Chapter 8

The moment Grant mentioned Lily, Adrian demanded answers.
"What plan?"
Grant hesitated.
"She wanted control of the trust."
I looked at Adrian.
His face had gone pale.
"What trust?" I asked.
Adrian answered quietly.
"Elena established one when Lily was born."
It was a substantial fund meant to support Lily's education, future medical needs, and eventual financial independence.
Elena had made Adrian its primary trustee.
But the trust also contained provisions for circumstances in which Adrian became unable to act.
Grant continued.
"Vivian wanted to be named Lily's legal guardian if anything happened to you."
Adrian gripped the phone.
"She was already my wife."
"That wasn't enough."
"What do you mean?"
"She needed authority over the trust. She thought she could get it if you were declared unfit or if Lily was placed in her care under a court order."
My stomach twisted.
Vivian had spent months manufacturing evidence against me.
She had photographed Lily crying.
Recorded staged arguments.
Accused me of neglect.
Now I understood.
I wasn't merely an employee she wanted fired.
I was someone who might contradict her version of events.
Grant's voice trembled.
"She planned to blame you for the injuries. Then she'd argue Adrian ignored repeated warnings."
I looked at Adrian.
He was staring at the floor.
"She wanted to take Lily away from me."
Grant whispered, "Yes."
"And you helped her?"
"I didn't know she'd go that far."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"You knew enough."
Grant began pleading.
He wanted a lawyer.
He wanted protection.
He claimed Vivian had threatened to expose his role in Elena's death if he refused to cooperate.
Adrian said only one thing.
"Turn yourself in."
Then he ended the call.
We immediately contacted Detective Price.
By morning, Grant had surrendered through his attorney.
He began negotiating a cooperation agreement, although prosecutors made it clear that anything he provided would have to be independently verified.
The evidence against Vivian was growing.
Financial records showed that her companies had received millions from the children's foundation through fraudulent contracts.
Dr. Keller's cooperation supported allegations of falsified medical records and efforts to discredit Elena.
The recovered audio files connected Vivian and Grant to discussions about interfering with Elena's car.
And Rosa's backup recording showed Vivian attacking me while Lily tried to escape.
That footage was devastating.
Detective Price showed it to Adrian after obtaining it as evidence.
Adrian later told me he had forced himself to watch.
The camera angle revealed Vivian grabbing Lily by the arm.
Lily pulled away.
Vivian's ring scraped her cheek.
I moved between them.
Vivian seized the golf club.
And I pushed Lily behind me as Vivian raised it.
Then Adrian entered.
The entire scene lasted less than a minute.
But Adrian said he would remember every second for the rest of his life.
The footage also showed something he hadn't noticed.
Before raising the club, Vivian leaned down and whispered into Lily's face.
The microphone picked up her words.
"Your real mother should have taken you with her."
When Adrian told me, I felt physically ill.
Lily had spent years believing she was unwanted.
And Vivian had deliberately fed that fear.
Detective Price assured us that prosecutors were preparing additional charges based on the assault and wider investigation.
But he also warned that a trial could take time.
We couldn't build Lily's recovery around the idea that a guilty verdict would instantly erase the damage.
That afternoon, Dr. Foster asked to meet with Adrian and me.
She explained that Lily needed consistent routines.
Clear rules.
Safe relationships.
And the freedom to express difficult feelings without being punished.
"She may seem better one day and frightened the next," Dr. Foster said.
"That doesn't mean she's going backward."
Adrian listened carefully.
He asked questions.
He wrote down her recommendations.
He arranged to reduce his work schedule.
And for the first time, he began planning his days around Lily instead of expecting Lily to fit into his calendar.
After the appointment, he asked me to join him in the living room.
There was a folder on the table.
I recognized the Cross family stationery.
My heart sank.
I had known this moment would come.
Vivian was gone.
Lily had her father.
Perhaps Adrian no longer needed a nanny who knew too much about his family's worst secrets.
He opened the folder.
"Maya, I owe you an apology."
I remained silent.
"For not seeing what was happening."
I looked at him.
"For doubting you when you were protecting my daughter."
His voice shook.
"And for letting Lily believe she didn't matter."
He pushed the folder toward me.
Inside was a proposed employment agreement.
A higher salary.
Health insurance.
Paid time off.
Educational support if I wanted further training in child development.
And a written guarantee that I would never be dismissed for reporting concerns about Lily's welfare.
I stared at it.
"Adrian, I didn't do this for money."
"I know."
"Then why?"
"Because you deserve respect."
He paused.
"And because I want you to have the freedom to choose whether you stay."
I felt tears rise.
For fourteen months, I had lived with the fear of losing Lily.
Now, for the first time, someone was asking what I wanted.
I looked toward the hallway.
Lily was standing there holding her rabbit.
"Is Maya leaving?"
Adrian stood.
"No, sweetheart. We're talking."
She ran toward me.
"Please don't go."
I knelt and held her.
"I'm not going anywhere today."
She wrapped her arms around my neck.
Then she looked at her father.
"Can Maya be family?"
Adrian's eyes filled.
He crouched beside us.
"Family is more than a name, Lily."
She frowned.
"Then can we love her?"
He smiled through his tears.
"We already do."
I couldn't speak.
That night, after Lily fell asleep, I received a call from Detective Price.
He had news about Elena's final day.
Investigators had reconstructed her movements.
Before the crash, she had stopped at a small church in Brooklyn.
She had left a package with the parish secretary.
The secretary had kept it because nobody ever returned to collect it.
Inside was a sealed letter.
It was addressed to Lily.
May you like
And the words on the front were written in Elena's handwriting.
"To my daughter, when she's old enough to understand how much I loved her."
