Surprise

Chapter 8

I waited until court recessed before confronting David.

“You took money?”

He did not deny it.

“Yes.”

Elena stared at him.

“You never told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“Stop using shame as an excuse,” I said.

He flinched.

“You signed away your rights and received two hundred thousand dollars.”

“Vanessa called it a settlement.”

“You sold me.”

“No.”

“That is what it looks like.”

“I placed every dollar into an account for you.”

“Where is it?”

“Vanessa found it and sued for control. I lost most of it in legal fees.”

“Most?”

He opened his phone and showed Rachel an account.

Thirty-six thousand dollars remained.

He had added small deposits every month for nineteen years.

“I planned to give it to Ava when she found me,” he said.

My anger did not disappear.

But the truth was more complicated than Vanessa’s version.

“Why accept the settlement?”

“Thomas said it was the only way Vanessa would stop trying to commit Elena permanently.”

Elena shook her head.

“I was already trapped.”

“I believed I was buying you time.”

“You were buying yourself relief,” I said.

David lowered his head.

“Yes.”

That answer stopped me.

He was not asking me to make him innocent.

He was admitting he failed.

“I cannot change it,” he said. “I can only stop hiding it.”

Rachel examined the alleged letter from Elena.

The signature had been copied from a hospital consent form.

The payment record was genuine, but the claim that it involved selling me was false.

The judge allowed the case to proceed.

Outside court, Vanessa’s attorney gave the letter to reporters.

By evening, headlines accused both my biological parents of trying to profit from me.

Marcus wanted to issue a statement.

I refused.

“I don’t want strangers deciding who deserves me.”

That night, someone entered Rachel’s office.

Nothing valuable was taken.

Only the original DNA report and my grandmother’s letters disappeared.

A camera captured the intruder.

Marcus recognized him as an employee of his father’s law firm.

Police arrested the man.

He admitted Thomas ordered him to destroy evidence in exchange for money.

Thomas lost his chance at bail.

Diane requested another meeting with Marcus and me.

She appeared older behind the detention-center glass.

“I know where the original medical files are,” she said.

“Why didn’t you tell police?” Marcus asked.

“I wanted protection.”

“For yourself.”

“Yes.”

Her honesty was ugly but useful.

She explained that Thomas stored copies inside a safe-deposit box under her maiden name.

The records proved Vanessa ordered increasing doses of sedatives for Elena.

They also contained nursing notes from the night Vanessa staged the bathtub incident.

One nurse wrote that Elena had been unconscious for six hours before the baby was found.

Another reported seeing Vanessa carry me into the bathroom.

The nurse had been fired the next day.

Police located her in Arizona.

Her name was Ruth Ellison.

She agreed to testify.

Vanessa finally began to panic.

Her attorneys offered a plea that would avoid a public trial.

The prosecutor asked how I felt.

“I want the truth heard.”

Elena touched my hand.

“You do not owe the public your pain.”

“I know.”

“Then why testify?”

“Because Vanessa taught me silence was loyalty. I need to prove she was wrong.”

The trial began six weeks later.

Ruth testified first.

She described seeing Vanessa carry my sleeping body into the bathroom.

“She placed the child in the empty tub,” Ruth said. “Then she screamed for help.”

“Why didn’t you report it?” the prosecutor asked.

“I did. My supervisor told me Vanessa’s family funded the clinic.”

Thomas’s financial records followed.

Payments to doctors.

Payments to court clerks.

Payments to private investigators who tracked David and Elena.

Diane testified that she witnessed Vanessa copying Elena’s signature.

Marcus sat behind me while his mother admitted everything.

He cried without making a sound.

When it was David’s turn, Vanessa’s attorney focused on the settlement.

“You accepted two hundred thousand dollars to surrender Ava.”

“I accepted money after I surrendered my rights.”

“Is there a difference?”

“Yes. I did not want the money. I wanted Vanessa to stop threatening Elena.”

“But you kept it.”

“I saved it for Ava.”

“You also stopped fighting for your daughter.”

David looked at me.

“Yes.”

The courtroom became silent.

“I failed her,” he continued. “Vanessa committed crimes, but my fear helped those crimes succeed. I will carry that truth for the rest of my life.”

His honesty weakened the attorney’s attack.

Elena testified next.

Vanessa refused to look at her.

“You were jealous of your sister, weren’t you?” the defense attorney asked.

“No.”

“You received the larger inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“You married the man Vanessa loved.”

Elena looked toward David.

“I did not know she loved him.”

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

I turned toward Vanessa.

Her jaw tightened.

The prosecutor asked Elena to explain.

Vanessa had met David first.

She introduced him to Elena at a charity dinner.

David fell in love with Elena.

Vanessa never forgave either of them.

Suddenly, her obsession made terrible sense.

She had not only stolen money.

She had tried to steal her sister’s entire life.

Then I took the witness stand.

Vanessa watched me.

Her attorney approached.

“Mrs. Reynolds raised you, correct?”

“Yes.”

“She fed you, educated you, and cared for you?”

“Yes.”

“Did she ever tell you she loved you?”

“Every day.”

“Then perhaps she truly believed she was protecting you.”

I looked directly at Vanessa.

“Love does not imprison one mother, erase one father, and force a child to repeat lies for food.”

Her smile vanished.

The attorney placed the childhood video on the screen.

“You called Vanessa your mother.”

“She was the only mother I was allowed to know.”

“Do you hate her now?”

I took a breath.

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“I hate what she did. I grieve the mother I believed she was. But hatred would keep me trapped inside her choices.”

For the first time, she looked afraid of me.

May you like

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because she could no longer control my love.
