched to her chest.
Vanessa held out the cup.
Lily shook her head.
Vanessa smiled and bent close.
No audio.
Then Ethan grabbed Lily’s arm.
My whole body went hot.
On screen, I entered the kitchen.
Tired.
Trusting.
Vanessa handed me the cup.
I drank.
Minutes later, I swayed.
Lily ran to me.
Ethan pulled her back.
I fell.
The footage glitched.
Then returned.
Ethan knelt beside me.
Not to help.
To check my pulse.
Vanessa searched her purse.
Then the clip ended.
Mara was crying.
Detective Hall looked grim.
“This helps. But we still need the missing hard drive. The recovered clip may be challenged because it’s partial.”
I stared at the frozen screen.
Lily pointed at the corner.
“Rabbit saw.”
We all turned to her.
“What, baby?”
She lifted her stuffed rabbit.
Mara whispered, “Oh my God.”
One of the rabbit’s eyes was black plastic.
But the other had a tiny glass shine.
A nanny camera.
My mother had bought it for me after a break-in two years earlier.
I had forgotten it existed.
Lily hugged it tight.
“I turned it on when Aunt Vanessa came,” she whispered.
“Because Mommy said if I ever felt scared, rabbit should watch.”
Detective Hall gently took the rabbit.
Lily cried but let him.
He connected it to his laptop.
A file opened.
Clear audio.
Clear video.
Ethan’s voice filled the room.
“When she signs nothing, we do this the other way.”

Vanessa answered, “And Lily?”
Ethan said, “After Claire is gone, she’ll learn who to obey.”
